The Landsraad is the name given to the federal legislative body within the Imperial Republic of Shireroth (if the Kaiser isn't counted in). The members of the Landsraad gather in the Hall of Oratory of the Palace of Zirandorthel in Shirekeep.

About

The Landsraad is the federal legislative body of Shireroth. It is nowadays primarily made up of the nobles of the land, with some commoners thrown into the mix.

Landsraad Titles

Each male member of the Landsraad is titled Lord Elector of the Imperial Republic, and each female member of the Landsraad is titled Lady Elector of the Imperial Republic.

In addition to the aforesaid may any member of the Landsraad also be referred to as an Elector. Likewise may members of the Landsraad be referred to as Electors and collectively the membership of the Landsraad may also be referred to as the Imperial Electorate.

Leadership

The Landsraad is overseen by a Praetor who acts to organize, tally and close votes. The Prætor presides over the Landsraad in all matters. The Prætor is authorized to appoint a deputy prætor to assist the Prætor in matters that shall be delegated to the deputy. The Prætor may choose to appoint more than one deputy praetor, provided that in such instance there must be a hierarchy between the deputy praetors.

The Prætor may not vote unless to break a tie. Similarly, any of the deputy prætors is not allowed to vote when presiding unless it is to break a tie.

When the Landsraad has no Prætor in office, the Kaiser (or the Ruling Steward) or zir appointed deputy prætor presides, provided, however, that the Kaiser (or Ruling Steward) or zir appointed deputy has no vote except in ties in those proceedings.

Origin of Name

The word "Landsraad" is ultimately from the Danish, meaning 'council of the land'. It was imported into Shireroth via the Dune novels by Frank Herbert. In Dutch, a recognised language within Greater Audentior, the word Landsraad has the same meaning as in Danish.

Traditions and Customs

  • At the beginning of the daily sitting of the Landsraad the Prætor Summoning Song is sung by the Electors. The aforesaid session is ended with the singing of the national anthem of the Imperial Republic of Shireroth.
  • The text of each Treaty, Bill or Resolution which has been passed by the Landsraad is written down on fine vellum adorned with the coat of arms of the Landsraad as well as such decorations as initials, borders and miniature illustrations drawn with gold, silver and vibrant colours. The Prætor may command that very important treaties - such as the Treaty of Sula Sgeir and the Shirerithian, Alexandrian, and Natopian Entente - be engraved onto tablets of silver and gold.

Landsraad Rule

The Landsraad has at various times in Shireroth's history (briefly) ruled the country in lieu of the Kaiser, usually when the Golden Mango Throne was vacant after the demise or abdication of the Sovereign Lord of Shireroth and the Landsraad was in the process of electing the next Kaiser.
