An argument about taxation

Post by Ari Rahikkala »

I voted for the current tax system because it was in my interest at the time. By now I don't really care, so I might as well explain how the tax system should work based on my moral principles instead. Don't worry, it's not complex. In fact it's... lump-sum per-duchy taxation :).

Reason? Well, the current progressive wealth tax code is a bit broken. It allows you to be taxed less simply by dividing your money up between accounts. I know heavy use of this would be prosecuted, but to be honest I'm a bit leery about enterprises like the Academy of Elwynn that have a separate account but that don't seem to be having a lot of economic activity. It also isn't very well defined for people with multiple citizenships and possibly bank accounts under multiple jurisdictions.

On the other hand, while merely being wealthy is hardly much of an imposition to the nation, holding a duchy is. It's traditional to try to mention every duchy somehow in pan-Shirithian culture; only having a duchy allows one to vote in the Landsraad; and duchies are also otherwise generally the most important kind of subdivision inside Shireroth. I think it would be well worth it if we returned to the system where each duchy gets taxed 2000 erb at tax day - not because we specifically need to be fair to the duchies (since we don't have voting by erb anymore), but because it's a fair trade between the duchy and the nation.

Mmm ... if we are going to keep taxation, that is by far the easiest solution. You're right, it resolves currency unity issues far easier than any other system. If you can convince the Landsraad to vote for it, I say go for it!
The character Andreas the Wise is on indefinite leave.
However, this account still manages:
Cla'Udi - Count of Melangia
Manuel - CEO of VBNC. For all you'll ever need.
Vincent Waldgrave - Lord General of Gralus
Q - Director of SAMIN
Duke Mel'Kat - Air Pirate, Melangian, and Duke of the Flying Duchy of Glanurchy

And references may be made to Vur'Alm Xei'Bôn (a Nelagan Micron of undisclosed purpose).

I'd like a sales or import tax, but admining that would be murder. This is easier therefore "better".

The Steward would speak in favor of it, but he can't post in the Landsraad..... :rolleyes .....

I like the wealth tax because it encourages people to spend. Thus the currency gets circulated and people increase their holdings, eg: military holdings right now.

Also, the wealth tax encourages spending for other things - expeditions, stories to develop, SHITT happens!
