A thought regarding the Caligaean peninsula

Post by Rai Avon-El »

I write this as the Count of Cape Farewell.

OK, here's the deal. I'd like to make Care Farewell the county of just Cape Farewell. There's so much land I have no use for, that I can't find any history for or even would like to develop. So. Why don't I give the "mainland" of the county to Illumination and Smjörkýr, with my county only having territory over the Caligaean peninsula (the city of Caligae, and the headlands over there)? This would give Smjörkýr access to the sea anyway.

What are your thoughts on this?

Personally I think what you want to do with your county and its land is completely up to you. While I find your offer of land to Nordland very kind I also don't think we need any more as it is. Also I just caped the map to see if I understood what you wanted if this is wrong feel free to correct me.

I believe that Hesam has just re-immigrated and is currently countyless. So I can see the following options open to you:

1. Create a new county out of Cape Farewell. Give either it or Bjorngard to Hesam and we continue with one empty county.
2. Expand Bjorngard with the unwanted parts of Cape Farewell, give it to Hesam and decide which Barony it should belong to.
3. Create a new Barony out of Bjorngard and the split county (as 1.), and make Hesam the Baron, and we still continue with one empty county.

Where a name is required for a new county, I understand that Bjorngard was once known as Byzantium, so that might be an appropriate choice.

Edit: P.S. Naturally some of those options now rely on the decision of the new Duke.

I was actually wondering about that region recently.
Why does it have names in Latin? And why is its biggest city named after boots?

I have no idea, but places and groups of people in the world have strange names.

Caligae sounds cool :P Though I don't like the meaning of the name. I think Ardy gave the city its name. Perhaps he could tell us more?

The "Claims Version" is the most recent, I think.

Caligae forms the root of the cognomen given to Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus... better known as Caligula. So you see, being a city of my foundation, it was all apt in the end.

As for Civitas Nova... this was the founding name for the Italian city subsequently known as Alessandria. I was reading a book at the time written by Umberto Eco called Baudolino which related a fictionalised account of its founding. The book incidentally is an excellent read for any micronationalist. The eponymous protagonist is a deranged fantasist who forged a letter from Prester John to the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa and after many travels he reaches a fantastical kingdom ruled by perpetually arguing incompetent freaks and eventually ends up a prisoner of the Old Man of the Mountain.

That accounts for the names. The motivation behind their establishment was to ensure that the naval forces of the Duchy had safe anchorages on the northern shores and that the depopulated northlands were settled and adequately populated.
