For some reason, I recall hearing that we were registering a domain such as http://www.shireroth.com, and/or getting a paid account on some webserver. However, this was evidently being taken care of by the Minister of Information, and I myself was never informed of any progress thereof. As it happens, no move to a new site was made, and all our images are still hosted on the free Portland server, of which I have sole administratorship. Therefore, I take it as my business to maintain said site and the effects thereof.THE FOLLOWING REPORT IS THE BUSINESS OF THE MINISTRY OF INFORMATION:Okay... this just sucks. I got the eMail this morning warning me that the site had gone over. Of course they tell me at the beginning of the NEXT MONTH!!! Anyhow, so I decided to take another look at the statistics. I will attatch them to the end of this post.From what I can see, the main bandwidth eaters on the site are the main flag, and the background image. This makes sense, seeing as not only are they the biggest images we use, but also are they viewed on nearly every page on the board. For this, I excuse them. However, there are two other outliers: The Yardistani and Lothlarian flags. Okay... first of all... Scott, you bring up a good point... and I did an experiment on my computer (with separate copies of course) with resizing... and came up with a surprise result...the hypothesis was that resizing the current image rsflag.jpg might lower file size without hurting image resolution very much. However, when I saved the original file to a separate folder as a JPEG from paint, it fucked up the colours and blurred them all... so I instead tried .PNG, which seemed to work fine. I conducted my experiment, and it turned out that the loss of resolution was too large a price to pay for lower filesize ratios... however...The .PNG file is half the size of the .JPG file!Can someone tell me what the hell a .PNG is and why people don't just use them instead of .JPG's or .GIF's?okay, and as for Gman's question... generally when I go to look for the domain price, there is an ad up at the URL you are trying to register. Here it was not the case, neither with http://www.shireroth.com nor with shireroth.comthis can mean one of four things:1) Nobody has even thought of that name, and it is up for grabs, meaning we can just claim it and take it...2) Nobody has even thought of that name, and there is some government agency which will claim intellectual copywright or somesuch and we have to pay a nominal fee of about fifteen to thirty bucks3) Steve has already registered it. Yes and no. In order to run a website (this is true with all sites including free ones) you need a harddrive that is online 24/7. However, that is where web servers come in. There are many a company making profit by selling room on their massive corporate terabyte-sized hard drives, and in the bandwidth of their huge T15 or something web connections. Some such companies are homestead, yahoo, AOL, portland, et cetera.Basically, we have one of two options:1) Host it on someone's computer. This means that they have to be willing to donate at least three megabytes of hard drive space (oh god, oh god), and about 200 megabytes of Bandwidth each month. As well we would be depending on them to have their computer up and running with the server software 24/7. This puts a lot of trust in said person, for they have capabilities to freely fuck with the contents of the site, even to the point of deletion. We would have to keep major archives. But then again, this will always be true. Worst case scenario, someone fucks with the images to put subliminal and/or incriminating messages in them and/or bombs, we stop pointing to the images, and relocate the URL pointer. Maybe someone sees and holds us accountable... oh well whatever.2) Rent webspace. Meaning pay somewhere from ten to fifty bucks a month to have someone else with a legal contract host our site. Because of the legal contract agreement, they are obligated to keep our information and not fuck with it... but then there is always the chance that they could accidentally delete it. But then we could sue them for all they're worth. Worst case scenario, they go out of business and we have to relocate the url's pointer. No biggie.I think you can see which I'm in favour of...also option 1 is a tremendous hassle. Not only do we have to rely on all that of the person, but it is incredibly out of the way to upload stuff to the site then...blah blah blah... I talk too much... you must have misread... there's a startup fee of $10 for the small one and $20 for the one with 50 emails...I will be willing to pay at least the activation fee... probably a month or two more depending on my holidaytime finances...And yes... I'm totally for the $20+$10/mo. one. Those fifty email accounts looks mighty nice... and with 2 ftp servers, we can have one for Kaiser, one for MiniINtFO (Or one for Kaiser and MiniINtFO and one for the general populus).Also, with the unlimited subdomains, we can setup homepages for our duchies, ministries, and even possibly individual citizens. That would be kickass...We might even be able to host the fora there too... or at least the archives...
