A Cry for Aid (from Ari, Erik, or whoever)

Post by Irreverence Brightstar »

So I just purchased "UNIX for Dummies" and "Apache Servers for Dummies". As you can guess, I'm trying to build a web-server. ANYBODY KNOW HOW WHO CAN TEACH ME?Thanks bunches.Let the instruction begin. Irreverence BrightstarThe Dragon of KildareI BELIEVE IN SWEETCHEEKS! (honk if you get the reference)

Unfortunately, that must wait until I return to my T1 connection... I am NOT downloading Unix over a 56k... Eros Darkstar al Blackbane ij Qel'Athas(Or as the Mircons would say, Ros'Mol Dar'Lor)Solomirathius of DelvenusA Proud Citizen of Shireroth

I DLed Linux 8 over a 56k....First DL this....downloads-zdnet.com.com/3...ml?tag=dirThan... You need these ISO files, just imput them to DL manually, ADD URL button.ftp://ftp.dc.aleron.net/pub/linux/redha ... sc3.isoYou can also DL 4 and 5... but it says you don't need those, and I don't know what they are...You'll also need to make a install disk, here is the disk image you need:ftp://ftp.dc.aleron.net/pub/linux/redha ... mlQuote:If you need to use a boot diskette, use either rawrite on DOS-based systems or dd on Linux systems to write the boot diskette image file to a 3.5 diskette. See the Red Hat Linux 8.0 Installation Guide for instructions on how to use the rawrite or dd programs.Read that and poke around for any info you need. E. I'd just wait for T1...why do something like that over a 56k if you won't have to do it later...? Erik, the next time you refer to an inexistent thing like "Linux 8" I will flame you much, much worse than now. Red Hat is not the only Linux distro out there, you know. I don't use Linux 1.4_rc1, do I :p (what I use is Gentoo 1.4_rc1)? If we were splitting hairs, "Linux" would refer only to the kernel, which would mean that I'm running Linux 2.4.20-ck2. That wouldn't tell much to a newbie, however :). ErosDarkstar:If all you need is a webserver, I'd recommend using a less general-purpose distro - in fact, I'm not sure if I would use Linux at all. OpenBSD ( http://www.openbsd.org ) is a nice and extremely secure UNIX to put especially on low-end boxes, while FreeBSD ( http://www.freebsd.org ) is quite secure, and designed for servers with high loads. I've never installed either of them, but looking at the install instructions, at least FreeBSD shouldn't be too hard to deal with. On the Linux side... well, RedHat is good enough if all you want is a webserver and you're ready to spend a lot of time keeping it up to date and managing dependency hell. I'd recommend a .deb-based distro (like Libranet) for easier upgrades and administration, though. As for who can teach you... the common ethic in the UNIX world is that you will have to teach yourself. However, if you just ask the right questions*, more experienced people will gladly answer them.* questions that, when answered, can teach and help more people than just you Tolkien's themes of loss always seemed a little weird to me - everyone was always lamenting for the mighty heroes of old, and marvelling at the power of lost crafts and magics. I mean, did the Elves make Glamdring and Sting and Orcrist and then FORGET what they just did? If things worked like our world, the very next year some smart-assed Elf would hammer out Super-Glamdring, then Hyper-Glamdring, then Ultra-Glamdring, and continue to improve until Frodo's day when the Elves would be producing toothpicks that would cause every Orc in the land to explode if waved even slightly.-- shut_up_man, on Slashdot

Quote:Because whenever anyone makes a post about anything that contains the words UNIX, there's a long thread of help that follows :)That's because this is not a support forum. On, say, Gentoo's forums ( forums.gentoo.org ) it's common that you only get a few answers to a question, but these answers usually contain the information you needed. On a micronational forum all you get is a lot of opinions.Quote: Or because we all use microsoft products but pretend like we don't?Hm. I'm not a Shirithian citizen anymore, so I guess this doesn't apply to me :). You'd get flamed if I were.Quote: HE has a point.. and whenever Microslut is mentioned... alot of curses follow... THOSE FUCKING GITS!Heh... I think that I'm one of the most MS-neutral people on this forum... I really don't have the time to give to linux...Microsoft has the advantage that ANY idiot can put their software on the computer, hit the F1 key and find out how to do things...linux starts up...and you have to type in a bunch of 2-letter commands to do things...unless you have X...but even then, X is a headache if things get out of control...you actually have to know computers to use linux...and even if you know computers, you have to know somebody that can use linux to use it yourself.. It becomes MUCH easier to use linux if you know somebody else using it...they build off each other's experience....think about us...my computer did a whole bunch of nothing...then we put our heads together...now the nothing it does is a whole lot cooler...
