Confessions

Some of you were here back in 2006 and 2007, when we had our big slump. You know what it was like. For those of you who weren't, it was two long years of no one posting and nothing happening. At the same time, the remaining Shirerithians insisted things were fine, the problem would solve itself, and nothing needed to change. I've always been a little bitter, hateful, and aloof, but the slump made me moreso.

Eventually I grew sick of the whole thing and tried to kill the country off. I almost succeeded. And in a way, I'm glad I tried, because it led to Erik coming back and putting it back on its feet. In another way, I wish I hadn't given up hope that easily. Whatever. The nation was miraculously reborn, Erik fixed the political problems, Ari fixed the technological problems, and a bunch of people from other countries I'd never even heard of gave us a new citizen base.

So here I was, disillusioned, embarrassed, and sort of unpopular over the whole attempt-to-kill-off-Shireroth thing. And the country's leadership told me pretty plainly they thought it would be a good idea if I didn't rejoin, because I'd only get in the way of the exciting new young blood who were going to bring Shireroth to greater heights than my generation ever did. And for a while, I planned to listen to them.

But eventually the pressure to come back became too great. As a lot of people observed, you can't just quit micronationalism. But I didn't want to show my face in a nation where I wasn't wanted, and I didn't want to discourage the whole "let's build a new Shireroth free from the ways of the past" atmosphere. And I didn't want to be judged as Scott of Hyperborea, the guy who's been here forever and is practically a piece of furniture, and who has to be treated with respect whether he deserves it or not. If I was going to relate to all the new people, I wanted to do it on an equal playing field, and I wanted to do it without everyone pigeonholing me as the bitter old man whose spirit was crushed by the slump era.

So I joined up under a fake name. Sock puppet, paper doll, call it what you will. I didn't break any laws; I did the whole thing honorably. I filled out the citizenship form with truthful information, and my Scott of Hyperborea account remained a non-citizen. I used all the old SHINE tricks to cover my tracks, and I got in without a hitch. From there on, it was loads of fun. I lived the carefree, high-rolling life of a micronational newbie, who cared about stuff and had positions on issues and did work and got emotional and all that stuff I haven't done in years.

Well, a week or two ago, I got accepted to medical school. I'll be leaving for Ireland in a week to go study at University College Cork. I want to make a lot of lifestyle changes to focus on study, and one of those is spending less time at Shireroth. Scott of Hyperborea isn't a problem, but my other account took lots of time and emotional energy, and I'm afraid now he's unsustainable. Even though I really like him. Even though, through him, I got a chance to have close relationships with a lot of you whom Scott never really got to talk to, and even though he gave me an opportunity to be a part of Shirerithian life in a way I haven't experienced since the old days.

*Scott takes out a locked jewel box, opens it, and pockets the note inside*

And that's why Yvain Wintersong sailed away so suddenly. I feel bad for leaving Brookshire high and dry, but I'm very happy with the little I was able to do in my time there, and I'm very confident Krasniy will be able to continue and improve upon my work there.

If any of you feel tricked or angry, well, my intent was not to embarass you, and I can only say I'm sorry.

I'm going to re-immigrate this week. I think I will join the Duchy of Straylight if they will have me. Hesam's well-established as Count of Hyperborea, Elwynn's boring without any Baronies, and although high fantasy has its good points, after all that time in Brookshire I'm ready for something different. I probably won't be around that often anyway, because of the med school. If I am, kick me.

I'd like to thank Benkern and Andreas for the help and support they gave Yvain. No, he didn't need it, but he had to pretend to need it to look believable, and you were there to give it to him. I am sure that real newbies will be very grateful to have people like you around, as are all Shirerithians. Some other people like Hypatia's Mom, Ari, Krasniy, and Mike Fors also proved their extreme niftiness. And there were a few of you who knew and didn't let on. I'm not going to name you in case you don't want to be named, but thank you. You made my year much more interesting.

Anyway, Yvain will keep his promise to return to congratulate the Goldshirerithians when they get their own Duchy. Until then, I'm afraid you guys are stuck with plain old me :)

Well, that explains why Yvain could write so well. :fish And from someone whose alter egos once ran into the dozens, you get no scolding from this quarter!

Edit: I can't believe it. Honestly. I hope Harald won't mind me posting this chat log.
[01:55] haraldthorstein: BTW do you know why Yvain Wintersong left Shireroth so suddenly?
[01:56] Vilhelm vB: No I don't. Though I have a theory. I believe he was a papel of Scott's. Scott is soon off to Cork University and will have far less time on his hands. The timing makes sense.
[01:56] Vilhelm vB: Also, I was always surprised by the speed at which Scott and Yvain got on. They immediately began working together on the treasure hunt for example.
[01:57] Vilhelm vB: That "Overcoming Bias" site I have always associated with Scott, and Yvain kept going on about it. Though to be fair Ari does a bit too.
[01:57] Vilhelm vB: Finally, the whole mapping thing. Scott has been working on nice-looking maps for ages. Yvain has been doing the same.
[01:58] Vilhelm vB: It's a wild and unlikely theory, but I like to think that Scott is doing stuff like this. It makes me believe SHINE is still active. :)
[02:01] Vilhelm vB: Btw, I have theories like this on everyone. I have a suspicion that you are Carol. ;) j/k

Benkern, you just made yourself 5 erb!

Kaiser, I recommend Benkern for a SHINE position.

My success as a papel worries me. If I can do it, so can any halfway competent foreigner. A foreigner who could reach a Duke level position could do some real damage. I like to think that I would have been able to foil an infiltration attempt like this, but I can't be sure and in any case you can't count on me forever. Benkern is obviously good at this kind of thing and could be an asset.

He's the Grand Vizier of Babkha, which is kinda bad, but Babkha's an ally and Hesam had access all through his Kaisership. I think he would make an excellent addition to the organization.

- I'm not really Count of Hyperborea. At all. I haven't been for a month.

- SHINE is completely dead so there is nothing for BENKERN TO join. In fact, for most of it's existence, SHINE was just another way of saying "Scott"

- Scott, I have a serious question. How is it that you are able to afford a trip around the world with about 200 destinations followed by medical school?

Actually you are still Earl of Hyperborea (there was a flippant remark about sacking you - but no decree, decrees are what matters), you just happen to own the company that controls Bjorngard on behalf of the Duke.

Bjorngard doesn't exist anymore.

Btw, I just realized, since Scott is Yvain, does this mean there will be no more screaming posts about inflation? Because it would really be nice to add some erb to the account system.

Eh, the Kaiser can do that at anytime he wants to... And the Landsraad...

Scott isn't a citizen - and has no other citizenships elsewhere so it really doesn't matter. Papelism for narrative is fine, narrative for revenue generation is unacceptable.

Unless I have made a decree to the contrary it is still Bjorngard. I'll expect 10 erb from yourself by tomorrow to legitimate the name change.

Yes, but the point was that "Yvain" opposed increasing the amount of currency at every turn.

Did "Yvain" have some kind of veto?

Re: Confessions

by Hesam Jayatar
No, but Andreas and I never petitioned the Kaiser to increase the amount of erb because Scott's portrayal of Yvain made it seem as though he would be so angry he'd spontaneously atomize if we increased the amount of erb.

Hesam:

1. Legally you're still Earl of Hyperborea; your lack of activity there doesn't differentiate you from all the other counts who are inactive in their counties.

2. I want him in SEP, that's all. SHINE is an organization that only exists as much as necessary. We haven't been having trouble lately, so SHINE hasn't gone into active mode. If we do have trouble, having someone like Benkern in a position to analyze and react to it would be invaluable.

3. I saved up money from a few years teaching in Japan, and now I'm taking out federal loans and getting some loans from my parents.

4. I honestly believe inflation is a very bad idea. Now that I'm not planning on participating much in the economy, I guess it's no longer personally my business what happens there. And I guess Yvain was the only one doing a lot of person-to-person business anyway. But yeah, inflation will prevent anyone who understands economics from ever engaging in person to person business again unless they're so patriotic they want to do it at a loss. If you really don't understand why that is, I can try to explain it to you, but you seem smart enough that you should know the economics involved. You might be able to solve this by inflating everyone equally (that is, go from 5000e to 10000e not just by giving the crown 5000e extra, but by doubling the amount of erb in every account) but it would hardly be an elegant solution, and wouldn't fix anything.

I like it better this way:
I want him in SEP, that's all. SCOTT is an individual that only exists as much as necessary. We haven't been having trouble lately, so SCOTT hasn't gone into active mode.
Good luck at medical school, I never really pictured you as an MD but congratulations!

As for the economy, inflation is NOT always a bad thing. Controlled inflation can improve the economy. What you're doing is comparing macronational inflation in a practical sense to an economic simulator I invented while drunk. I really don't think the two are related beyond concept.

Well played.

But... I would point out how we react to this vs. how we reacted to Jess when he tried (and failed) to make a new life for himself. Complements instead of condemnation.

Hey Erik, I think you're right that we treated this situation differently, but unlike Jess who was caught, Scott wanted to reveal his scheme and awe us.

And if we had caught him in the first few days of his attempt? What is Jess had been more skilled, and pulled it off, the confessed months later?

1. He did it well.
2. He was not a citizen at the time.

Well like the old saying goes "It's not bad to commit the crime, it's bad to get caught"

And don't get me wrong, I'm all for calling Scott on this bullshit. But I've met my quota of character assassinations for this month.

And if Scott was caught at the time he'd deserve to have his arse kicked. If Jess confessed to running two citizenships under false pretences at a later date he'd deserve to have his arse kicked.

How? I only have ONE citizenship. The only papels I use are "Executive Engineer" and "Peachy Carnehan" for the exclusive purpose of story writing.
