Some emotional baggage, and the forum situation

Post by Ari Rahikkala »

Let's start with the emotional baggage.

I watched The Devil's Advocate tonight. I realised that I love it because of ten seconds - where Al Pacino says this:

"Guilt is like a bag of fucking bricks. All you got to do is set it down."

I keep feeling guilty about all kinds of things. I feel guilty for procrastination, I feel guilty for not knowing things I'm expected to know, right now I'm feeling guilty for staying up later than I expected sorting out this post. Just like Shyriath has done at least once, I have felt guilty for not being active in Shireroth... quite a few times. Some other times I have felt guilty for spending too much time on Shireroth...

All you got to do is set it down.

I've finally come to understand this. All I need to do is set the guilt down. Stop believing that having been with this nation for so long makes it my duty to be here. It doesn't. I come here because this place is nifty, and all you people here are nifty - yes, chances are that if you're reading this message, you're someone I consider to be a cool person and who I'd like to spend some time with in a great place like Shireroth.

That I would have to spend years to understand this is perhaps one of my failings as a Shirithian... or Shireroth's failings as a micronation? Without knowing what other people think of it I can't really tell. It intrigues me, though, so I'd really like to know:

Would you stop coming to Shireroth if you didn't enjoy being here?

If your answer is anything but an unhesitating "yes", then I believe we've found something worth changing and improving in this nation; the belief that we owe anything here to anything but each other. We have no duty to Shireroth. The only reason why we might want to try yet another revival project is that having the knowledge we used to have fun here, we hope that if we bring the nation back to high activity we'll have just as much fun again.

Now, one dumb thing that guilt drove me to do is procrastinating finally getting this forum software in order. This forum combines an old version of phpBB with an old version of the Categories Hierarchy mod (and an enormous mod it is), and the last time it was updated was by me during the server move (when we originally moved off ezBoard the forum was placed on the personal server of one of Greg Dean's friends - he needed it to be moved off that server to a real webhost server). I'm sure you've all noticed that it's somewhat glitchy and ugly - I really just didn't have the knowledge and patience it would have taken to make a clean transition.

I'm going to change that soon enough - maybe tomorrow, but no later than next week. I'll be installing phpBB 3.0 RC7, which will have all the useful features we've gotten used to, and a bunch more. I'll try to copy the old posts over and manage a clean migration overall, but I'm not sure if I can do that with all the changes made by CH. At worst we'll just archive this forum and start anew - Erik's given his OK for that, but I'd prefer to avoid it if I can. The results might be ugly at first, but I've spent a year wanting to go back and do it right the first time around - it's going to be a relief to finally fix all of that.

Basically, though, if you are a pessimist by nature you might want to expect the worst, that the forum will "lose" all of its posts, everyone will have to re-register, and that the visual style will be a bit chaotic before I get it ported over properly. Don't worry, though. I promise I'll have fun doing it this time :).

(oh, and in case you're wondering: I gave Erik the password to the shell account this forum's hosted on... and the password to changing the Malarbar, too. Scott might disapprove, I guess, but I have decided not to feel guilty for possibly causing "indignity" to this nation anymore. Besides, isn't it time Erik learned those passwords anyway? :P)

Malarbor Says: So, after a few dead Kaisers, we now have Kaiser Mors V. And apparently a "Great Consolidation" of positions and powers. Silly mortals. Thinking that I didn't plan this all along. For I am Malarbor! I know all! This is as I have foreseen!
It's more impressing when Malarbor says: Malabor demands it! (after saying the text)

It doesn't matter how many posts we "lose" provided the community is still here. :)

And if the forum will get yet further niftiness, then this plan sounds good.

Ari, your words are words of wisdom. I see this a lot in micronations, though - people feel some strange obligation to come in and post and be merry, which then, of course, doesn't work, as the heart stops being involved. In that, micronations are pretty different from real nations... latter don't require the citizens to be active to keep the 'title' (or perceived title, whichever it may be). ^_~

I can't wait to see a fresh install of phpBB! If I can help you in any way, let me know - but then, I doubt you'll need it, your programming skills no doubt surpass mine anyway, and I doubt my experience with phpBB is going to help with this particularly mind-boggling job.

I see and watch the rejuvenation of Shireroth with a childish wonder. Much good has happened in the past few days... but this? I am a particular fan of honesty, and believe so much good can come from it. This moves me.

That, and I can relate.

Honesty is fun.

Thank you so much Ari for putting the energy into doing these things, especially since as far as I know.. no one asked you... You are indeed Nifty beyond compare...

This is where I've gotten so far, after a few hacks to keep the conversion script from crashing constantly. I'm going to go to sleep now, tomorrow I'll figure out how to get the parts that I believe should be "easy" to work out - for instance, stop HTML from being escaped where it shouldn't be escaped (at least the forum descriptions and all posts from ezBoard are broken). I'll also work on a rudimentary Shirithianish visual style... once I'm happy with it, I'm going to freeze this forum and run the whole conversion process again (I expect maybe about an hour of downtime). Until then, continue posting here on this forum as if nothing had happened.

Things that I'm only going to do after the move:

- bringing about the return of Malarbor
- actually making a proper Shirithian visual style (does anyone remember what icon we used to the left of "Forum Index" on the breadcrumb path? I'm fairly certain that the tent I left in there the last time I was working on the forum doesn't belong there :p)
- putting the proper subfora in their places (the conversion script I used is meant for vanilla phpBB, it's not aware of subfora)

If you see any issues with that forum that I haven't mentioned yet, or have issues with this plan, do tell.

Just put a message on Malarbor when you plan to do the down time. Just so we have a rough idea of what's going on. then again, I'll just assume what's going on..hehe

As you can see in the Malarbar, I've been working on the forum. As you can see if you click on the test forum link, I'm also changing the layout (making it up as I go), so... I suggest you use this chance to tell me what you think of what I've changed so far :).

(I do intend to bring back the features that I've removed. I'm just considering where to place the site, wiki and FAQ links so that they accentuate the banner without taking up vertical space... Oh, and the links to Viw from Benacia and ShireFox? Those probably won't return.)

Just makesure you have subforums, not as many boards as you currently have.

Sure. The converter is not aware of subforums (since they are a mod feature, not a feature in vanilla phpBB2), it just flattens all subforums into a long list in a dummy category. It's going to be less work to just put them back in their proper categories by hand than it would be to hack the converter to understand subforums.

Yes indeedy! Everything's looking better than new. Well... a new forum usually looks quite bare, so this is better than it was before. :)
