Hah. Slow? I'll tell you about slow. Well, not really slow, but big. My computer is decent. It could use a lot more memory than the current 256 megabytes, but in general, it will stay usable even if I throw some rather heavy jobs at it. And it can compute stuff well enough.Last night I decided that I wanted to try out the latest Ximianised OpenOffice release candidate, just to see if it would look any good (vanilla OpenOffice makes you want to gouge your eyes out with a rusty spoon). I had to install GNOME first. Well, no problem. The compilation took... three hours or so, I think. Not very long anyway for a rather full-blown desktop environment. Then I tried to compile OpenOffice. It gave me an out-of-memory error. Out of memory? Don't I have a friggin' two hundred megabyte swap partition, how much do you need? (*) Well, I decided that I did still want to compile it, so I created a gigabyte swap file and come bedtime, started the compile again. Now, OpenOffice is an office suite. As you should know, office suites are big. But IMO they are not supposed to be as big as complete desktop environments. Not in my world.OpenOffice's world is different. I slept for seven hours, woke up, and listened... heavy hard disk activity. Still. The compilation process went on. Seven hours. Something that takes a computer seven hours is a huge quantity of work. It didn't actually take much longer - in fact, the installation was finished a couple of minutes after I woke up. Perhaps I'm oversensitive to long compile times (OpenOffice is known to have taken days to compile on slower machines), but... seven hours. Would you like installing an office suite to take seven hours? Granted, the process was completely automated from the beginning to the end and I did get the suit optimised for my computer... that's the point of compiling, after all. But I really hope that either gcc will speed up in the future or that OpenOffice will be made lighter (fortunately, I know that with stuff like precompiled headers, the former is going to happen in perhaps half a year or so).(*) Well, to tell the truth, two hundred megabytes is not that much for scientific computing or very heavy workloads, but I don't do that sort of stuff. Mitä minä todella sanoin
