Wouldn't it be prudent to atleast consult the Kaiser before deciding who gets to be his second in command?

IC I-D: The Landsraad may also elect a Steward at anytime they feel one is necessary, with the approval of the Kaiser.

And the Kaiser has yet to comment, therefore there cannot be an election.

The Landsraad may very well elect one, but he or she will have to be approved by the Kaiser.

Do we really need a steward right now? I mean, the steward is there to act as a regent when the kaiser is away, and when I was away I appointed Carol of Lumina's Light for the duration of my "awayness".

What role would the steward fill when there's a kaiser on the throne anyway?

Your right hand man, perhaps? Chair of the Imperial Council? Head Mango picker? Better to have one than stand there without an internet connection and regret not appointing one.

One of our former Lieutenant Governors said that his major duty consisted of calling every monrnng and inquiring about the
state of the governor's health. If the governor was fine, the Lieutenant governor turned over and went back to bed.

John Nance Garner, who served as FDR's vice president from 1933-1941, said the Vice Presidency "isn't worth a bucket of warm spit."

Unfortuately, having an understudy means you are prepared in case of emergrency, but it also means the backup person may have to spend a lot of time catching up on zir reading or take up a hobby. Mike's point is valid. At the very point where you wish you could choose your Steward, you are unable to do so.

After due consideration I nominate myself. I believe I would serve as an excellent sword arm for our beloved Kaiser.

What? But there is just one candidate...

Jess - it's great to hear you have such a positive attitude. But are you sure you're ready for such an important position? It's like making you Kaiser, really, since you'll stand in at certain times. I'm gonna support someone a bit more reliable. I second the nomination of Ardashir.

My thanks noble cousin, and as a gesture of good will I promise to discontinue all further action against Jess in the hope that his newfound positive attitude will continue.

I've reflected upon this and I feel that tradition holds that it is the Kaiser who appoints his steward. Therefore I have decided to appoint Lord Elwynn as my Steward on an interim basis.

Lord Elwynn is a successful and effective politician who has been a friend of mine for several years.

I recognize that in the Shireroth of today we have many citizens whose qualities are shining and who I believe will gain the c of governance for this Empire later on. But in the event of any unforseen eventuality, I feel it is best that my steward is someone I have known for a long time, and that is Lord Elwynn for now. As I'm getting to know the various leaders in Shireroth, I will certainly consider them as replacements when the time comes.

I understand that Baron Jess recently took some controversial actions that might make his candidacy politically unpalatable. But his recent actions in the Musica incident have proven to my satisfaction that his heart is very much in the right place, and that he has a deep concern for his fellow Shirerithians. I know of very few macro-state politicians who would be willing to sacrifice a part of their power, merely because someone who they barely knew asked them to. So I think that when Baron Jess gets the necessary polish and acumen to be a politically acceptable candidate, he will make an excellent Steward and one whom I will have no reservations in voting for. Even though that will not be today because the Kaiser has made his choice directly.

I believe Jess is really trying to contrihute positively to Shireroth now, and merely needs tempering and experience to make him ready to hold such a responsible position. I think a couple of additional years of baronial leadership or additional positions will help prepare him for those great responisibilties.

I agree with Carol entirely. Once the right attitude has been attained, get some experience under your belt and you'll be ready for any position anywhere.
