Expo '08

Batavië will hold a world fair (Expo '08) and maybe Shireroth could join? We can show our rich history to the others (also other sectors).
We can also show the beatiful map of Shireroth!

Yes, the reason why I ask this is that I'm organisating this world fair and I hope it becomes a success.

Every nation can have it's own pavilion ;)

This needs some love, folks. Any ideas on what the Shirithian pavilion should look like? We're too big to have a consistent architectural style, so I move someone study Hyperborean architecture and get a flash of inspiration. I'm a bit on the busy side so I don't expect to be able to help here...

I think we can have more pavillions in one. In RL France and Paris had their own pavillion, it's possible if we think it's needed.

Yeah, well, that's a fine idea, but how about we start with just having at least one pavilion?

Yes, yes, of course!
I haven't a lot of time either to make a pavillion. :(

It's started guys, and Gralus is already putting us to shame. Shireroth has more culture and things to show off than any other micronation in existence. Let's show that to the world and go and show it off at the World Expo http://batavie.nl/forum/viewforum.php?f=283

We don't want some trumped up magic superpower to show us up, do we?

We don't have to show ourselves off like a dog in a competition. We're Shireroth the great.

Shireroth has been a great empire long enough to see 8 years of pretenders rise and fall. Hundreds of brash and arrogant nations with claims of greatness. Shireroth has witnessed the creations and destructions of each of these insignificant Gastrotrich microbe-nations with an age-earned smirk. Let them boast their greatness while their time lasts. For when their nations turn to dust and their names are forgotten, we will remain Shireroth.

No, the reason why we're not in on the expo is that nobody here has the time, will or imagination to put in the effort to meet the high standard of the works in there so far. No, we don't have to show ourselves off. Gralus didn't have to either, and neither did Batavia. How strange that they ended up there anyway!

That's OK though, really. Remember Erik's star metaphor (maybe it should be called a parable by now?): Some stars burn bright blue and exhaust themselves quickly, some shimmer red for hundreds of billions of years, but they're all stars anyway, and they're all beautiful. I'm happy in a slowly changing, long-lived Shireroth, and it's fine with me that we don't spend much effort on an expo that will be archived and forgotten in a month anyway. I just wish people didn't have such an... attitude about it. We're not special. The reason we're still around is that we're a bit more stubborn than most other nations. If other micronations are gastrotrichs, then we hardly have a claim to call ourselves more than a flatworm, and we're definitely swimming in the same sea.

Of course we're in the same pool, I just felt like a bit of snobbish nationalism since I haven't seen that around here for a number of years. It's good for the spirit in small doses. :rolleyes

Uhh, I'm trying to base this on Hyperborean architecture. Wood would be a rather... unusual choice of material here :p

I decided to check how they look rounded first... I think it could work if it looked less bare. I'll put in some more windows in the walls of the recesses and then fill out the space with statues or big piles of rock or something.

What was done on day 1. I'm worried about the windows in the recesses, but holding out hope that putting something interesting-looking in front of them will make them look less silly.

Scott, feedback from you would be highly appreciated. I read through your architecture post, sketched some really simple shapes on paper, and then basically just started making stuff up in blender without more planning. I can still do major changes to the model (even things like, say, making it rectangular instead of triangular), and that'll change once I start adding detail... I'm especially interested in ideas about what to do with the other two walls - my current plan is to only show the facade to people :(

(and yes, I know, it doesn't exactly look like the kind of thing that you'd build for an expo lasting three months. Once it's ready, if Scott accepts it, I would prefer to describe it as a copy of a building somewhere in Hyperborea.)

*goes to sleep*

That is beautiful. Not really how my current thoughts in the way of Hyperborean architecture have been going, but it's a style all its own, and I quite like it.

I know it doesn't matter now, but my vision of mainstream Shirerithian architecture is kind of like Gothic, but with really garish colors all over.
