==The Beginning==<br />

Gryphon first joined at some point in February of 2001, before the [[Hegemony of Alexandros]] was created. He was invited by his close friend [[Erik Mortis]] (who was at the time known as [[Kaiser Metzler I]]). He was barely active, but counted among the citizenry of the nation. When the HoA started, he began to post every once in a while on the HoA board. He took the name Nick the Yardistani after being annexed by the [[Yardistani Annexation Corps]] some time back. Sometime either in Alexandros or [[The Republic of Tymaria]], Gryphon claimed Yardistan as his own, basically usurping it from its originator [[Stjepan Aracic]]. It became generally accepted that the territory was his.<br />

Most of what Gryphon did in his early days was stir up trouble. He mostly felt displeasure towards many of the senior members of the nations he was in and their apparent unwillingness to notice newbies. That all changed when the [[Whit Rebellion]] occurred in Tymaria.<br />

Gryphon, seeking to gain some form of Yardistani independence movement, followed the advice of Erik and threatened the Tymarian government with a [[Spam Cannon]]. Despite the fact that no such weapon was at Gryphon's disposal, the Tymarian government decided to pay attention for once. Gryphon, as well as Erik, was almost expelled from Tymaria, but after several half-hearted apologies from both sides, it was generally agreed that the whole thing was a big misunderstanding. He did, however, get away with all of Shireroth under the Yardistani flag, and was singularly in charge over a large [[Anarchy]] (not counting Tymaria, of course). From that point forward, Gryphon began to be a player in the Micronational world.<br />

After leaving Tymaria, when Shireroth regained its sovereignty from Yardistan, Gryphon was proclaimed the first Duke of Yardistan. He launched several smaller rebellions, though most of them never took off.<br />

He has spent time in the ministries as the [[Minister of Technology]], The [[Minister of Immigration]] and the [[Minister of Immigration and Naturalization]] (which he reunited), and as the [[Minister of Research and Education]]. He created the basis for the Immigration system Shireroth uses today, and founded both the [[Tony Au Memorial Library]] and the [[University]]. He has also been [[Steward]], and created the well-known [[Oustfest]] during that Reign. He has also served as [[Kaiser Wylþeow I]], of the [[du Grifos]] line. Most recently, he has served as an [[Imperial Advisor]] to the Kaiser. Gryphon also ran for [[Prætor]] once, but lost.<br />

Both are constructed languages of his own devising, designed originally outside the context of Micronations for his own entertainment. ==Political Views and Critics==<br />

Though in his early days he had fun creating mischief, Gryphon became perhaps one the most conservative minds in Shireroth. He believed in keeping up with tradition and trying to preserve the old ways that were around when he immigrated. He was (and still is) against [[democracy]] in Shireroth, and believed that average citizens (non-nobles) have no place in the Imperial Government. According to him, lawmaking ought to be reserved to the nobles, those who have earned the privilege. He also felt that micronational economies are a waste of energy, looked down on role-playing in serious situations, and opposed [[political parties]]. He is generally an [[Isolationism|isolationist]], and does not look well on dual citizenships, going so far as to write an essay arguing against their being allowed.<br />

He has been highly criticized over the years. Many argued that his policies made it difficult for new citizens to become involved, which was something he had fought against in his early days though nobody cared to call him on it or to remember. Many also claimed that he was probably trying to protect the power of his friends and of himself, especially since most of his positions, his close ties with Erik, and his long tenure had allowed him to have a great voice in the nation. Yardistani is in some ways difficult to pronounce. There are a number of consonant sounds that occur in the language that sound very similar and that do not occur in the English language (including retroflex and palatal fricatives). [[Philip Locke]], a well known and vocal [[political reform]]ist, began rallying for sweeping changes in Shireroth. He managed to get the help and support of many individuals, most notably the [[Duke]] of [[Brookshire]], [[Rakesh Ackbar]]. With the help of his allies, he began to push pro-[[democracy]] legislation in the [[Landsraad]]. He was a vocal advocate of rights and liberties for the Shirerothian people, though the citizens of Shireroth had traditionally been denied and sort of rights.<br />

Conservative members of the government resisted, especially [[Erik Metzler]] and [[Gryphon Avocatio]]. Debates became commonplace as activity increased to higher and higher levels. Then, in a stunning move, [[Scott Alexander]] abdicated the throne of [[Hyperborea]] to become [[Kaiser Los II]], leaving long-time Hyperborean citizen Philip Locke as his heir. This gave Locke direct access to the [[Landsraad]]. The Landsraad was suddenly filled with [[Landsraad bills|bills]]. There were so many that most [[Nobles]] became overwhelmed. During the time period in which most nations see their biggest lulls in activity, Shireroth was breaking posting records day after day on their message board.<br />

== The Act ==<br />
Locke's strategy seemed to be to divide the nation into two camps, the Liberals and the [[Old Boys Club]]. The Liberals were the good guys, according to him, who came to liberate the oppressed citizens of Shireroth and give them the freedoms they deserved. He argued that the OBC was merely trying to keep the power between a certain select few and make it fun for only them while they squashed anybody who spoke out against them.<br />

This polarization had a great effect on Shirerothian politics. Legislation from one side was almost always countered by legislation from the other. Few people stood as neutral. Locke was also known for being a hot-head who was not above making personal attacks against his opponents.<br />

== The Fall ==<br />
During the reign of [[Kaiser Raynor XI]], [[James Raine]], a citizen of Brookshire, became unhappy with Duke Rakesh's views and launched [[Brookshire Rebellion|Brookshire's first-ever rebellion]] to have him removed. In his place he suggested that the more conservative [[Alexandra Decens]] (who was also the wife of the current Kaiser) be instated as duke. The Kaiser, being an opponent of the reformist movement, supported the rebellion and vowed that if they could receive a good amount of support he would allow for the ousting or Rakesh. However, his impatience came to a head and he removed Rakesh and proclaimed Alexandra Duke.<br />

Both sides of the conflict were astonished. The Kaiser tried to correct his move, but the correction was generally regarded as symbolic and not of real substance. Rakesh was given a [[Barony]] and Alex was removed as Duke. From that point forward, though, Rakesh was no longer a real player in Shirerothian politics, and became inactive after having been basically cheated out of his position.<br />

Without his closest ally, and feeling more oppressed and wronged than ever, Locke began to fade out of the spotlight. Activity soon returned to normal levels, but the face of Shirerothian Politics had been significantly changed. As a further result, many once active citizens, burned out by the extreme conflict and activity of the time period began to fade out of the nation.<br />

== The Beginning of Yardistan ==<br />
Since it's creation by [[Erik Metzler]] and [[Stjepan Aracic]], it has been a place of general insanity and political instability. It was first noted as an official body on 11 April, 2001, when the [[Hegemony of Alexandros]] annexed it. Prior to that, it was simply Erik running around and taking stuff from the former [[Flying Islands of Jasonia]].<br />
Stjepan came to visit, and when Erik asked him if he had anything to donate, Stjepan gave up several square inches of his back yard. Accordingly, the territory became known as "Yardistan", and Stjepan was appointed as its governor. As he was co-founder of [[Istvanistan]], his influence caused pieces of it's more unusual culture to be absorbed. Meanwhile, the famous [[Yardistani Annexation Corps]] was created by Erik, and under its name began stealing things in the name of the newly created territory.<br />

Stjepan became less active over time. A newer micronationalist called [[Gryphon Avocatio|Nick the Yardistani]], who had recently been annexed by the YAC, became active in Alexandros and saw the empty territory in which he resided as an opportunity to find his way in his new hobby. He asked [[Kaiser Metzler I]] for permission to control the territory, and it was granted, assuming that Stjepan would still be the owner.<br />

Under Nick's rule, the area quickly became a controlled anarchy. As there was no formal law in Yardistan, he was considered to be the [[Anarch]] of Yardistan. Yardistan's culture began to develop in this period, in spite of the fact that it had on average one citizen.<br />

This state did not last long, and Erik soon seized power back from Nick and returned Shireroth to its rightful place.<br />
