Renaissance fair, Ric. It's where people dress up as they believe people during the Renaissance probably did and make believe how cool it would have been if everyone was swashbuckling during the Renaissance, and it wasn't just the rich people who had a good time, and women weren't all still bound to their oppressed servitude, and could swashbuckle, philosophise, and rogue it up with the men..
Re: Short LoA
Eh, human beings spend so much time idealizing the past... what's one more excuse to do it? Anyway, no one's yelled at me yet for dressing up like a wizard or druid for Renfest, despite probably being horribly inappropriate for the actual time period. They're obviously scared of my dark powers.

And secretly plotting to burn you at the stake, like in the olde times.Actually, the amounts of shops I say in America that actually had the word "shoppe" in their signs was startling...not even in particularly ancient areas. Not that it has anything to do with what we're talking about, I just remembered.
Re: Short LoA
It depends where in America you visit. On the east coast, and in New England and the Tristate (Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey) areas especially, shoppe is popular because of the predominantly English background. In Boston and around Cape Cod, all you see is shoppe....And renfaires rock. Useless art is simply tolerated vandalism. I am a vandal.
