Balgorod is a small city in northern Mishalan that was founded during the heyday of the Amokolian monarchy as a retreat for wealthy royalty. The city's name itself means "City of Balls", and referred to the great number of formal dances held by the Kings of Amokolia and other royalty. Many decadent halls were built by the powerful monarchs, including King Jean, who spared nothing in lavishing the buildings with ornate trappings. Many of these buildings are still intact, having survived several wars and the Communist revolution; although today they are mostly used for purposes other than dancing. The city was a hotbed of loyalists during the revolution, resulting in nearly three-quarters of the population being lost in the conflict. After the war the city was rebuilt and the Soviet government chose to keep and restore what great halls could be saved, recognizing their architectural and historical importance. Several of the buildings were converted to museums and state offices.
