The County of Suthergold is the northernmost of Goldshire's four counties. Before the 5220s, what would later become Suthergold was the then trivial county of Goldendown, a small and neglected land which had never acted as more than bargaining chip. Even Diarsanta (later to be Underwall), the capitol, was barren and unkempt. It was in the year of 5227 ASC that a newcomer, who identified himself as Ryker J. Everstone, applied for Shirerothian citizenship and was dubbed Count of Goldendown but two years later by Duke Ryabin Merkayastreb of Goldshire. Shortly after Everstone was given his title, he ordered detailed surveys of the county to find any resources which might have been overlooked by his superiors. It was during this expedition that major gold deposits and the isolated people of Sutherland, who had split from society for a better way of life, were discovered. Count Everstone offered these once-nomadic people the means to reconnect with Micras, an offer which was accepted on the condition that their lands held the right to self-governance and minimal unannounced government interference (an endeavor of the young Count's since his appointment). As he wished his lands a new beginning, Everstone officially renamed the county as Suthergold, after the hidden treasures of "Old Goldendown". To boost the Suthergoldian economy, Everstone authorized the settling of the gold mining settlement of Cortallia, named for the Sutherlandian mortal-turned-goddess of fate and fortune. After a large system of mining tunnels was established, the artifact which would later be dubbed as the Everstone was uncovered and given to Ryker (who eventually learned to control its ancient magic). Suthergold became one of the most active counties in the state and was slowly earning its place with those more developed. After a prophecy was made by Cortallia through a Sutherlandian shaman telling of the future of Kingsgate, the count turned all of his attention toward creating one of the greatest cities in all of the Imperial Republic. Despite generous donations of laborers and materials made by other states, progress was slow. To solve this problem, the county held the first "Stoneharvest" which is a large expedition through ruined civilizations to scavenge for materials and other resources. During this time, one division of the mission came across an unrecorded civilization of natives, the Rathasians. Some of these people agreed to join the Stoneharvest and accompany them to Suthergold to spread their culture. The foreign presence was, once again, very well received by Count Everstone along with his people. After one generation of Suthergoldians had formed its own identity, the clashing of cultures led to the foundation of Suthra, an entirely new faith which combined and compacted the pantheons of both formerly-isolated populations.

Suthergold is the northernmost County of the Duchy of Goldshire, occupying what was once the northern reaches of Ynnraile. Its people are best known for their outgoing temperament, and an aversion to death in all its forms.

History

The northern lands of Goldshire are shrouded in mystery, being extremely sparsely populated until recent times with even the famed rulers of Ynnraile giving it little attention. Legend has it that the County of Lombardia, established by Duke Erutirn of Goldshire and his paladins, existed in the area some time around 2000 ASC. Aside from that the area has been left to its own devices, allowing for the formation of a distinct civilisation.

The origins of modern Suthergold lie with the Sutherlanders, a nomadic northern Benacian tribe who founded a settlement in Suthergold's northwestern salient. From there, they expanded into the old County of Goldendown, which had existed almost constantly without government since it was established by the New Feudalism of 2285. Over the course of some generations they reached and occupied the abandoned city of Diarsanta, which they renamed Underwall. It was around this time that they encountered the Rathasians, a detached colony of ancient Shirerithians residing in the city of Kingsgate on the White River Elwynn. In the 5200s ASC the leader of the latter people, one Ryker Everstone, invited the Sutherlanders to establish a government with him in exchange for the benefits of state he had attained by the possession of the namesake Everstone, which granted him certain protective powers including immortality. The Sutherlanders accepted, and Suthergold as we know it was born.

In 5258 ASC Suthergold annexed the County of Asantelian to its east, giving it a stretch of Benacia's eastern coastline and Goldshire's entire land border.

Environment & Geography

A map of Suthergold.

Suthergold's climate is on the colder side of temperate, with frequent snows on the higher hill ranges. Between these hills lie sheltered forests and plantations, from which the greater part of Suthergold's economy gets its wealth. Most of the population reside in the west, near the fertile banks of the White River Elwynn and the larger cities.

Government

Suthergold is ruled by a Count, on behalf of the Duke of Goldshire. The Count rules with the assistance of a County Charter, which stipulates the rights and responsibilities of Suthergoldians. Suthergold practices a rigorous ideological liberalism, with certain sections of the population granted special rights. One such group is the Sutherlanders, whose two cities of Sutherland and Underwall enjoy almost total autonomy from the Count. The Suthergoldian state frowns severely on armed conflict, and has outlawed the use of lethal weapons. As a result its County Militia, the Suthergold Defender's League, practices entirely non-lethal methods.

Society

Suthergoldians, besides the doctrine of non-violence pressed into them from birth, have a polytheistic religious streak that is similar but not identical to Cedrism. This practice is called Suthra and is devoted chiefly to the deity Cortallia, the Goddess of Fate and Fortune. Cortallia is accompanied by a series of lesser deities whose natures are far more akin to elemental energy beings than the ascended-mortal Cedrist gods, although strong similarities exist in respective pantheons' subject matter such as knowledge, life and power.

Suthergold's native sport is Dead Ringing - a gladiatorial sport which, despite its name, is as averse to death as any other aspect of Suthergodlian life and punishes death as its worst offence. Between this and the limited choice of weaponry used, participants are famed for the creativity by which they subdue their opponents.
