<div>Shireroth was founded April 24, 2000 by [[Erik Mortis]]. It spent the majority of its early history as a client state to the great powers of the day, including [[Audentior]], [[Jasonia]], and [[Tymaria]]. After the fall of Tymaria, Shireroth emerged as the most powerful of its successor states. It was both able to collect most of the remnants of the old [[Apollo Sector]] micronationalists and gather a native community of its own consisting mostly of students at Sonoma State University in California.<br />
<br />
By 2003, Shireroth's post-Tymaria glory days were gone, and many observers thought it was being outcompeted by flashier micronations like [[Menelmacar]]. In response, [[Steward Nikkolo]] declared "[[Oustfest]]", a tradition of kicking out anyone with more than three citizenships as insufficiently loyal. The tactic worked, with a smaller, sleeker core of patriotic citizens more willing to place Shirerithian interests first, and became a yearly occurence. Around the same time, the unpopular [[Kaiser Mog I]] was overthrown by [[Kaiser Letifer I]], creating a Shirerithian tradition of revolting at the drop of a hat.<br />
<br />
The next few years saw many highlights, including the [[War of the Wylthean Succession]], an ultimately failed pro-democracy movement by rebel [[Philip Locke]], and the reduction of and combination of the country's many Duchies into six "classic" ones: [[Brookshire]], [[Goldshire]], [[Elwynn]], [[Kildare]], [[Yardistan]], and [[Straylight]]. This era ended when [[Kaiser Yarad I]] attempted the brave but ultimately doomed "[[New Feudalism]]" experiment, in which the country's traditional feudal structure was turned on its head to allow more independence and bargaining between counties. Around the same time, many of Shireroth's traditional enemies allied into a "[[Grand Commonwealth]]" designed to check Shirerithian power; due to poor communication between the government's many ministries and branches, Shireroth's response was lackluster at best. For a combination of reasons including the new feudalism, a series of weak Kaisers, foreign stagnation, and bad luck, many Shirerithians departed and by 2007 the country was in a state of complete disrepair.<br />
<br />
In October 2007, Jonas (illegally) took the Throne as [[Mahamantot I]] to restore order in the Shirerithian lands. However, Erik Mortis returned and took the royal name [[Kaiser Mors V]], and along with tech guru [[Ari Rahikkala]] led the "[[Great Consolidation]]", a reconstruction of Shireroth's institutions that shook off the inactivity of the past year. After Mortis' abdication, a long civil struggle began between a faction based in Shireroth's ally [[Babkha]] and a second faction that wanted to see ex-Cyberian [[Jacobus Loki]] on the throne. The early dominance of the Babkhan faction collapsed when it was revealed to be a front for a Babkhan plot to take over the country, and Jacobus took the throne as Kaiser Loki the Long-Awaited in 2008.<br />
<br />
Through 2009, Shireroth gradually collected new citizens, repaired its relationship with Babkha, gained international prestige as the home of the Small Commonwealth, and otherwise enjoyed growing prestige and power abroad completely unmarred by a series of constant low-grade feudal struggles at home. Most recently, long-standing debates between traditionalists and liberals resurfaced in battles over Shireroth's beloved but graphically questionable flag and in [[Kaiser Agni I]]'s controversial disbanding of the Duchies in favor of a system of noble houses. These two arguments created an era of bad feelings that led to several Shirerithians "ragequitting", especially during the short but exciting reign of [[Kaiseress Anandja II]]. Her successor, [[Kaiser Ikol II]], declared an "Age of Tranquility" in which he hoped to resolve some of these bad feelings but failed in doing so.<br />
<br />
Disagreements led to a secession of Elwynn and Straylight in August / September 2010. Kildare remained loyal to the Crown and became the only powerhouse within the Empire, overshadowing the once so glorious Duchies of Brookshire and Yardistan. At the nation's lowest point, Erik Mortis took the throne a final time as Kaiser Ometeotl I and pulled parts of the country back together. However, the nation remained tied down by a lack of citizens and by unpopular Kaisers such as [[Cedris I]]. In 2012, [[Kaiser Loki IV]] brought some order back to Shireroth, restoring the traditional Duchies, and a trickle of old citizens began to return, perhaps portending a more hopeful future.<br />

[[Kaisership]] of [[Shireroth]], serving as both a convenient shorthand for the true identity of a Kaiser, and as a fictional blood connection to all the other Kaisers. <br />

Each bloodline represents a lineage of Kaisers, supposedly descended from [[Kaiser]] [[Raynor I]], the mythical founder of Shireroth.<br />
<br />
== Origins and Use of the Bloodlines ==<br />
According to the [[Fictional History]], the founder of Shireroth and the first Kaiser, Raynor I, had three children. <br />
<br />
The first was a daughter, and the other two were sons. <br />
<br />
At the time of his death, succession by females was not allowed, and so the elder brother became Kaiser as [[Brrapa I]]. <br />
<br />
However, this apparently did not prevent descendants of Raynor's daughter, or of his other son, from being eligible for the Kaisership, because after the death of Brrapa's son [[Erik I]], the Kaisership was passed to a descendant of Raynor's daughter.<br />
<br />
Each of Raynor's children was the progenitor of one of the Bloodlines, and these in turn branched off into yet other Bloodlines. <br />
<br />
It seems likely that any of the descendants of Raynor I must belong to an Imperial Bloodline, documented or not, and would thus theoretically be eligible for the Kaisership.<br />
<br />
This helps to explain the present real-life use of Bloodlines in the Kaisership. Because of the processes by which the Crown is passed on (see [[Kaiserial Succession]]), a relatively large number of individuals have managed to be Kaiser at one time or another, most of whom have done so several times. <br />
<br />
Given that most Shirerithians like to at least pretend like their institutions are real, this brings up the interesting problem of individuals becoming Kaiser, reigning for a few months, leaving, then coming back later, a most un-monarchical sort of behavior.<br />
<br />
The rationalization for this, in the context of the fictional background, is that it is not that an individual is coming back as Kaiser multiples times under different names; it is simply that the Kaisers in question are members of the same lineage! <br />
<br />
As a result, each Kaiser becomes either a member of a pre-existing Bloodline, or begins a new one, and future Kaiserial incarnations of that individual are generally of the same lineage. As a result of this, most Bloodlines in current use can be identified with a single person, or with a specific set of people. <br />
<br />
Individuals who are new to being Kaiser are either given a place in an older Bloodline, or found a new one. It is traditional for each Bloodline to have a set of reign names unique to it, from which Kaisers of that Bloodline will draw upon. For instance, the [[Line of Raynor]] uses only one name; all reigning members are called Raynor (e.g. [[Raynor I]], [[Raynor VI]],<br />
[[Raynor X]]).<br />

<div>The Morimoto Cycle is a series of stories in Shireroth centering around two immortal characters: Maria Morimoto and Nik Raesin. It takes place mainly in Straylight.<br />
<br />
==Plot==<br />
<br />
A genetic engineering experiment in Straylight sought to create an immortality virus. The experiment was generally a failure; however, one subject, young biologist Maria Morimoto, did become immortal and concealed the success from the researchers. Morimoto leveraged her immortality to become rich and powerful, and eventually to buy out the pharmaceutical company testing the immortality drugs, which she then concealed from public knowledge.<br />
<br />
Two thousand years later, mercenary Nathan Ross recovers from an injury suffered during the Amokolian War. Ross has a secret: he is the same person as legendary Audente admiral Nik Raesin. Raesin is on the record as having died two thousand years ago; in fact, he has survived over two thousand years, though he has no idea why. During that time he has developed a healthy paranoia and system of frequent identity changes, assuming that if anyone discovered his secret he would be locked up and subjected to endless medical experimentation.<br />
<br />
Maria visits Nathan in the hospital, and reveals the secret of his immortality: the two made love in a hotel two thousand years ago, allowing the immortality virus to pass from Maria's body to Nathan's. This has happened several times in the past, but Maria, driven by the same paranoia, has always discovered, hunted down, and killed potentially "competing" immortals. Nathan is the only person she has consistently been unable to locate; now she has caught up with him and intends to kill him. Nathan gives an impassioned speech about their similarities, and Maria appears moved. The two make love again; this turns out to be an opportunity for Maria to deliver a deadly illness which she hopes will kill him; instead, thanks to a lot of luck and the skill of his doctors, he barely survives. He arranges for the hospital to fake his death and creates a new identity under which he intends to discover Maria's secrets and thwart her.<br />
<br />
Under the identity of Nereus Rotenaard, he opens a shipping business in Straylight, becoming a pillar of the community and eventually rising to the rank of Duke. This is part of his plan, as it will give him the accesses he needs to discover Maria's plots. The day before his coronation, he meets Kender Ly'Sakerdoet, a priest who gives him oddly prescient advice before revealing himself to be a teknomaezj, part of the shadowy, government-sponsored order dedicated to eliminating magic from the world under the banner of human science. He admits that the teknomaezji have their own reasons to want Maria dead, proposes an alliance, and reveals that her final plan is nothing less than world domination.<br />
<br />
In order to smoke out Maria, Nereus signs an underhanded deal to deliver Straylight to its old enemy, the Duchy of Yardistan. The Yardistanis invade, prompting a civil war. In the chaos, it is simple for Nereus to disable Maria's defenses, which reveal she is hidden in an undersea base. He launches a military expedition to destroy the base and capture Maria, but Kender, who has joined him, behaves out of character. He confronts the priest only to discover it is not Kender at all, but a mysterious creature who turns into a dolphin and swims away after making vague threats.<br />
<br />
Upon reaching Maria's underwater lair, Nereus discovers that the fortress has already been breached, and Maria abducted. The culprits are the dolphin-creatures, about whom he soon learns more. They are the remnants of the ancient So-Saran Empire, which destroyed itself through the overuse of magic, eventually begetting the teknomaezji crusade against magic users and the current anti-magic sentiment. THe most powerful mages in the empire escaped underwater as dolphins to escape the catastrophe, and live on; however, their magic is limited by being constantly depleted to maintain their immortality. They want the secret of Morimoto's virus to give them natural immortality and free their arcane resources.<br />
<br />
In a daring raid with the help of the Yardistani navy, Nereus attacks the magic users' hideaway in the seas near Istvanistan. In a climactic battle, he manages to steal a magic knife from the leader of the users, which he recognizes as an artifact with the power to transform people into dolphins. Escaping with Maria, he eventually leads the users into an ambush by Yardistani infantry, who arrest them on charges of "transporting a girl across state lines for immortal porpoises". Maria is taken captive, and they return to the Straylight capital of Discontinuity.<br />
<br />
On the trip back to Discontinuity, Nereus makes a decision. He is unwilling to let Maria live, since her quest for power poses a grave threat to Shireroth and beyond. But during his encounters with her, he has come to care for her, and cannot bring himself to kill or imprison her either. In an impulsive decision, he stabs her with the magic knife, turning her into a dolphin; she jumps over the side of the boat and swims away. Nereus assumes that, without the ability to use tools or communicate, she will be neutralized.<br />
<br />
Fifty years go by. Nereus, tired of immortality, has taken a chemical formulated by Kender Ly'Sakerdoet that has neutralized the immortality virus. He grows old and is diagnosed with cancer. One night on the beach with his dog, he sees a woman rise from the sea. She identifies herself as Maria Morimoto, and claims that everyone has latent magic powers; rather than be trapped as a dolphin forever, she identified and developed them and can now transform at will. She offers Nereus the chance to re-contract the virus and live with her forever; he refuses, bequeaths his dog to Maria as a last gift, then dies. Maria turns the dog into a sea lion, then vanishes into the ocean, with the cryptic remark that she seems to be becoming a goddess, and that it's about time.<br />

==Plot==<br />

A genetic engineering experiment in Straylight sought to create an immortality virus. The experiment was generally a failure; however, one subject, young biologist Maria Morimoto, did become immortal and concealed the success from the researchers. Morimoto leveraged her immortality to become rich and powerful, and eventually to buy out the pharmaceutical company testing the immortality drugs, which she then concealed from public knowledge.<br />
<br />
Two thousand years later, mercenary Nathan Ross recovers from an injury suffered during the Amokolian War. Ross has a secret: he is the same person as legendary Audente admiral Nik Raesin. Raesin is on the record as having died two thousand years ago; in fact, he has survived over two thousand years, though he has no idea why. During that time he has developed a healthy paranoia and system of frequent identity changes, assuming that if anyone discovered his secret he would be locked up and subjected to endless medical experimentation.<br />

Maria visits Nathan in the hospital, and reveals the secret of his immortality: the two made love in a hotel two thousand years ago, allowing the immortality virus to pass from Maria's body to Nathan's. This has happened several times in the past, but Maria, driven by the same paranoia, has always discovered, hunted down, and killed potentially "competing" immortals. Nathan is the only person she has consistently been unable to locate; now she has caught up with him and intends to kill him. Nathan gives an impassioned speech about their similarities, and Maria appears moved. The two make love again; this turns out to be an opportunity for Maria to deliver a deadly illness which she hopes will kill him; instead, thanks to a lot of luck and the skill of his doctors, he barely survives. He arranges for the hospital to fake his death and creates a new identity under which he intends to discover Maria's secrets and thwart her.<br />

Under the identity of Nereus Rotenaard, he opens a shipping business in Straylight, becoming a pillar of the community and eventually rising to the rank of Duke. This is part of his plan, as it will give him the accesses he needs to discover Maria's plots. The day before his coronation, he meets Kender Ly'Sakerdoet, a priest who gives him oddly prescient advice before revealing himself to be a teknomaezj, part of the shadowy, government-sponsored order dedicated to eliminating magic from the world under the banner of human science. He admits that the teknomaezji have their own reasons to want Maria dead, proposes an alliance, and reveals that her final plan is nothing less than world domination.<br />

In order to smoke out Maria, Nereus signs an underhanded deal to deliver Straylight to its old enemy, the Duchy of Yardistan. The Yardistanis invade, prompting a civil war. In the chaos, it is simple for Nereus to disable Maria's defenses, which reveal she is hidden in an undersea base. He launches a military expedition to destroy the base and capture Maria, but Kender, who has joined him, behaves out of character. He confronts the priest only to discover it is not Kender at all, but a mysterious creature who turns into a dolphin and swims away after making vague threats.<br />

Upon reaching Maria's underwater lair, Nereus discovers that the fortress has already been breached, and Maria abducted. The culprits are the dolphin-creatures, about whom he soon learns more. They are the remnants of the ancient So-Saran Empire, which destroyed itself through the overuse of magic, eventually begetting the teknomaezji crusade against magic users and the current anti-magic sentiment. THe most powerful mages in the empire escaped underwater as dolphins to escape the catastrophe, and live on; however, their magic is limited by being constantly depleted to maintain their immortality. They want the secret of Morimoto's virus to give them natural immortality and free their arcane resources.<br />

In a daring raid with the help of the Yardistani navy, Nereus attacks the magic users' hideaway in the seas near Istvanistan. In a climactic battle, he manages to steal a magic knife from the leader of the users, which he recognizes as an artifact with the power to transform people into dolphins. Escaping with Maria, he eventually leads the users into an ambush by Yardistani infantry, who arrest them on charges of "transporting a girl across state lines for immortal porpoises". Maria is taken captive, and they return to the Straylight capital of Discontinuity.<br />

On the trip back to Discontinuity, Nereus makes a decision. He is unwilling to let Maria live, since her quest for power poses a grave threat to Shireroth and beyond. But during his encounters with her, he has come to care for her, and cannot bring himself to kill or imprison her either. In an impulsive decision, he stabs her with the magic knife, turning her into a dolphin; she jumps over the side of the boat and swims away. Nereus assumes that, without the ability to use tools or communicate, she will be neutralized.<br />
<br />
Fifty years go by. Nereus, tired of immortality, has taken a chemical formulated by Kender Ly'Sakerdoet that has neutralized the immortality virus. He grows old and is diagnosed with cancer. One night on the beach with his dog, he sees a woman rise from the sea. She identifies herself as Maria Morimoto, and claims that everyone has latent magic powers; rather than be trapped as a dolphin forever, she identified and developed them and can now transform at will. She offers Nereus the chance to re-contract the virus and live with her forever; he refuses, bequeaths his dog to Maria as a last gift, then dies. Maria turns the dog into a sea lion, then vanishes into the ocean, with the cryptic remark that she seems to be becoming a goddess, and that it's about time.<br />

As Count of Modan-Lach he pursued a highly centralized policy of economic development and intends to develop the small county into a cultural hub of Southern Shireroth. Development with the [[Laqi]] language gave his barony a cultural name for itself, but Hadjimehmetov's support for Mors V and his bombing of the Elwynn Sluice in January 2007 during the Shirereithan Civil War at that time caused him to resign Shirereithan citizenship at protest for unfair administration and bias against his faction in the Civil War.
