The Kaiser is victorious!

Post by Kaiser Letifer I »

Against an evil windows virus.. I've spent the last hour manually battling a virus on my comp...hehe.. In the end.. *I* Corrupted it! instead of it corrupting me!...well... my comp... But this is only the battle.. the war continues.. I must find the source of the problem.. the accual virus is still lurking.... I haven't been able to track it.... but I took down one of it's tools... A nasty bugger...The virus makes a program called "win***" (Where *=some random letter or number) in your system folder.. this file set itself to run at start up. And you cannot kill it was ALT CTL DEL.... It hides.. and windows has no KILL command like Linux.... nor does it have a good task manager that would let me kill it... bah.. this file is evil.. every time you edit the start up services to remove it.. it puts itself back as soon as you close the window for the control... so.... as long as it was running.. I couldn't remove it... and because I coulnd't remove it.. it was always running.. and it was in use by windows... so windows wouldn't let me delete the file... which tried to hide itself and pass itself off as a read-only, hidden archive, system file.... Very evil.. and... it would make ANOTHER program.. that it put in your Program Files dirrectory... that was all random letters and only ate up ram... and once you killed it with ALT CTL DEL, it deleted itself.... tricky... but I found it... And the WIN*** one also tries to access the net.. Lovely ZoneAlarm blocks it.... thank you Lukedu for telling me bout that firewall..So... in the end... I went to DOS... and tried the DEL command... on it.... said it didn't exsist.. than I recalled the EDIT command... but it was read only... so I went back to windows... turned off all the hidden, read only and archive junk... Edit could open it now.. so.. I went in... and since it was a binary... I couldn't read much.. but there was some text.... which disturbed me... it was as evil as I thought... starting services and such.... But I started deleting characters since it was all jarbled.... and adding random letters... and generally corrupting the file... Hehe.. when I started windows it yelled about a DLL being missing.. it was like.. windleafsdgafsthjretava32.dll is missing... my handy work.. thank you very much! The program was dead!.. so I got to reset all my startup stuff and remove it.. and now.. I have won!..It was so evil.. I set windows to do a "diagnostic startup".. meaning.. I picked and chose what I wanted to run as the system booted... it edited that too... added itself back to the startup thing and enabled that....good ol' MS-Dos mode.....It's my fault I have the virus.. but I knew what I was doing when I opened the file..... if you get a blank Email with 2 attachments from ANYONE! don't open the attachments.. one is an image taken at random from... somewhere.. maybe the person's cache. Since I got sent Micronational stuff.. like forum pages and such... It came from Earl Washburn, after being bounced around a few proxies.... So.. beware him. He denies it.... but I don't trust him... * ari laughs nonchalantly *Klez takes a random address from the Outlook Express address book on the computer it's on and forges the FROM: address of the emails it sends as that. The chance that Washburn actually has the virus is minimal - he only needs to be in the address book of whoever actually was infected to be able to seem like the source of the virus. You could even get a Klez attachment that seemed like it came from me, although for obvious reasons that's impossible.Anyway, as far as I am concerned, Outlook/Outlook Express is simply too insecure to be used for anything that involves transactions with the Internet - such as reading e-mail. You can make it comparatively secure (i.e. compared to older, unhardened versions of itself) by patching it to the latest version and disabling everything that's more active than simple HTML (especially ActiveX and VB scripts). But if I were on a machine where my choices were using Outlook Express and manually reading the mail spool with 'more' on a dumb terminal, I'd choose the latter. The security record of the former is so bad that I wouldn't have any way of knowing what sorts of crap it leaves lying around... Tolkien's themes of loss always seemed a little weird to me - everyone was always lamenting for the mighty heroes of old, and marvelling at the power of lost crafts and magics. I mean, did the Elves make Glamdring and Sting and Orcrist and then FORGET what they just did? If things worked like our world, the very next year some smart-assed Elf would hammer out Super-Glamdring, then Hyper-Glamdring, then Ultra-Glamdring, and continue to improve until Frodo's day when the Elves would be producing toothpicks that would cause every Orc in the land to explode if waved even slightly.-- shut_up_man, on SlashdotEdited by: Ari Rahikkala at: 12/21/02 12:39:31 am

This worm is really annoying... i been getting dozens of them, but strangely enough i cant see the attachments.. the mails are 130k each though. I had one of these worms once cuz my sis opened an attachment... they're not fun...I think there maybe only one or two of us that has/have it... everyone should check his/her PC. The attachments don't appear in hotmail, just a blank email taking up 120-odd kb

I got it. I'm not sure if it was responsible for my computer crashing a lot and then my modem crapping out for no reason. I fixed both problems, though. I got a blank e-mail from Scott N. One from Tom Cutterham, too. Locke
