Conflicts & Deployments

The Imperial Army is the principal land warfare force of the Imperial Republic of Shireroth. The force is administered by the Ministry of Military Affairs. The professional head of the Imperial Army is the Magister Primum, who is head of the Collegium Magistri Militum or College of the Magisters (i.e. the General Staff).

Organisation

The structure of the Imperial Army is relatively streamlined into legions and corps divided between four armies. The Palatini Corps, charged with the defence of the Kaiser, Shirekeep and the Imperial County, remains independent of Land Command, having evolved out of the Kaiser's old bodyguards - the Order of Kampioens and the Apollonian Guard.

Formations and Structure

Units are divided into Spear units (i.e. Infantry), Lance units (i.e. Cavalry, Pioneers, Special Forces, etc), and Ballista units (i.e. Artillery).

Spear units form the organic components of the standard salb (legion), which are organised into constituent cohorts, which themselves are composed of maniples. Lance units are organised into specialist corps comprised of independent vexillations, which are composed of squadrons. Ballista units are also organised into specialist corps consisting of independent divisions, which are composed of batteries.

Vexillations and Divisions may function independently (e.g. special forces, THAAD, etc), or are attached to legions in order to provide combined-armed support. Independently-deployed vexillations and divisions will have other support units attached to it. Vexillations serve as a primary source for fresh commissioned officers and are intentionally officer-heavy as a result.

Legions may be designated as Light or Heavy, depending on the level to which its cohorts are equipped and trained for mechanised and air-mobile armoured combat.

Maniples are named with the number of their cohort followed by "Hastati", "Principes", or "Triarii", thus the third maniple of the 1st Cohort is referred to as "1st Triarii" or 1T.

Combat Groups

Legions are nominally organised into ten cohorts of infantry with other units attached in support. When deployed, the legion is reorganised into ten Combat Groups, built up around each of the legion's cohorts. The combat support units' staffs join the Legionary HQ in order to provide continuing support to Legionary HQ and to their own distributed sub-units. When a legion is significantly reinforced by additional afzælt (divisional) units of specialists, auxiliaries or allied troops, the Legate will receive a brevet promotion to Dux (Major General / Frainan Uihmanzis) for the duration of his expanded command.

Combat units may be deployed independently of the remainder of the legion. Under these latter circumstances they are often referred to as streïkruppis.

The most typical variety of Imperial Army units are structured as follows:

The Riverine Army

Responsible for the defence of the River Elwynn and the approaches to Shirekeep. Lost its landing craft to the Corps of Auxiliaries in 1647, placing its future in doubt. As of 1651 it exists, on paper, as the garrison of the Imperial Duchy of Brookshire. The strength of the force was rebuilt during the 1650s, in the face of official indifference, largely by the initiative of local commanders.

Beginning in 1658, the Riverine Army began to receive surplus coastal patrol boats and logistic support vessels, a legacy of the glut of naval production during the War of Lost Brothers, improving the Army's capacity for conducting long range operations along the length of the River Elwynn and its tributaries.

The force received its first operational deployment in 1660, having been commanded by the Steward Mira Octavius-Aryani to contribute forces to the suppression of a nationalist revolt in Elwynn.

The Army of Arboria

Established as the Reserve Army in Goldshire in 1644 to provide the Imperial Army with a pool of manpower and formations to replace units worn down through attrition in combat. Deployed to Natopian Arboria in 1647/1648 in the aftermath of the War of Jingdaoese Immolation and renamed as the Army of Arboria in mid 1648.

Recruitment, training and advancement

Following the defeat of Monarchist Forces during the opening phase of the Benacian Reconquest, the Imperial Army can recruit from throughout the length and breadth of the Imperial Republic without any longer having to cringe to the separatist and particularist vanities of the rulers of the Imperial States.

Recruits to the infantry arm learn their trade through basic training after being enrolled into the Hastii maniple of their designated Cohort. (Condensed blurb of legionary training goes here). Trainee Specialists are generally chosen from the ranks of the newly inducted munifex, based on certain aptitude tests, and will be transferred across to the Lance or Ballista Corps, if they are not chosen for development within the Spear career path. This leads to some resentment that the infantry seeks to retain the most promising specialists for maturation into its own future principals and ordinates. Specialist basic training will typically take place at the closest MoMA Garrison or Station to the transferring legion before assignment to unit. Basic training will normally, not counting transfers and remedial courses, take twenty-four weeks to complete.

The entry route for officers into the Imperial Army is through the specialist Vexillations of the Lance and Ballista Corps. Beginning their careers at the Draconary or Cornet rank, trainee officers will complete their initial officer training in one of the MoMA Garrisons before being assigned to a Vexillation or Division of one of the four armies to learn their specialism. Specialist Officers, upon reaching the rank of Decurion, will frequently undertake tours of duty outside of their parent unit and indeed specialism in order to broaden the depth of their experience and to prevent their thinking from becoming hidebound and narrowly focused. Upon reaching the rank of cohort tribune, officers can expect to spend at least one tour of duty in charge of an infantry cohort. Those who excel in combined arms operations can eventually expect to find themselves regularly posted into the staff of a legion or battle group with the aspiration, one day, of attaining the exalted rank of legate and to receive the Lion Staff, a baton of rank blessed by the Kaiser himself.

A key route to advancement through the Imperial Army is through gaining the favour and patronage of more senior officers. The rotation through various postings, known as the cursus honorum militae, is the principle means by which junior officers build the necessary network of contacts and reservoir of favours rendered and owed to assure advancement at the yearly Corps and Army assessment boards. There have been noted instances of senior officers abusing the patronage system prevalent in the Imperial Forces to solicit sexual favours and bribes. The Chamber of the Crypteia will usually clear up the most flagrant instances of corruption in public office, although other creative punishments have been utilised. In spite of this it is not technically illegal to purchase promotion, providing one is of sufficient nobility and the wealth has been inherited by virtue of birth and breeding rather than acquired through anything so demeaning as a trade. In spite of the officer corps being heavily skewed towards the grades of the nobility, there remains a need to ensure that some officers hold knowledge specific to their specialism-in-arms. Accordingly promotions from the ranks of the ordinate are not unknown, however these officers are not well regarded, particularly if they cannot afford the mess bills from their regular wages, and tend to remain condemned to the junior ranks for the majority of their subsequent careers. Many will, in the fullness of time, find their way into the Corps of Auxiliaries or the other branches of the Shirerithian Supplies Service where prejudices against the Immeritus are considerably less prevalent.

Once recruits have been returned to their units their ongoing training then becomes a part of the normal manipular and cohors unit training cycle. Training for operations will normally take the form of waging war against local dissidents, separatists and communities that have neglected to pay their taxes or make a timely submission to the Golden Mango Throne. For those legions garrisoned in the territories of the Imperial States, where attacking the local population is not an option, short term deployments to Batavia, Voltrue and the former Empire of Minarboria will provide the opportunity for combined-arms practice against recalcitrant minority groups.

History

Following the re-establishment of the Imperial Army in the wake of the Tarjeisson Reforms of the Martial Code, a legion of five regiments would have at least two core regiments that pertained to its mission function as well as any additional squadrons or troops required to perform operationally. A legion on operations was expected to be reinforced by additional auxiliaries subject to its particular circumstances and objectives, in which case it form the core of a battle group, known as a vexillatio. An Imperial Legion of the 1630s and 1640s was therefore broadly equivalent to a Brigade level formation in the Elwynnese Union Defence Force, although the UDF typically maintained fewer more overpowered fighting formations than the Imperial Army, in line with its doctrine of making short, sharp and decisive interventions. The doctrine of the Imperial Army on the other hand was typically to hold and stabilise territory after enemy formations have been disrupted by the strategic forces of the Imperial Republic.

Legions could be transferred into and out of Corps which were broadly territorial in character. The Armies to which these formations are assigned - Field, Frontier, River and later Arborial - defined their general mission, whether primarily offensive and defensive according to their designation. According to Imperial Doctrine, only the Field Army was expected to undertake offensive actions at the operational and strategic levels.

Following the Oustfest Massacre administrative divisions were abolished as an unnecessary bridge in the chain of command between the tactical and operational level formations.

Operating initially under the constraints of the Martial Code, the Imperial Army recruited exclusively from Shirekeep and the Imperial Dominions as well as any territory that they might temporarily occupy, such as Goldshire during the period of martial law.

Recruitment included the taking in of volunteers, but also frequently relied upon forms of impressment, notably the Impressment Service. This service, known colloquially as the Press-Gang, operated on a large scale with a force of men in likely river ports and towns in the Imperial County and Mishalan. These men were armed and possessed "warrants" from the MoMA for their operations. Their "catches" being then conveyed to Receiving Ships in the midstream of the Blue and White branches of the Elwynn which then, when their cargo holds are full, would take their "haul" downriver and out to sea - eventually depositing them on the island of Zy-Rodun for personality adjustment, indoctrination and basic training. The main defect of this training method was that it tended to encourage ruthlessness, brutality and subservience at the cost of flexibility, flair, imagination and individual initiative. Imperial legions trained in this fashion tended to follow set procedures and schedules with scant regard to their relevance to prevailing local conditions, one consequence of which was that operations would frequently miscarry once timetables - inevitably - went awry.

The Imperial Army campaigned in the Civil War in Goldshire where its poor performance against an ill-equipped and fractious alliance of rebels prompted a review of its organisation and structure. In 1644 the Kaiser Dominus decreed an increase in the allocation of manpower to the Imperial Army, increasing its size from 275,000 personnel across 347 regiments to 600,000 personnel in 500 regiments. The same decree mandated for the first time the establishment of 100 Imperial Legions, as the brigade strength fighting formations of the Imperial Army.

The structure of the units of the Imperial Army and their subordinate components prior to the Octavian Reforms of 1652 AN

The highly variable performance of the Imperial Army (woeful in the Civil War in Goldshire, superb during the Auspicious Occasion, merely adequate throughout the Sxiro-Jingdaoese Confrontation) had increased the impetus for a more thorough reorganisation of the Imperial Army so as to impart greater tactical flexibility. The result of which was the Octavian Reforms of 1652 AN which rebuilt the legions around drastically scaled down and simplified Infantry regiments, know known as cohorts, supported by independent vexillations or unit detachments of specialists integrated at the Corps level and assigned to legions according to operational necessity. The reforms were first trialled in the Frontier Army as it deployed to stabilise the west following the Auspicious Occasion.

As part of the Octavian Reforms, and in view of their performance in the marginally successful border war which had resulted in the establishment of the Lywall Protectorate, the inventory of 2,400 80mm Field Guns and 12,000 Kern Industries Battlewagons were withdrawn from frontline service and donated to the Goldshire Regulars in order to augment that force's firepower and self-defence capability.

At some point around late 1653 a mood of existential despair began to grip the officer corps. It was as though, as one remarked:

Whenever we tried to pick up one thread of detail from either the Tarjeisson or the Octavian system and tried to incorporate them into our TO&E (Table of Organisation and Equipment) we would lose that same thread almost immediately, as though the universe were somehow conspiring against us, and the overall picture would fray and warp to the point where any semblance of coherence and order in our unit formation was rapidly lost.

— Legate Porfirio Uribe, LXI Legion, Memoirs (Suppressed by order of the Chamber of the Crypteia)

Another anonymous official remarked:

A large part of the struggle was getting back to first principles. In theory the Octavian cohorts worked well for the legions, but in practice moving from regiments of ten squadrons to cohorts of three maniples, with armoured, artillery and engineering vexillations bolted on at the legion and corps level rather than being formally integrated into the legion as of old was a shock to the system. Moreover, none of us were at all sure what we were meant to do with the auxiliaries who seemed to drift between corps and garrison and commands in a cheerful obliviousness and with no clear sense of what their parent formation and function actually was. It was always a pain trying to incorporate auxiliaries, who were meant to provide combat support services to our mobile formations into the order of battle as they always seemed more intent upon doing their own thing. Half the time you had to watch the auxiliaries assigned to your command to make sure that they didn't try to drift off and loot the nearest village. They were a great trial.

The Corps of Auxiliaries was a formation of the Shirerithian Supplies Service, intended to provide combat logistical support services to the three arms of the Imperial Forces, they formed the bedrock of the garrisons (the regional military districts into which the continental commands such as Benacia Command were divided) to which Imperial Army corps and legions were assigned. In spite of the brief of the auxiliaries being to support the combat arms, the magisters, as well as the admirals and air marshals for that matter, found the pretensions of garrison and station commanders to be a continual source of irritation.

Postwar

Following the disappointing performance of gravimetric vehicles in providing infantry close support, and the still more disappointing failure of the infantry to provide close support to the deep penetrating spearheads of the Bandersnatches and Jabberwockies. The Imperial Army placed an emergency order with Red Bear LLC of Mishalan for 568 "Whirdlebird" assault helicopters to augment the GAV(U)-4 Jackalope in the force mobility role. Concurrently the continuing production of gravimetric vehicles was skewed towards the Leviathan, a vast new mobile command platform developed by Ryker Airships of Goldshire, initially for its own forces but subsequently for the Palatini Corps also.

The post war period saw the Imperial Army deployed repeatedly in pacification operations in Inner Benacia.

The year 1660 saw a seemingly irretrievable rupture between the Imperial Government and the Nationalist and Humanist Party, sparking a revolt and civil war in Elwynn. This new conflict tested the loyalties and professionalism of many officers who had enjoyed advancement during the Dravot-Zinkgraven administrations, and who then found themselves caught between the terror tactics of their former ideological comrades and the remorseless purges unleashed by the Chamber of the Crypteia.
