It's just that Cthulhu hasn't yet decided whether to run or not in 2008.

British, Irish, Scottish, Welsh; it makes little difference. They each get pissed when you mistake them for a guy who lives on the same island. My bad. There are no flowers, no not this time. There will be no angels gracing the lines, just these stark words I find.

Moose, you do know that the average English person (and I presume you're referring to the English, as we Irish don't need to have snooty accents to sound any better than anyone else) sounds less like the Royal Family and more like the Royle Family, don't you? I don't know why you should hate being an American. Any ass who assumes that you're stupid because of your nationality is too ignorant to care about. Certainly, you can be an American and be educated. Am I my president? Fuck no. But I was born in the USA and don't have any overbearing reason to try and say differently. I don't like the way the country is going, in particulary toward scientific progress. Europe may have its technophobes, but at least the majority of the hampering isn't based on faith - it is just based on ignorance. You're assuming that being a technophobe is a bad thing, and that the key to some magical utopian future is through science, when it's not. Yes Bill, i'm probably the type of person in america you hate, so unleash your full fury on me, baby. There are no flowers, no not this time. Re: For you pesky Americans
I didn't say magical utopian future. I'm a bit less moral than that - I simply believe in the utter and complete nonobstruction of science. I believe (with no real merit, probably) that ethics has no place in science, for it will eventually just get in the way of what we can learn about the universe. The universe is not human, after all, and we should not be hampered by our own disadvantages. Re: For you pesky Americans
From the linguistic standpoint, Americans have numerous accents, most of them are concentrated in the northeast. I can tell or less which of the major cities someone is from (or lives around) by the way they talk. Philadelphians and South Jerseyans have a particular way of extending their long o's. For example, when they say "home" it sounds almost like "hoom". New Yorkers and North Jerseyans have related accents, although the North Jerseyan is less severe than the New Yorker. Both will leave out the last "g" in "-ing" words making it "-in" and still pronounce words like "caught" and "cot" differently (and rhyme words like "talk" and "stalk" with "caught")North Jerseyans still say "th" rather than d though and don't drop final r's like New Yorkers do (the "th" to "d" thing is getting rarer even in New York accents though). Some North Jerseyan accents will also turn the short a into two separate sounds, a schwa quickly followed by an a, but not as strongly as New Yorkers can tend to.Most importantly, North Jerseyans do not have the "Brooklynese" tendency of turning an r into "oi" (the classic example of this uber-stigmatized feature is people from Brooklyn who say "goilz" instead of "girls" - Type O Negative even made a song joking about it). This is also where the stereotyped pronounciation of "Joizey" comes from. The feature is actually describing New Yorkers saying "New Jersey" and has never been a feature of any New Jersey accent.Weird thing is that I hear people from New Orleans speak with an accent very similar to North Jersey/New York. Possibly due to the influence of similar groups of immigrants. Boston and surrounding areas also have their own distinct accent/s, which are pretty well known to all, by this point. The rest of the accents, and there are a bunch aside from Southern and Midwestern, like Midlands, Inland (which covers much of New York state and the Great Lakes states), and Californian, but these tend to cover much larger areas (Midwestern is, afterall, the standard for General American English, and California has a lot of influence because of its exposure in the media...though someone should really teach those people how to say "caught" ). Their are a number of accents which are fairly unique to certainp places (like Pittsburghese), they still basically belong to other accent groups, while the big three northeastern regional accents are quite distinctive of each other. Did I do a good enough job of rehijacking this thread? SF-SNEdited by: Stjepan Veliki at: 9/12/05 22:07
