ShireWiki work

Post by Ari Rahikkala »

Since the ShireWiki bill seems to be passing Landsraad, it's time to organise and clarify the work that goes into transforming the Wiki a bit.

Things that need to be done to the wiki, roughly in order of how many people I expect to be able to do the job without much trouble:

- delinebreakification and reparagraphication: Whatever was done to import the current data in the wiki, it left a lot of article sources linewrapped at 72 characters, and paragraphs broken. It'd take longer for me to write a bot (and the results would be less accurate) that'd go through the wiki and remove those extra linebreaks than it would take for some enterprising Shirithians to go around the list of all pages, clicking on "edit" on each and removing all the extra linebreaks while adding an extra linebreak where there is an extra paragraph break.

I'll use editing A_Treatise_on_Micronational_Existence_on_the_Internet_and_the_Resulting_Implications as an example of this. You might want to have a look at the article proper too, to see how this bug manifests. Now, just removing extraneous linebreaks is easy - just go to the end of each line, press del, and press space. Identifying paragraphs is a little bit more difficult, and you might sometimes have to actually analyse the text a bit to see where the paragraph ends. In most cases, however, the last line of a paragraph is a lot shorter in the edit box than the rest. For instance, "impossible to deduce what has lead to their Creation." is the shortest line since the beginning of the text, and it does indeed end the paragraph - place one empty line between it and the beginning of the next paragraph.

Note that in this case I replaced the article by just googling for the its content and finding it in the Grand Archive (bless that place for, well, existing!). No sense in doing any more work than you have to :p

- content reduction: If a page is not about Shirithian affairs, go to http://mnn.mncentre.net/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page and see if the same content exists over there. If not, copy it over (doing delinebreakification and such as necessary). If you don't have administrative privileges on the wiki, just replace the page's content with . If it's a lengthy page and there's a lot of cross-checking to do, you might also want to mark it by adding template: Moving_Out on top of it before you start working. Use the "what links here" link to clean up references to pages removed from ShireWiki this way. If you aren't sure a page should be included in ShireWiki or not... hm... technically making decisions on things like that should fall to the MiniInfo. I'll start a thread on that in the MiniInfo forum.
- for articles that are partially about Shireroth, try to rewrite them so that the parts that pertain to Shireroth are mentioned, and the rest can be found on MicroWiki (obviously, add a link to MicroWiki for those articles)

- cleanup of historical information: This shouldn't take a lot of research or knowledge. When you come across an article claiming, say, that a specific person currently holds a certain title in Shireroth and zie doesn't, update the article accordingly. If you want to do more than just that, Google and the forum search feature are your friends.

- adding information. You might want to post requests for information on specific subjects in this thread. For instance, I'd really appreciate it if Erik or someone else who remembers what the flag of Shireroth symbolises anyway went to http://www.shireroth.org/wiki/index.php ... al_symbols and added in that information.

- making it look more Shirithian: Currently we're using the default MonoBook style. Since it's going to be the wiki of Shireroth now, it'd be really nice if it looked Shirithian, too. Neike expressed interest in this job.. so, Neike, please report in: What resources do you need to be able to do this?

Shirewiki deletions, for disputes over content reduction and such.

All articles beginning with "N" (excluding redirects, with the exception of 'Gryphon Avocatio' who got redirected to so much that it drove me insane) should now be properly formatted.

Edit - Just FYI, I'm not going to try and assess which pages are Shirerothian and which aren't, of course. So even though the N-pages are now tidied, there's probably a bunch of them which are irrelevant for this project. Someone else will have to check that, though.

Can I have adminpowers for the wiki? I want to make some changes on special pages like the sidebar.

All articles beginning with "E" (again, excluding redirects) should now be properly formatted.

I should say that I'm doing nothing against broken images, broken links, or otherwise, um, broken-ness. The only thing I dare change is if I stumble across a double redirect (something like page A => page B => page C... the wiki software just redirects to page B if you go to page A, which is then just awkward) while I'm working. I'm not actively looking for them, mind.

I'm also doing nothing with articles that don't need depagebreaking and reparagraphing. Not sure if that's going to be weird in the end, since, for example, I've been removing things like...
----
See also: link 1, link 2, link 3
...in favour of the 'wiki-norm'...
See also
* link 1
* link 2
* link 3
Um. Not sure if that's being counterproductive. I didn't realise there were a lot of articles doing it in the first way when I first changed it. Should I stop doing that?

Edit - Gah! Missed an N-redirect that I did. (Isle of Naudia'Diva) Just a head's up.

Neike, it's a wiki. Be bold. Any change can be rolled back, and the ones you've been making have been uniformly for the better anyway :). The only thing I'm concerned about the CSS - while ShireWiki should be edited like Wikipedia, it oughtn't *look* like Wikipedia! In my opinion your time would be better spent working on a mockup or two of what a truly *Shirithian* ShireWiki should look like, rather than janitorial gruntwork! (it doesn't have to be horribly ugly like the forum, as long as it's... you know... Shirithian.)

Hm... you were already in the "bureaucrats" group, although I have no idea what that does... I'll put you in the "Sysops" group, too.

I honestly don't really remember the meaning, just that it was lame.... which has had me considering making some... changes...to the flag..

Hey, I know that. But if people started to make formatting changes on the Crimson Feather wiki, they'd feel my wrath. Hence why I'd rather ask. ;)

I thought I should be waiting for something like FTP access first. :) I mean, I realise I can do that just with the HTML code and CSS that's already there, but I won't be able to upl-... oh, might aswell. Okay, acknowledged, t'was perhaps a bit dumb to be waiting for it. So: I'll get to that at next opportunity. :)

More wiki jobs, for anyone interested:

- write up history on bygone Kaisers and such. Doesn't need to be much, just something like what I just did for http://shireroth.org/wiki/index.php?tit ... _Meskan_II .

- copy imperial decrees from Kaiser's Court over to the wiki, add links to them from the respective Kaisers.

Oh, and who came up with that "please don't write any short articles" BS anyway? I thought something was better than nothing! We've got enough articles to work on that we can work with a few short ones, too...

Scott I think..

Also. many Kaiser don't have a page at all.. let alone a stub with the Line template and that thing on the bottom that says who came before and after.. I was tinkinger with these things today...

Also, the various bloodline articles need their line template added, and need to be updates, along with the templates. and Kaiser links should NOT go to the info on the person who was them... ie.. Bill, Hypatia or Carol...

Thanks! :)

In the weekend I will update some laws and decrees on the wiki.

Yeah, I kept trying to follow usages and formats that were not consistant.

Probably different people trying to fix it differently......giving up...........somebody else starting.......

I went through today and took down 1 article categories of stuff that was in microwiki....

I moved and updated the Guide for the Perplexed. It's a somewhat important document so I'd prefer that people read through it and improve it where necessary (where an improvement could perfectly well range from a typo fix to deleting half of the text and rewriting the other half to be more palatable). Nobles, please correct the lies I told about your fiefdoms :) (and add yourself to the list of people to contact if you like).
