how do you pronounce "Shire"?

Post by Conglacio »

when talking about the county I live in, "Derbyshire" I pronounces the shire bit as "sha" therefore, "Darbeesha"

what talking about Brookshire or Goldshire, I pronounce is "sheer" or "she-ya" therefore, "Gol'sheya"

but for Shireroth, I pronounce it "shy-ya" therefore, "Shyaroth"

There's no "r" sound in any of these...

English accents are non-rhotic so they typically don't pronounce r's at the end of words. I guess he forgot that not everyone is English though. :)

I pronounce it as shy-r or maybe shy-er* in Shireroth and sher* in Brookshire.

Why can't you people use IPA or SAMPA?

I say [SaIr] personally, but I'm, of course, American.

I would expect [Sir] from a lot of British people, but that would depend heavily on where your from.

On its own, I pronounce Shire as "shy-ah", but in names like Wiltshire and Hampshire I say "shuh".

If I was American instead of English the pronunciations would be "shy-err" and "shurr" respectively...

If we can't agree, then let's make a committee! :D

And fine, I shall use English IPA for American English pronunciation ;)

In Shireroth

In Brookshire

Erik's way is the only way it should be pronounced [shy'r], even if as a suffix it tends to vary towards 'sheer' in general usage.

But it's 'hire' with an 's', so if you can pronounce 'hire' correctly, then you can just as easily pronounce 'shire' correctly. :document

while on an official and national level, it should be pronounced however Erik says, like I say, regional accents would have it different....

I protest, Steven. That's New York City, not Long Island. I still pronounce "r"s perfectly. :p

But you Long Islanders still fubar the language. Speak proper New England American!

And I pronounce it the same way they do in Lord of the Rings.

Which, coincidentally, is the same way as Erik does - shy'r.

Now ain't that scary! :p

Uh, "New England" American is used as FUBARed, if not even moreso. If you are talking about a generic American accent, go to the Midwest. :p

As well, I don't even have much of a Long Island accent.

Well, that's me imitating quasi-British-soundingness :)

Btw, this forum is suddenly doing bizarre things to my window.
