Petition: County of Skingrad
Most honorable Kaiser:
I would be very much in your debt (indeed, I already am for being let into this wonderful nation) if you would be disposed to grant me a county to be named Skingrad. I care not where on the map it is placed - any small unused plot will do.
Many Thanks,
Janus Hassildor, Hopefully-Count of Skingrad

Right, so that makes you ineligable for pretty much anything in Kildare and Mar Sara.
Besides, it's one thing to have a territory to have a theme similar to a video game. I know that I've done it myself. It's another thing altogether to rename a county to become unoriginal. I know that Goldshire, Elwynn and the like are unoriginal, but the only reason why they havn't been renamed is because they have been like that for six years. Please do not rename a county like this.
In fact, personally I am against renaming counties altogether.

Well, if it's a county someone was granted six years ago, and they never did anything with it culturally, then I wouldn't see the problem with renaming it.

I'm not against renaming counties. Most of them have never had their names used, were named randomly a while back by coming up with stuff that didn't sound too awful, and have sat around doing nothing ever since. We all had our chance to get names the way we want them and there's no reason someone else shouldn't either.

Yeah, I know, I'm stupid. I feel ashamed for even saying that, because I don't want to alienate him, although I probably will, but it's how I feel.
But you know me - I want to keep Kildare (APOLLONIA ARRGH) and work on its culture. That's by far more important that the rhetoric I was spouting about originality - the preservation of the Apollonian lands is very important to me.
Why Skingrad, though? I liked Chorrol better.

give him one of the inland shires on the main continent, i always get goldshire and brookshire and brookkeepshire or whatever thier named... confused.
but i also agree that NOT renaming counties is cool and that aknowledging the lands previous history in your development is not only awesome and respectful, it shows a creativity in its challenge and execution.
(see Lunaris, Old Hallucination, well, the whole nation exept Alexandretta. that was the only County that really fit his description, and well, theres already a count working on it.)

I'm pretty sure I've made it clear that I fully intend to rip off Oblivion. But thank you for the clarification anyway.Sir Ophiuchus wrote:*cough*Oblivionripoff*cough*
Anywho, Am I correct in assuming the problem here is that all the land in Shireroth is split up already and not a single island, hill, or valley is unoccupied? Can there really be that many counts?
It seems to me that what Scott said means that there's at least a few counties out there that have seen NO development and would lose nothing in a name change except their name. Which I'm sure can be assigned elsewhere.
If I kept the name of a county and developed it (if I'm going to develop this at all - I will admit that I'm here to see what this hobby is like and if it's fun more than create a complicated history of a county), it would be just as bad as changing the name, because I'd be corrupting what could be another county by working under the name.

Let me tell you something, straight fom the horse's mouth. Before you begin to do anything with a county--let alone change its name--you should at least try to contact the first person or people to have it, regardless of how old it is. Intellectual property rights, you know. And there are plenty of onoccupied counties, it's just that...some person may mind it if you decide to take their dear old county that they had four years ago and take it in a different direction--say, if you took what was originally a land of beautiful apple-tree forests and turned it into an industrial wasteland. So, there's plenty of hope, if we can find an unoccupied land that nobody cares about, and with which you may meddle until your heart's content.

Actually there is tons of free land. I would estimate that perhaps half of our 50-odd counties are occupied (though that might be a bit generous, I haven't counted). The problem is that so much of it has been occupied by someone at some point, with their own culture that they developed, that there aren't any true blank slates. The others are reminding one another that that legacy should, in most cases, be respected, and the name is somewhat related to that.
In order to narrow things down a bit, was there some sort of particular climate you had in mind, the kind of terrain that would be appropriate? (We certainly have enough to choose from.) Do you hope to have a fully clean slate, or would you work with (some of) what was already there, just continuing the story in a different way? I think an excellent example of this is the Barony of Vorpmadal, though I don't check other subdivisions most of the time (and Vorpmadal used to be under Kildare). What sort of place do you want to develop?

Yes, there are places which have names that are ripped off from games and films and stuff. But we let them get away with it becase the names were put there years ago. No longer will any places be named like that. Any new names must be original.
That was what was meant when people talked of old places.
There are many empty counties, all of which have been lived in before.

I'd really rather have a blank slate. I hate picking up anything where someone else left off, and I'm pretty sure I'd hate having to stay true to what they wanted instead of doing what I wanted.
When I say free land, I mean land that has no county on it with any historical background so I can do what I want with my county. As it stands, things seem too full for me here.

Janus,
Welcome to Shireroth
When it comes to choosing a county with a clean slate it is quite difficult but some of the counties in Benacia (western continent) would be better then if you want a clean slate. They're less "cultured", I'd dare say. A place like Ran or Elsenar would be better. After a while when you've done your cultural conquering of those lands you could rename them, or keep the original names.

yeah man... just poke around for a county you like...
wait a second. doesnt the kaiser assign counties unless he feels like granting a request?
anyway, just check out the big ol map in the ministry of cartography (its okay, bill doesnt bite unless you mispronounce appallonia or his last name [shit, i think i just did]) choose a red county you like (those are the ones noone has right now) and go from there.
the elders will tell you how much development has been made there, who owned it, what its geography was like, all that good stuff, there may even be an archive for it (scroll ALL the way down to the bottom of the forums) which will help you in establishing the counties past, AND THEN!
if the counties still have too much history and all that, you do a more drastic version of what i did...... you create a huge story about why the county changed so much (hell mine spanned 2 counties before i became a Baron i think) and thanks Hypatia for the comment.
so there you go bro. Im almost positive theres no counties or stretches of land with clean slates within our current borders, HOWEVER,
i am positive you van find some land here that you can take and make your own,,, AND THEN>>>>
if your really hard up for starting bvlank and making your own way... go to the MCS and maybe ask ryan and bill to give you a space someowhere on the map to either be a country on your own or..... perhaps even a Shirerothian Colony? MUAHAHAHAHA!
so yeah, thats my ten cents

Again, what type of culture do you want to have? We can probably help you find something that is, at least thematically, in line with what you want to do. Even if you completely ignore its history, I think it would be more appropriate for you to have a county that is similar to what you want to develop.
For example, I would be (mostly) fine with someone way down the line changing the culture of Old Hallucination to something else that has to do with lunacy or craziness, and creativity, even if he/she completely ignored what had happened before. We've already had some pretty major upheavals and changes in leadership, but for the most part the underlying idea of the place stayed the same.
If you can find a county that is thematically similar, that would be the best choice for you to take.

It really won't be as much an issue as you seem to think, Janus. Just a matter of either finding a county that's fairly clean-slate, or else one that's cultured but which no one will mind you changing.

Shut up. Mar Sara (I rather call it Marsara myself, really) is all that is left of Tapferite territory. I feel very strongly about this, but there's nothing I can do with it since I currently can only have one county.Ryan wrote:Give the man some land dammit!
Give him Mar Sara. The name was ripped off from Starcraft anyway. And ignore anything Bill has to say about it. :P
Ain't going to be allowed in Apollonian territory.if the counties still have too much history and all that, you do a more drastic version of what i did...... you create a huge story about why the county changed so much (hell mine spanned 2 counties before i became a Baron i think) and thanks Hypatia for the comment.

Well, and I'm refraining from going to the map myself because I have no clue the cultural status of ANY of the numerous counties, anything that's famous for it's wine and/or historically medival would fit the bill for what I want to do.
