Notes
The Vankarha Prerasyin Semion ("Foundation For Human Flourishing") of Raikoth conducted in 1640 a Civilian Body Count for the year 1639: 38,246 dead of all causes. 150,000–200,000 internally displaced persons.

The Anarchy of Angularis was a five year period of disorder in which Elw ultra-nationalists and other separatist, anti-monarchist and anti-imperialist groups waged a low level insurgency, gradually extending their influence throughout the Vale of Angularis. These forces were violently suppressed by Elwynnese and Imperial Forces under the overall direction of the Arandur of Alalehzamin and Utasia in the Campaign of 1639, considered by some to be amongst one of the bloodiest episodes in modern Benacian history, second only to the Green Mortality of 1605 in the reign of Kaiser Aiomide.

Prelude: a lawless time on the frontier

A terrible drought had struck the Vale of Angularis in 1632 and by the following year the food reserves had disappeared in thin air. The local nobles, loyally serving the Elwynnese state, had requested for aid, but even the relief that had been sent by their King Noah had been insufficient. Thousands of people had left their birthplace in pure misery to find a better life in the cities of the Hólmlendar, but there they only found even more poverty. Villagers became scared, as more and more peasants flocked together within the city walls. Groups of bandits made the roads unsafe and rumour even spread that one of those groups had sacked a village in Highpass.

It didn't take long before several men and women proclaimed that the leaders had failed and that new ones - preferably themselves - would guide the people to prosperity. Sighvat the Cruel, also known as Sighvat the Yardistani, had risen to fame after his attack on the Lichbrookian village and was feared by many. His followers, who sought to liberate the demon Rrakanychan, were fanatical. One after another villages swore loyalty to him or were wiped of the map. Stories about human sacrifices, slavery of those who resist and more spread like wildfire.

The House of Ayreon-Kalirion was gravely affected by the scandal of Miranda Simrani-Kalirion being seen to marry beneath herself to Frederik Anders, the UDF Brigadgeneral from the Western Marches, inspired her sister, Isabella Simrani-Kalirion, to a cold fury. This, combined with a desire to escape from a marriage match with the House of Ettlingar Freyu, inspired her to take a dozen of the family's retainers, a portion of the Simrani treasure-horde and a liberated main battle tank and to set off to Fiorecittà in pursuit of vengeance. The departure took place on Izillare 14 Vixaslaa, 1632, the date of a left behind for the attention of her step-sister Noor expressing, amongst other things, disapproval of conjugal relations with the Elfinshi.

Brushing past a weakly manned Tellian border post, Isabella swept into Fiorecittà and took the family of the city Burgomaster hostage demanding in return for their release the handing over of Frederik Anders and his family. After a tense stand-off, the Tellian state capitulated agreed to the hostage exchange which took place at an abandoned Ashkenatzim shtetl in the Green. After leaving her sister and nephews in the care of her faithful retainers, Isabella - with a kitchen knife in one hand - dragged Anders into a ruined barn. He was never seen alive again. The so-called Bloody Barn has become a scene of pilgrimage amongst the more morbidly inclined partisans of the House of Kalirion.

The severed head of Frederik Anders was sent to Noor as a gift and a symbol of reconciliation and the restoration of family honour on Izillare 20 Qinamu, 1632.

Isabella then took it upon herself to raise Miranda's children in the hope that they would become faithful servants of the family.

In 1634 the Patroness of Kalir reached an accommodation with erstwhile Steward of Elwynn and paramilitary warlord Tokaray al-Osman whereby she acquired provisions, a cache of weapons, laboratory equipment, forty Land Cruisers and pick-up trucks, as well as an entourage of one-hundred and fifty paramilitaries from the Dark Orchid Society. The security detail was intended to provide protection against brigands such as Sighvat the Yardistani who had attacked settlements in Lichbrook and was believed to be moving closer to the border with the Vale of Angularis.

In late summer of 1634, Isabella and her companions took over an ethnic Ashkenatzim village in the western districts of the Vale known as šiqqǔṣ Mišômēm, and having cleansed the populace established a headquarters and base for the mobile laboratory.

1635

The Dark Ocean Society, having spent years preparing and organising for the overthrow of the Elwynnese Monarchy, eagerly agreed to support the attack on Eliria by mercenaries loyal to Margana Win'Eth, that led to the River War. The timetable of the attack was accelerated when King Noah issued the Royal Decree of 18 Araroqpinu 1635 and ordered the deployment of Longship Guards, Cudgellers and local enforcement officers to the Bailiwick of Allswell, in response to an unrelated attempt on the life of Queen Noor by suspected agents of the Jingdaoese Tegong. Although supportive of the attack and embroiled in the subsequent fighting in Alalehzamin between factions of the Behsaz party the Dark Orchid Society was not invested in an Imperialist victory. It's main objective was to create a disordered environment in which it could continue its activities uninterrupted and slowly supplant the state power. With that objective in mind, it began to step up its activities in the Vale of Angularis, which was the least developed, at least outside the Pale of Angularis of any of the provinces of Elwynn, being the most recently incorporated into Shireroth following decades of anarchy after the fall of Ashkenatza.

Under the cover of suicide bombings attempted against hospitals and the garrisons of Gentlemen-at-Cudgels in Tielion Loki and Azeroth on the 9th of Elroqpinu 1635, the disparate terrorist groups and brigands sponsored by the society began a steady withdrawal westwards towards the untamed frontier with Minarboria and Tellia. There the Society began to try to organise the militants into the core cadre of what they aspired to have become the Elwwehr, a national liberation army, although shortages of manpower, weapons and munitions, means that this 'army' is scarcely equal to a division of light infantry, initially with around 18,000 men and women under arms, only a third of whom have undergone any formalised basic training. The best that most will hope for is to be given a gun and some rudimentary instruction whilst on the march to the west. The rebels for the most part attempted to travel by night and avoided settlements and main roads, reducing the risk of detection whilst considerably slowing their progress. Under orders from the society, no band is to be greater than one-hundred and fifty men in number whilst on the move until they reach the mustering zone, in an attempt - probably forlorn - to prevent the movement being compromised by having any greater number caught in security dragnets. The rebel groups are cellular in structure and currently known only to the leaders and their handlers who remain concealed in civil society, to limit exposure if any one band is captured and interrogated.

Situation in the Vale on Elroqpinu 1635

Sighvat the Yardistani, operating from the southern portion of the Forest of Angularis, remained aloof from the Elw led insurgency, focusing instead on his own depraved holy war, which still remained focused around trying to isolate and storm the Elwynnese administered Tellian enclave of Scoglitto. The Fleur de Lys-Longships Guard played a vital role in keeping the city connected to the outside world by air, maintaining an 'air-bridge' of munitions and supplies to the beleaguered garrison of Cudgellers and conducting regular sweeps by helicopter gunships that kept Sighvat's forces from establishing a permanent presence in the enclave. The siege and blockade of Scoglitto would continue until 1639.

In Nomeziooqu 1635, Isabella's purpose for acquiring laboratory equipment became apparent when she implanted in herself with a fertilised embryo made of genetic material cloned from her father. On Izillare the 20th of Nomeziooqu, 1635, Miranda also gave birth to her first child by Tokaray, Azardokht, whose name means 'Daughter of Fire' in Babkhi. A desire to secure these tenuous threads of genetic continuity, as well as mounting alarm at the power Sighvat was beginning to acquire in the Vale, led the Simrani sisters to begin to look for the means of effecting a reconciliation with their other sister, Noor, who was by this time Queen of Goldshire in her own right. At the same time, Tokaray al-Osman sought to distance himself from the Dark Orchid Society, at least for the moment, sensing, perhaps correctly, that they were moving too fast towards a direct confrontation with the Kingdom of Elwynn, which could ultimately call upon superior firepower, air support, artillery and the massed ranks of the Longship Guards, the Union Defence Force and the Gentlemen-at-Cudgels. As such his priority was to secure the removal of his newly acquired family and retainers out of the Vale.

1636

Whilst refraining from direct action, the Elwwehr grew in strength and coherence. The Dark Ocean Society began to establish its presence in the towns and villages of the Barrowlands and, while the attention of the Longship Guard was turned towards wearing down the forces of Sighvat, began to form what was, for all intents and purposes, a shadow government; one capable of 'taxing' individuals and businesses for protection money, cornering the market in illegal prostitution, drugs smuggling and racketeering, whilst at the same time offering a lucrative career path to youths in an agricultural society only a few generations removed from an era when the ability to fight and wage war was the sole criterion for status and respect.

The Assize

Main Article: The Journey to the West

The Assize would see the Arandur complete a full circuit of the Vale of Angularis beginning in Eribazistaan and ending in Azeroth

The Assize of the Vale of Angularis was undertaken by the Arandur of Alalehzamin and Utasia in the Elw Year of 1639. The Assize was unique in that it combined an inspection of estates, the confirmation of officials in their posts, the administration of justice and a campaign to eradicate the Brotherhood of Lest and the Dark Orchid Society, the latter of which, at that time, operated openly in the Barrowlands of the far west of the Vale.

Thorgils Tarjeisson gathered a number of his retainers and the Emirati Riddare at the Palace of One Thousand Columns in the Royal City of Ardashirshahr on the day of Izillare the 8th of Gevraquun in the year 1639. He was joined there by volunteers recruited from the Norse community and by Babkhi native levies. The Arandur also put out a request for volunteers from the Cudgellers, the UDF and the Vanic Temple Guard to help with public order duties and to provide security for the Arandur and his travelling retinue during their progress.

The Arandur intended to a full circuit of the entirety of the Vale. The Shores of Angularis were the most densely populated and had the longest history of association with the Imperial Republic, formerly as the Transelwynn, an Imperial Dominion ruled as a condominium by the Kaiser and the three sovereign Imperial States as equal partners. After accepting the submission of the main ports and harbours of the Southron Shore the Arandur intended that he would cross the Pale and press on into the hunting grounds of the Forest of Angularis and there organise a cull of the wolf population that would be of benefit to the herdsmen and foresters of the Bailiwick whilst also sharpening the skills of his retinue. After that Tarjeisson would press on into the Barrowlands to confront the anti-regime forces that had long lingered there.

The fleet of river-craft intended to convey the Arandur across the Blue Elwynn to Eribazistaan was assembled at Ardashirshahr by the 1st of Fasmas, 1639.

The Arandur's first attempt at crossing the river was violently opposed by Amokolian nationalists, enraged at their transfer into a Babkhi majority precinct, the Emirate of Alalehzamin and Utasia. In this they were supported by the conievance of local authorities in the town, ironically themselves of Babkhi ancestry opposing an Arandur of Norse extraction. Faced by a riot in the harbourside as he attempted to disembark, the Arandur was obliged to retire. However he did not forget the insult.

After being fired upon from the far bank of the river during the first crossing of the Blue Elwynn, the Arandur returned with greater numbers on the 20th day of Nomeziooqu in the year 1639, with an armada of armed vessels, including an Imperial destroyer, the ZNS Elwynn, that the Minister of Military Affairs had loaned to himself for the occasion. By the morning of the 22nd of Nomeziooqu, the Lord of Eribazistaan was dead, the harbour-side and its defences had been pounded to rubble and every boat in the harbour had been sunk or burnt at its moorings.

Overseeing the restoration of order in Eribazistaan kept the Arandur in that town until the 16th of Araroqpinu 1639 when departed towards Metyl Themar.

Suspected of complicity in the refusal of the Warden of Ebarizstaan to render homage, the Mayor of the Bailiwick, Anousheh Batmanghelidjh, was placed under house arrest by soldiers from the 2nd Elwynnese Brigade (Alalehzamin) to await the culmination of the Arandur of Alalehzamin and Utasia's Assize in the Bailiwick when an inquisition into her conduct would be launched.

The Hjalmar Offensive Operation

An operation launched by the 10th division of the UDF, the Zjandarian Guards, to secure the internal border between Elwynn and Lichbrook and to restore land communications with Scoglitto. Resulted in a number of engagements with the Followers of Rrakanychan and was only a partial success.

The installation, mounted in the bomb bay, increased drag, with a consequential reduction in air speed. Evaluation suggested that aircraft would be potentially vulnerable to ground fire on account having to operate at low altitudes to achieve an effective 'spray pattern effect'. Nonetheless the operation was reported by the Panopticon Corps to have had a significant psychological impact on the targeted insurgents. The modified Mosquito was retained in service therefore under the designation of 'A-1 Dragon'. 0 14 dead;

By the 26th of Elroqpinu, the advance of the 10th division towards Scoglitto was halted by strains on the logistics chain. The two lead brigades, the 2nd Alalehzamin and the 3rd Utasia, required constant daily replenishment of:
1. Ammunition
2. Petrol, oil and lubricants
3. Spare components/machine parts
4. Food
Of food alone in the seven days of operations, 51,548 loaves of bread had to be baked in Azeroth, packed, loaded into transports and sent westwards along roads that required a company from each battalion of Jagers and Huskarls to be held back to guard the roads along which the convoys would travel in order to deter ambush by guerrillas.

As the 10th Division grappled with the unfamiliar problem of logistical planning it called in a management consultant from the Logistics Directorate of the ESB-Jörmungandr Group. Kaizen Porter from Musica duly arrived in Azeroth and gave the assembled officers a comprehensive slide presentation on lean provisioning and just in time theory with regards to supply chain management. Afterwards the officers assembled and held an anonymous ballot. Kaizen Porter was, by a majority verdict, crucified, set alight and then the burning cross was thrown into the waters of the Blue Elwynn. Generalmajor Farbtafeln subsequently surrendered to the City Watch and accepted full responsibility for the grotesque action.

What could not be denied was that the deployment had exposed weaknesses in the UDF's logistical supply chain. These were subsequently addressed by the Tulloch Reforms implemented by the Zjandarian Guard's newly appointed Generalmajor, Petro Tulloch, and subsequently rolled out across the entire UDF.

The Battle of Posada Ridge

With the relief of Scoglitto and the conclusion of the Assize in Fiorecittà, the rebels were being steadily pushed back into the Barrowlands. A concern now arose that the retreating foe, pursued by the Royalist forces from the east and blocked by the Military of Minarboria in the west could either turn north and try to force their way past the Arandur and into Mishalan, or else turn southwards and cross the Imperial frontier into the ungoverned space allocated to the Tellian Confederation by the Treaty of Gloomburg but left unorganised by that paralysed and failing state. The sudden arrival of vast numbers of armed Shirerithian dissidents along the last 'open flank' of the inner Benacian border between Shireroth and Minarboria would be, to put it mildly, problematic.

The decision was made therefore to destroy the rebel forces whilst they were still within Elwynnese territory, no matter the cost. This would however require a dramatic escalation in the involvement of support by the agencies of the MoMA to the UDF and its allies in Angularis. To date the assistance had been quiet and peripheral, focusing mainly on conducting reconnaissance overflights, monitoring communications and providing logistical support and medical assistance.

The operational plan envisaged using an airborne force of paramilitaries, backed by overwhelming air power, to halt and disrupt the retreating columns of Elwwehr long enough for the pursuing Zjandarian Guards to catch up from the east whilst the militias and paramilitaries gathered around the Arandur and his retinue arrived from the North. A further airmobile deployment, this time of FLG Forces Spéciales to the west and VTG Mægencorþor to the south would create a double envelopment within which the Elwwehr and the Followers of Rrakanychan would at last be destroyed.

The plan therefore called for a massive airborne invasion of the Barrowlands. The Posada Ridge, an outcrop of the Kealim Qorbebeoon (Sheepheads Hills) which overlooked the Scoglitto to Savona road as it branched towards Litel and the Tellian enclave of Mamehblinij. The plateau of the ridge consisted of heath-land which was considered ideal for the kind of landings that were envisaged.

The main problem for the drop was that it was going to take place in the heartland of the Israilovsky Host. The Israilovsky kossars remained unreconciled to the Elwynnese Crown and the last envoys from the Elwynns Konungurs Hirð dispatched by the Council of Eliria had met a singularly unfortunate end. A reconnaissance drone monitoring their movements recorded the King's legate being staked out naked in an open field and slowly skinned alive. A helicopter borne extraction party drawn from the Compagnie de la Connétablie Mobile was too late in arriving to effect a rescue and was ambushed for its trouble, losing a Escuier-Chef in the ensuing firefight and forced to abandon one of its helicopters after it was wrecked by a TOW missile. The other members of the delegation were last seen being dragged into a network of caverns beneath a tumulus amongst the barrows of the Amuun Redinzean. A day after the ambush images began to appear on the Elwnet - the hirðmenn had been sold on to the Followers of Rrakanychan and taken alive to be sacrificed to the bloodthirsty shade of that dark chthonic god. These images - pulled offline almost as soon as they appeared by the Panopticon Corps army of censors, lest they damage the cherished Societal Harmony of the Elwynnese Union - turned the stomachs of even the most jaded analysts. After that incident the message from the Council of Eliria to the Arandur and to the commanders in the field was unambiguous - there were to be no second chances and no mercy for the Israilovsky. If they resisted the landings, or were foolish enough to be present when they occurred, they were to be destroyed utterly.

In Mishalan and Alalehzamin frantic efforts were made to assemble and get ready 5,000 assorted aircraft and helicopters for what would be the biggest-ever Shirerithian airborne operation. A force equivalent to three corps of the Imperial Army - S.W.O.R.D., Rrakanychan Watch and the Imperial Order of Technomaezji - equalling 112,265 men and women under arms, plus the Legion of Kalirion were hastily withdrawn from supporting counter-insurgency operations in Goldshire and assembled in and around Mishagrad.

Planning for the operation meanwhile involved the collection of an enormous amount of aerial photo reconnaissance and satellite imagery in order to ascertain what sort of opposition the airborne troops might meet once they had landed. The Magister Primum of the Imperial Shirerithian Air Forces Board was convinced that any opposition that the kossars could put up would be beneath second rate - describing the Israilovsky as "damned silly fools with damned silly hats and damned silly knock-off femurkas" - and when the Director of Rrakanychan Watch warned that there might be Elwwehr panzer divisions in the area he ridiculed the notion, saying whatever armour the Dark Orchid Society had stolen and salvaged up to this point had already been smashed by the Zjandarian Guards west of Scoglitto. Yet intelligence sources recruited by S.W.O.R.D. in the Vale claimed that the 'Blood Honour' and 'Vigilance' divisions were at Xevai Redinzean (Kings' Graves). The Technomaezji were convinced that the Elwwehr lacked access to the machine tools and spares necessary to maintain the vehicles and weapons they still had, let alone, repair anything that had already been knocked out. Like all Imperials, the planners scoffed at the difficulties the 'glorified militias' of the Elwynnese had experienced in combating the insurgents - attributing their difficulties to provincial laxity and fifth columnists left over from the Coordinated State. Instead the Magisters and Directors congratulated themselves over how they were going to deliver the first Imperial Smackdown in seventy years (or rather longer than that if they were in a narrative using the ASC system of chronology...).

Malkenburg's Statnitsa is a fortified kossar village that lies at the heart of the heart of the eponymous Sich, a significant territorial domain within the Barrowlands from which a number of regiments were contributed to the Israilovsky Host. As Hetman Olav Malkenburg controlled the largest force of Israilovsky in the landing zone, and was suspected of culpability in the earlier massacre of the Elwynnese delegation, his elimination was an essential prerequisite for the operation.
