Jonas--With Instant Messenger you can talk to people around the world with no delay. It is like a typed phone call, and the price of it is included in internet service. I speak to people all the time who are in places many thousands of miles from California. You also don't have to wait for someone to answer an e-mail or a Private Message, but you can carry on a conversation with someone, even in another country, for no extra charge.

Speaking for Jonas' corner, I don't use it much either. Except for a very small selection of RL pals. I find it... too absorbing.

Yes, MSN is one brand. I happen to use Trillian, but most are compatible. I like being able to have real-time conversations and not have to wait until someone happens to access emails or PM's. And you don't have to give out your online messenger name unless you wish it.

The arguments laid out here for me mean everyone should get it. It's very useful to get answers very quickly like that, and of course you don't have to give anyone your address/screen name if you don't want to.
