Old Mishalan, sometimes referred to simply as Mishalan, is the eponymous city for which the region known as Mishalan is named. Originally a part of Amokolia, the city was founded around 3184 ASC (April 2008) by an admixture of Bjorngarders and Oleslaaders, which eventually developed into the distinct Mishalanski culture. Occupying the Concordiae Plateau, a highland area where the West Branch of the River Elwynn meets the Main Branch, the original pioneers chose an extremely fertile location, rich with floodplain soils, with access to the river for water and transportation. The relative remoteness of central Benacia, and lack of major settlement west of the river, made Old Mishalan an important outpost. For centuries it served as a frontier city, buffering the rest of Amokolia from barbarians attacking from central Benacia. Thus the city became heavily fortified, and its population continued to grow as more soldiers and their families were stationed there. Essentially in control of the three main source branches of the river, Old Mishalan enjoyed a long period of commerce that made it wealthy and prosperous.
