The King of Elwynn was the monarch and head of state of the Imperial State of the Imperial Republic of Shireroth known as the Elwynnese Union. The last King of Elwynn was Vilhjalm of Amokolia.
Symbolism
The King is as holder of the White Orchid Throne the Embodiment of the Elwynnese Union and its Sovereignty, Unity and Permanence. He is symbolicallyjoined in sacred marriage with a representation of the White Orchid Goddess, who since ancient times is the Matron and Sacred Queen of the Flower of the North. Their marriage symbolises the unbreakable and indestructible bond between the King and the Elwynnese Union.
Over enthusiastic propagandists of the former regime used to insist that King Noah literally copulated with the nation's patron deity. This was an unspeakable blasphemy which contributed much towards the eventual overthrow of the House of Ettlingar Freyu.
Powers
Ostensibly the King of Elwynn at present remains an absolute monarch with all executive, legislative and judicial power in the Flower of the North vested in Him by the Constitution of the Elwynnese Union. The aforesaid constitutional document also provides the few limits of the King's powers. The King, under that arrangement enjoyed full and absolute Crown Immunity. This however did not avail King Noah as he was summarily marched to the border by the Imperial Marshals.
The King delegated His judicial power to the Royal Courts of Justice, comprised of: the Court of Star Chamber and the Court of Castle Chamber as well as the subordinate Law Courts created by those Courts of Law in the various subdivisions of the union. Since the Constitution of the Elwynnese Union is supreme in authority to any Royal Decree the King can, at present, still exercise judicial authority as a reserve power in the Court of the King's Chamber.
A royal parliament, with limited legislative powers, was also established by Royal Decree during the reign of King Noah.
Under Noah's successor the powers of the monarch remain theoretically as far ranging as they were before. However, owing to the particular circumstances of the Auspicious Occasion, the royal autocracy is now circumscribed by the powers of the Council of Eliria to advise and warn, the growing assertiveness of republican movements abroad in the city of Eliria and the Royal Precincts, and finally the presence of a not inconsiderable Imperial garrison.
His Riverine Majesty's Court
The present King, as of the year 1651, maintains a simple and dignified court more in keeping with the republican traditions of the Principate and the Coordinated State. His principle residence is within the Palace of Krull, where the King receives visitors, holds formal audiences and attends meetings of the Council of Eliria.
History
The Elwynnese Kingship was instituted in 1629 by the decree, issued with the consent of the Council of Eliria, of the then Steward of Elwynn, Hallbjörn Haraldsson, which elevated Elwynn from a Principality to a Kingdom.
King Noah believed that an essential part of proper Kingship is behaving like a King. To that end His Riverine Majesty the King of the Lands of the Two Sacred Rivers, with the assistance of Elwynns Konungurs Hirð and the Fleur de Lys-Longships Guard, maintained a court whose opulence became infamous across the entire continent of Benacia.
The regime boasted that tourists and visitors from near and far flocked to the Court of the Womb of the Lady Esther to view the splendour of His Riverine Majesty's Court and see His many extravagances. This is true, but many of those visitors were shocked and appalled to see so much money spent on promoting one man's own vainglorious self-regard.
