Would a Somberero keep your head warm?
Re: I'm evil aren't I?
That is in fact directly opposite to the intend result of wearing a sombrero, so no.

And the straw is loosely woven so air can circulate and keep the head cool. The wide brim keeps the blazing sun off your face and neck to avoid sunburn. A sombrero is great in extreme heat or blazing sun. It does no good in the cold.

I personally use scarves and hoods to keep my head warm in the winter. Sure I may look like an idiot but at least my ears are toasty!

Re: I'm evil aren't I?
Ah, head protection. Here's the facts regarding that: It's not about protecting the *head*. Well, if it's really cold, it is, but that's at the point when you're dressing for preventing hypothermia instead of convenience and comfort. In normal situations around these latitudes, though, the head really can take care of itself, especially if it's got a little bit of hair on it.
No, it's about the ears. Those dastardly flaps of skin are just hanging out about there with their stupidly huge area like we were desert animals or something, radiating away heat and feeling cold and getting frostbitten and being nuisances in general. Any protection for the head in the winter made by a sane person should protect the ears. Of course. since fashion is not for sane people, you can't actually find any tuques that protect the ears in the stores (or at least you couldn't the last time I tried a couple of years ago, and I have no reason to believe it's changed). Oh, you'll find plenty of tiny pieces of cloth, some with pom-pons and some without, some in bright colours and some grey, some properly thick and some so thin they wouldn't even protect you from sunlight, but they're all going to be so tiny I can't even get them to stay on my head, let alone get them over the ears.
Fortunately, my brother works at a company that eagerly gives out properly sized tuques. These hats have inobtrusive advertisements in them, by the way. When I say inobtrusive, I mean the hats are black, and they've got small soft black plastic tabs on them that are located so that they're usually folded against the head anyway, and the tabs have the company name pressed on them in relief. And it's usually dark or twilight when you go out wearing those things anyway. I like that kind of advertising. The other solution I use is earmuffs - not the kind that cups over the ears, just a pair of flat pieces of cloth tightened over metal frames. That's enough for most weathers, really. It presses the ear against the head and covers most of the exposed area. I like the way that works.

Re: I'm evil aren't I?
I can't stand ear muffs. I usually just take a scarf (I have like 10 of them XD) and wrap it around my head so it ties under my chin. As I said before I look like an idiot but my ears are warm. I usually end up hiding it by using a hood to cover it up anyway. Lectriece got me started with wearing a scarf around my head. When it's really cold I usually layer up in two or three scarves at least. One around my head, one or two around my neck and usually one of them is so long that it will wrap around my body and tie at my waist. All that under a nice leather trench coat keeps one nice and toasty.

Re: I'm evil aren't I?
I think I may have a pair of them somewhere. I think my mom bought them for my brother for football but he refused to use them so I got them for riding. I don't really wear them either. I just wear my jeans, a barn jacket, a scarf or two, and put feet/hand warmers in my boots 'cause my toes get cold really easily.Jess wrote:I like thermal clothing, like long underwear...

Re: I'm evil aren't I?
yep I use them when the weather gets really cold. In fact I have a whole stack of them in my room that I got for christmas only I didn't actually go out riding enough and the weather was never cold enough to constitute using them this year so they're still sitting around.Jess wrote:Do you use those hand/feet warmers?

Jess--
I can't imagine Gilrean eating horsemeat. Someone who loves and works with horses is said to love horseflesh, which is similar sounding, but means a very different thing.

One's willingness to eat a certain foodstuff correlates with one's level of starvation. Go without food for a week and you'll be ready to a mouldy rat carcass.

see I'd see eating rabbits before eating horses. Horses are more useful alive. Rabbits on the other hand are probably more useful dead. I mean alive they eat your gardens but dead they give you food and something warm for your head.
