in Rome, there was no distinct V as we know it today. All V's were used as U's, pronounced as W's, and written like V's...Before I understood this, I was baffled upon seeing this word script (in a sentence of context of course) on the ceiling of a cathedral:"TVVS"which is actually pronounced "To us", and means your or yours... Explicates a tad:The "u" instead of "v" was an artistic liberty I took in order to mimic a tendency of some olde typographers and printers to use "u" instead of "v".The word choices are more of antiquity and coloquialism...I wanted the poem to feel foreign to a degree and at the same time old...The words aren't completely inaccessable, and to grasp the poem, one does not need to know exactly what they mean (i.e. skeet and skeg). A!, þe return to my bardly weys, bolþ confounds þe and intryrgues þe! But, Ay! Ðence I shall go now about my weys, to cant þe goodly songs and delyte þy ear wyþe tunes yet not sung. By fay o' Loki, to alle þy best, be atuned to my wordes, I sing at last. -Gryphon Avocatio- Lord Governor and Duke of all Yardistan - Minister of Research and Education, Shireroth - Shirerothian Elder - SAVE THE KIWI!! - Lover of Llamas "You're intense and driven. I had always thought it was the other way around. where by "U" was represented by "V" so would the used of U be replaced by "v"? and then there was something else I didnt know. On a trip to spain I noticed the City of Corboba had a roman arch which proclaimed "Corbova" is there a switch of B and V as well? And what about those wierd "f" looking things. as in "God fave the King" its not quite an 'f' and not quite an 's' Proud Owner of a Real Horrorshow High-Speed, Low-Drag Sig!

The u over v thing was something some british typesetters did. The Romans didn't have a letter U...They had V, which was the same thing...In spanish, the sound for the letter "v" is the same as that for the letter "b"...so that's probably where that came from, especially since many languages didn't have codified spellings until recently.and the not-quite-f thing is a full fledged s, though I don';t where it came from, perhaps to save space when writing... -Gryphon Avocatio- Lord Governor and Duke of all Yardistan - Minister of Research and Education, Shireroth - Shirerothian Elder - SAVE THE KIWI!! - Lover of Llamas "You're intense and driven. I was told that for whatever reason, the old English used the big f-like s for the beginning and middle of words, and the normal s when s was the last letter of the word. A common practice in old lanugages, though, in retrospect, kind of stupid.

But in spanish the V="B" sound thing isn't quite a "B" sound.. Isn't it a tad off...kinda a vB sound.. or was is Bv sound..Mostly you hear the B.. but some v (thus the small v) can be heard... or was that just ineptnes on the part of my Spanish class.. or both!? Mortis BrookshireKaiser of Shireroth

It's b. There is no "v" sound in spanish. I *think* that in parts of northern mexico and in california where there is a LOT of english influence, you might be right...but in traditional spanish, there is no separate sound for "v"... -Gryphon Avocatio- Lord Governor and Duke of all Yardistan - Minister of Research and Education, Shireroth - Shirerothian Elder - SAVE THE KIWI!! - Lover of Llamas "You're intense and driven. Yes I think there is a "v" sound as I can now think of quite a few proper Spanish names with a 'v' in it. I think this particular situation is due to the Arabic influence in the spanish language at the time. The Roman city of Cordova was improperly pronouned Cordoba over centuries by the Moors. It makes sence. Barcelona has an interesting little inflection, its people use the 'th' sound instead of the 'c' when speaking english. Yet if you go elsewhere, there is no such trouble at all. That's the Catalan dialect though, it's not a "problem" as such, it's not as if they all have terminal lisps or anything. Our principal speaks fluent Spanish, and he lisps on all the c's. Zirandorthel I of TreesiaThe Golden DarknessBelde of the Far Reaches.Niirus TinenetuwarLet the fates burn!

From what I hear.. one of the kings of Spain.. Philip the somethign... had a "th" lisp.. so the language around him kinda changed... since.. if the king does it.. you should to.. kinda mentality.. I tihnk...maybe it was so the King didn't feel bad about the lisp... Mortis BrookshireKaiser of Shireroth

Andalucia does the th-pronuciation on c's and z's too...and I somehow picked that accent up...though american spanish doesn't use it...Y and ll are often pronounced like english J's as well in some accents...which I picked up as wellfor those of you with access to Mago de Oz, they do those...and I think a lot of listening to that caused some of the change...that and my spanish III teacher;s tendency to do so... -Gryphon Avocatio- Lord Governor and Duke of all Yardistan - Minister of Research and Education, Shireroth - Shirerothian Elder - SAVE THE KIWI!! - Lover of Llamas "You're intense and driven.
