"Name That Ship" contest

Post by Yvain Wintersong »

Avakair Shipyards is pleased to announce the creation of the Pridwen-Class Destroyer. The class was commissioned by Baron Wintersong for the Ynnraile navy, and a first production run of five ships is currently under construction. But Avakair Shipyards also hopes to attract other customers from around Shireroth and the world.

In what is viewed as an attempt to garner imperial favor, Baron Wintersong has pledged to donate the first ship completed to the Kaiser for the Imperial Navy. With a sleek steel and aluminium design, a hydrodynamic hull, and an armament dominated by five three-inch guns, Imperial officers are already saying the yet-unnamed ship (pictures from the trial voyage in the calm waters of Avakair Harbor are available below) will be a valuable addition to the Shirerothian fleet.

In order to raise national interest in the new design, I am sponsoring a "Name That Ship" contest. The rules are simple - think of a name for the ship being given to the Kaiser. All entries should be received by this weekend, when I will judge the suggestions and choose a winner.

There are two prizes. The first is that the winning name will appear on the side of the ship when it is formally presented. The second is that the winner will receive his own custom Pridwen-Class Destroyer. By "custom", I mean that I will make you a picture of a ship made to your specifications. You can tell me what flag to fly, what name to use, what color scheme and materials it uses, what sort of scene it's in, and what sort of modifications you want (MINOR modifications only, I don't want to have to make a whole new model) and I will make you a picture of it in a week or so.

If anyone who doesn't win the contest wants a custom destroyer, I'll make it for you for a price. I can't think of what kind of price I could charge, but tell me what you can offer and we can bargain. If someone wants an entirely different model (something other than a destroyer) you can bring it up, but you would need to make a REALLY tempting offer.

The Ducal Army of Kildare wants to buy some ships! :evil
From a distance I'm concerned about the rampant lawyerism manifesting itself in Shireroth currently. A simple Kaiserial slap on the wrist or censure by the community should suffice. - Jacobus Loki

Anyway, I'll enter the contest with the name VNS Devious, after a person in our history who was very nifty (like this ship) :).

I nominate the name of King of H'Graasreign for the ship.

-------

H'Graasreign is a traditional month in Shireroth, and on the first day of this month many villages pick a youth tobecome King of H'Graasreign. The "King" spends the next day chanting DOOM DOOM DOOM all day, all night, until the villagers ritually murder him the following day. I think that this is a great manifestation of Shirerithian culture, the dooms and the booms, and the raw fact of Shirerithian tradition is what we want to reflect in our warships.

Let's go with an oldie but goodie- HINS Erkinpoika's Revenge.
If you don't get it, you can check out http://www.shireroth.org/Stuff/unaimed.doc

What program did you use to make that? I'm trying to learn 3D graphics but I'm having a tough time of it (you can see something I made in the Elwynn archives, but on second thought, better not, it's kind of humiliating).Do you know of any good resources?

Ha! Reading? I know personally one of the dukes. He's a classmate of mine at Drexel. And I've read through the forums, and I'm very much impressed. What's the problem? The fact that it didn't last long?

Let's continue the discussion on Shirlan in this new thread: http://shireroth.kuroshiro.net/forum/vi ... =94&t=7555 ... I'd prefer it doesn't keep polluting this one...

All of you naming ships after naming conventions or historical people or places, please explain them to me if you expect me to understand. Thank you, Ric. Scott, that's LONG. Don't expect me to finish it before this weekend (or probably even to start it before then.)

Scott, I used Bryce 5.5, Photoshop, and a strange program called DOGA that's poorly translated out of Japanese or something but which has some easily accessible ship parts. I'm afraid there's no good way to learn 3D stuff other than lots of practice, and I'm still not very good myself (I messed up the foam, for example, which is why on the first picture I had to do it by hand in Photoshop, which fudged it up.)

Jonas, Maksym, and anyone else who wants to buy ships, please explain to me what exactly you want graphically (a picture of this model taken from a different angle? Certain things added to or changed about this model? A completely different model?) and tell me how you plan to pay me. I don't want to be a spoilsport about the payment, but especially a different model would take at least four or five hours of work to make. I will accept anything micronational or real-world that I consider useful. That could be real-world money, micronational titles or power or secret information, or the exchange of an equal amount of work of something you're good at. I had a bad experience with micronational money in Lovely and unless your micronation's money is worth something I don't really want it.

Very Detrimental to the Health of Trespassers comes from Inevitably Destructive in All Circumstances, which was Frans Erkinpoika's ship in the War of the Wylthean Succession. The naming "convention" was originally inspired by Inevitably Succesful in All Circumstances, the ship of Trade Master Greenish in Star Control 2.

Devious comes from Mattlore Devious, the last Duke of Lothlaria, and the reason we have a kiwi smiley... wait... we don't have a kiwi smiley? *goes to fix that*

Thanks for putting the kiwi back. I think it disappeared about the time of the EZBoard hack.
