Do you realize that with this one: http://www.shireroth.org/cgi-bin/cgitest3.cgi you could build an electronic bank for Shireroth ..Let's consult!Austi ScotMiniTrade

Re: Just showing off...
Austi: Indeed. After all, it needs nothing but data persistence (most likely a database backend), user accounts (and all of the interface features required for them - account creation and deletion, changes that can be made by admins, changes that can be made by users, etc.), session tracking (preferably the kind that can work with cookies, POST's input and HEAD's URIs equally well), some heavy security features, features for the actual banking (with everything done as atomically as possible, of course, and with extensive logging), a nice interface, some thorough security audits,...... well, you get the point.Speaking of automated micronational banking, whatever happened to phpMX (cic)?P.s. if it seems that I didn't get the joke, it's because I didn't. Do you really believe Project Bluebook revealed EVERYTHING the Army Air Corps knew? Do you know what REALLY happened at Roswell, New Mexico in the late 1940s? Have you even heard about the Men in Black? Do you have any friends who have `missing days'? Do you sleep with your window unlocked?Be seeing you...Edited by: Ari Rahikkala at: 3/18/04 6:16 am

Re: Just showing off...
well.. that prog was taken straight from a tutorial to help me get scripts running... Though I DO know how to open and read and in theory write to files... I got a prog that would read tax rates from a file. But it's not clean enough to make a bank our of... But a bank MIGHT be on my agenda... Erik Mortis BrookshireCommoner of Alexandretta

Re: Just showing off...
Not worthwhile yet. Remember what once happened to all of the data in the IMN bank? All of the account data in it disappeared. I'm reasonably sure by now (of course I can't be completely sure - for one, I've done my best to ensure that no copies of the code can be found anywhere anymore) that it was because data persistence for that script was provided by... a flat text file that I accessed without even using any locking. Ugly. Uuuuugly. And dangerous as hell. Do you really believe Project Bluebook revealed EVERYTHING the Army Air Corps knew? Do you know what REALLY happened at Roswell, New Mexico in the late 1940s? Have you even heard about the Men in Black? Do you have any friends who have `missing days'? Do you sleep with your window unlocked?Be seeing you...

could you write a script (using the base form of the SC) that persistently posts the text in the file in an ezboard thread in order to keep tabs on unexpected changes? And, if possible, log all interactions in another thread? As of yet.. no. I'm not that far along yet.. I just barely scratched the surface of CGI last night... Anyways.. I got plans for a program that will let people fill out the immigration form on the site.. and it'll post it for them.. and send them to the thread... Erik Mortis BrookshireCommoner of Alexandretta

(note: Yes, I know there's been some redundancy in my messages lately. I blame the intergalactic space walrus.)I might have been a horrible programmer in that time but I wasn't a complete idiot... everything (well, IIRC all of the input to the CGI scripts and every succesful transaction) was carefully logged in a separate file, and I took regular... OK, well, something-like-regular backups of the "database". Yes, they did prevent data loss from occurring in that case (unless all of the data that could have shown that something was lost, was lost). More complex than that... but still... I have a plan to take old SC tech and make an online immigration form that would be filled out on the site and posted to the miniimnat forum. Erik Mortis BrookshireCommoner of Alexandretta

Feianova just implemented a bank which you may like to check out, its integrated into the fora. IF you sign up you can test its features before all of the currency is erased to start the real currency.feianova.hpvoz.net

Ahh ok, I know no code opther than HTML so cannot comment. It is hosted on my own server though and can easily be edited, all of phpBB can be edited if you wish, its open source. Thats a pro on ezboard, you can use the same database for a whole heap of things. And our PM system is just as good as an email system between members.

I have the knowledge to create a relational database, using SQL. There really is no reason to write code – we just need to find server space and an SQL program. I’ve been looking for free SQL space but – that isn’t the way I would like to go. Far better if we pay for the server space, some place that has SQL available. I’ve written and maintained SQL databases for some time. It’s really not difficult. Why should anyone here create code to do something already written?Austi

I did once have a bank thing done.... never got round to working out proper security, backups, and error checking.....and even if it was finished, it has all been lost anyway "Disclaimer: Whatever is in the above post is probably a result of my blind following of Kieran Bennett, because I have even less of a brain than Kieran. Quote: Feianova just implemented a bank which you may like to check out, its integrated into the fora. IF you sign up you can test its features before all of the currency is erased to start the real currency.... you do know the meaning of the verb "to implement", don't you? I mean, there's a difference between actually writing all the code and just installing a piece of software. I'm not trying to be pedantic here, I'm just trying to clear up my confusion. I just checked... the our site doesn't give us SQL or such... Did I mention I'm not taking on the bank project after all? Though I will be using the concept to further my knowledge of perl and CGI.. so I might in advertantly make a bank type thing... Erik Mortis BrookshireCommoner of Alexandretta

Wow - I believe you could actually make a bank - just a little more programming and you'll be there. Perhaps there will be no need for SQL - If you did manage to make a bank it would free up a lot of work for MiniTrade - basic accounting - and make it possible to really work on the economy. Add a "who do you want to pay" field - perhaps a drop down... then read both payor and payee tables and do the math.Austi Edited by: Austi Scot at: 3/21/04 12:35 am
