Re: Job opening: Arbiter
If my consciousness were not floating in the abyss while two deities battle for control of my body, I would. But Mike Fors had asked me to be his Assistant Arbiter before his sudden resignation.
So...your move, your Niftiness.Mike Fors wrote:Are you still interested in the Assistant Arbiter position? You are the best judge on whether or not you have enough time to do the job properly. If you are interested, the position is yours.

Re: Job opening: Arbiter
Up to a point. I can handle it until June, then I might need to pass it off to someone else. I think that me and Leo both want it, so Arbiter and Assistant Arbiter, whichever, suits me fine.

Re: Job opening: Arbiter
Please don't call me my dear, your Niftiness, it's rather condescending. To the point: I am no longer interested in the position of Arbiter. Should someone require an Assistant Arbiter I will be happy to oblige, but after further review of my commitments I don't feel able to perform the duty adequately.

Please, your Niftiness, the mistake is mine. I feel this is the beginning of a long and healthy rivalry. Excuse my rudeness, I beg of you.

Re: Job opening: Arbiter
I would withhold my intention to apply but, given the fact that Arbiters tend to stay in office for quite a long time, I think it best to make my position clear. I would like to be Arbiter.
I've been interested in Shirerithian law for a while, I'm a member of the Mango Bar, and I have been an important part of the formation of the Antican Criminal Code as well as being their Inquisitor (Investigative police force plus District Attorney on a national scale)- currently running for a second term. Thus, I feel myself quite qualified, and am quite willing.

Re: Job opening: Arbiter
I wish to apply for the position of Arbiter as well. I may not be a member of the mango bar (though I would take the test except that a certain Mike has taken an LOA lately) but I am quite versed in the law of Shireroth and keep learning more every day.
I'm fair usually and willing to breath new life into the Judex and see if we can't do something with dusty old court room (like maybe hang some drapes?).
I hope you will consider me as a candidate.

Thank you for your applications, kind Sirs. I will wait a while longer to see if someone else applies, but I do want this resolved as soon as possible. It does not do to be without an Arbiter.

Re: Job opening: Arbiter
If it pleases you, I may consider taking the bar exam to prove my worth as Arbiter. It would be an interesting job for me to pursue.

Ah, so the competition thickens, or something. You are most welcome to state your view of the law and its place in Shirerithian life and culture here. The bar exam is not a requirement for the position.

Re: Job opening: Arbiter
But certainly you do not wish to have an Arbiter who does not have proper knowledge of the law.
The place of the Judex in current times is twofold. First, the Judex is the legal check on the Landsraad and the Kaiser (doubling as legal counsel to the throne). The Judex is granted powers by the Charter to protect and uphold its laws. Second, the Judex is the national legal and civil court, meant to hear cases that have not been fully closed by the lower courts (the Duchies and smaller subdivisions) or that are cases between the duchies themselves (or possibly among Ministries, where Duchies don't really hold authority). This is meant to relieve the burden of the Kaiser in the realm of upholding the law. This is the place of the Judex.
The place of law is merely to protect the well-being of the citizens (not to uphold their rights, which some people believe should be the case) and to provide some semblance of order in a medium where we struggle to enforce them. Laws have little place in our culture. We are a nation steeped in tradition, and on very few occasions have we found ourselves to be a law-heavy state. The Judex defends the laws, not actively seeking where they are broken outside the upper echelons of government.

Re: Job opening: Arbiter
Of course I want an Arbiter that is well versed in the law. The bar exam, however, is just a basic test to prove a minimum of knowledge, not something that can be used for this position. I do thank you for your declaration, and I will consider this matter carefully.
The application process is not closed however, so you have a little time left to convince me.

A wealth of qualified candidates. The Steward would be pleased with any of the three.
