19/08/05Before returning home from Hungary, I brought with me a bottle of wine called Bikaver with an interesting history. The name of the wine literally means "Bull's Blood" and it got that name during the many wars between the Ottomans and the Kingdom of Hungary. During the siege of Eger, the commander of the outnumbered Hungarian garrison fortified the valour of his men by having them drink liberally from the local red wine stock. This seems to have worked as the Turks were unable to seize the city. The story goes that the Turks, upon seeing the beards of the defenders stained red with the wine, believed that the Hungarians were drinking the blood of bulls to give them superhuman strength and courage in battle. By "wrong way round", I mean it would do better to read:"Freedom to Fascism, Death to the People" Unicum is one of those drinks, like Jaegermeister, that started out as a medicine and got abused enough to be put on the open market as booze (the lack of many medical qualities helped that factor too). The name comes from a royal who, upon drinking it as medicine (created by Dr. Josef Zwack), declared "Das ist Ein Unicum!" (that is a curiosity). It is a 40% vol. herb liquor, which "tastes so bad, you know it must be doing you good" (I rather enjoyed it). A shot of the stuff is almost impossible to down (and it's rather fun to see some of my more stupid drinking friends try to knock back the stuff - it teaches them a lesson), and should be drunk slowly.Whilst drinking too much can be seen as bad for you, it is also seen as the national hangover cure (Hungarians are ferocious drinkers). *shrugs* I considered that that was what you meant, but after going it over in my head a few times it just doesn't make sense.I don't think Hungarians drank particularly more than Croatians, although Croatians like to drink too - although I'm still big on what my alcohol tastes like. And fortunately for me, I don't get hangovers. SF-SN

Drink 5 shots of Unicum in quick succession during a night of heavy drinking (actually, drinking 5 shots of unicum in quick succession IS a night of heavy drinking) and you are almost guaranteed a hangover. 21/08/05There is one critical reason why American college parties suck ass. (Yes, I just came back from one...) They buy cheap ass shitty beer that tastes like bubbly piss water. The Campaign for Real Ale should move to the US.I happen to like Unicum. It's just an acquired taste.Quote:There is one critical reason why American college parties suck ass. Jesus Christ, don't these people have any standards? It's true of most British parties too. Most people buy lager that is simply fizzy piss. They then down it whilst drinking vinegar from plastic cups and showing how "hard" they are by drinking lots of shite-quality vodka and spirits. Girls are worst, heavy-drinking large amounts of spirits then trying to come on to people in disgustingly short skirts that should be marketed as oversized belts. Unless you know that the party is going to be otherwise, don't go unless you're bringing a camera and plan to blackmail all the guests later. If this Unicum stuff is evil then I certainly must get a bottle. I'll have to ask my Hungarian friend to get me a bottle next time he's in Budapest. It's too bad actually. I won't be making the normal stopover in Budapest when I fly to Kishinev in Febuary. My stopover will be in Kyiv.DAMN THE FATES! Useless art is simply tolerated vandalism. I am a vandal.

Well, I actually like a lot of lagers - Pilsner Urquell, Staropramen, and Karlovacko being the ones I drink most often. The area of Europe I stay in during the summer is basically exclusively lager territory. But the difference in quality is so vast. I'm used to lager that has a taste, not stuff that tastes like fizzy water. SF-SNEdited by: Stjepan Veliki at: 8/21/05 18:41

Probably Ozujsko. It's the most visible and widespread brand in the country. The only other brand that I can think of that starts with an O is Osjecko, and that's mostly sold in Slavonia. SF-SNEdited by: Stjepan Veliki at: 8/21/05 18:31

22/08/05A local band from Toms River, New Jersey called Divinity Destroyed has won a slot on Dave Mustaine's Gigantour, the metal tour organized by the Megadeth leader. Various local bands competed for the slot in a series of competitions sponsored by the station WRAT. Last year, this band was playing outside of the Cook College student center (after having bee told that they were not supposed to have been performing, despite the invitations they recieved) where they played an impromptu accoustic show that had more people in attendance than the performances inside. (Well met. SF-SNEdited by: Stjepan Veliki at: 8/21/05 21:35
