Debannerisation... coming one of these days

Post by Ari Rahikkala »

Earlier today I was contacted by the nth person to have a problem with things in Shireroth that had the word "banner" somewhere in their urls, for the lowest value of n that I can't comfortably think of just a bunch random outliers. The reason is overzealous adblockers that don't like seeing the word "banner" at all. Now if a lot of Shirithians can't see certain images, and there's no reason to believe Shirithians are any less likely to see those images than other micronationalists, it's likely a bunch of people have visited the forum and not seen them. Which of course makes our forum look ugly and unfinished and stuff, which is bad.

I'm going to rename everything that I can find on our forum with "banner" in its url. As soon as I can. The reason why I haven't done it yet is that the moment I had put in the first redirect my internet connection started going wonky... let's hope it's just something temporary on the ISP side. Just thought I might announce it already...

What has been changed: shireroth.kuroshiro.net/images/banners now lives at shireroth.kuroshiro.net/images/wide_icons, with a permanent redirect in place from the former to the latter.

What will be changed (this is the part that will actually have an effect, unless those adblockers work in weird ways) as soon as the connection gets dewonkified: The image urls for the various things pointing to banners/ will be changed to point to wide_icons/.

The simple way to fix any problem: Complain about it on the internet! :yay:

*goes to debannerify places*

There, done. Straylight was already in that directory, but I moved the banners for Brookshire, Elwynn, Kildare, Yardistan and Lac Glacei over. OptiPNG'd what I could (everything except Brookshire whose banner is a jpg and smaller that way than as a png) on the way, too, shaving off a sum of about 8 kilobytes or so.

Do tell me if this change had any interesting side effects or if there are places left to debannerify.

Thank you, I noticed this but didn't know where to thank you. You're a star Ari. The subdivisions are now much nicer to look at. Have we got a smiley that has sunglasses on...? This'll do: :archy

Still not there. It's odd, because before when I first noticed the banners were back, Straylight's was there... but it a few days ago Straylight's disappeared.

Ack... that would be because the redirect just managed to confuse me there... it should work now.

All Duchy banners back, yay!
Overall Banner (at top) still missing. That may well be my background problem ...
The character Andreas the Wise is on indefinite leave.
However, this account still manages:
Cla'Udi - Count of Melangia
Manuel - CEO of VBNC. For all you'll ever need.
Vincent Waldgrave - Lord General of Gralus
Q - Director of SAMIN
Duke Mel'Kat - Air Pirate, Melangian, and Duke of the Flying Duchy of Glanurchy

And references may be made to Vur'Alm Xei'Bôn (a Nelagan Micron of undisclosed purpose).
