Actually, Ireland was originally known as Scotia, and Irish monks had Scotus, meaning "from Ireland" as a Latin cognomen. For some reason someone confused Ireland and Scotland in the Middle Ages at some point and one of them invaded the other in a way I can't remember too well and the term Scotland became applied to Scotland, which was formerly just plain Caledonia.Eoin can correct me if I'm wrong here.
