Newbie-friendliness
At Fax's suggestion, I have gotten the Guide on the site reasonably up to date in preparation for a potential influx of visitors from his ad campaign.Tomorrow I'll be trying to change the "Confused?" link atop the forums to something that is more conspicuous without being annoying to regulars. Hopefully it shouldn't matter much since the ad will direct to the site anyway, but couldn't hurt. What else is needed to make it easier and more enticing for newbies and visitors to get into the swing of things? Fax, I know you said you had a lot of ideas, and I'm willing to help you carry some of them out if you can describe them to me.

I'd like to find someone who knows Flash to create a Flash tour of Shireroth, but failing that, I'm working on a simple HTML one, complete with pictures.A stickied thread in General with a few notable links and pointers in them would help too. Things like "Fill out your citizenship application. Here's where it is." and the like. Blindness Is A Blessing

Hey Fax.I just realized our immigration form got wiped out in the plague. Can you either make a new one or permit me to do so (which I will do gladly)?I'm thinking maybe go for something much more minimalist than Harvey's old version - something more like the census where it's very quick and easy and everything's bolded on separate lines.

Re: Newbie-friendliness
When I immigrated, there was a form on the website that you filled in for immigration (seriously). That may be an idea as well.A bit of the problem that we have is that our system doesn't really give new immigrants much to do when they join up. Most people in micronations aren't content with just being citizens; they want inflated titles to go with their citizenships. If we get even a few citizens, Shireroth is not going to have anything to provide them to do. There are no jobs for these people to be active in. Almost all of the Jobs here are filled, and the few that may not be need some amount of knowledge to be fulfilled..But I don't know how to remedy that. It's not as though there are a lot of useful or worthwhile jobs we could make up. But there is definitely a problem in there somewhere, and I doubt that there isn't a viable solution. 3e knowe ek that in fourme of speche is chaunge / With-inne a thousand 3eer, and wordes tho / That hadden pris now wonder nyce and straunge / Us thenketh hem, and 3et thei spake hem so, / And spedde as wel in loue as men now do...

We do have an entire pantheon that needs clarifying.I'd also be willing to make a Barony or two, or perhaps even give up a job (or two).We should check with all citizens about cutting back to one or two jobs, in the event of a rapid influx of citizens. Blindness Is A Blessing

The problem is most of the jobs we're doing right now aren't stuff I would trust newbies with. Only people with a lot of diplomatic experience and knowledge can be MiniEx, for example, people need historical knowledge to edit the Wiki, and so on. There are really very few jobs that a new person can do, and even those would require them being smarter and more reliable than average.I am hoping more that we can get newbies involved in stuff we've never even considered. Antica's doing a model rocketry program - there's one newbie out of the way if we can find someone good at that sort of thing. Someone needs to make Shireroth radio broadcasts, et cetera. SNARL and the economy should be helpful, if the former lasts and the latter starts.I'm gonna make a list at some point.

True enough, but you have to remember that people can't get experience without actually doing. Blindness Is A Blessing
