Icebreaker and three of his Finnish friends are on a cross-country trip and are in San Francisco right now. A number of us are planning to get together on Friday evening on Fishermen's Wharf. I think it would be lovely if as many current and former members came as possible.

I am still trying to line up a restaurant for a large group for a Friday evening. I will post the name and location of the restaurant as soon as I find one that can give us that much room (and not cost an arm and a leg). Please plan to join us if you can. This is Friday, July 18, we're speaking of. The next morning, the group will be leaving the area and moving east. Hope you can make it!!

For anyone who is an interested present or former Bay Area Shirerithian, we will be eating tomorrow (Friday) evening, July 18, at Castagnola's Restaurant, at Fishermen's Wharf, San Francisco. The reservation is for 12-14 for 8 PM, and I have requested a window view of the bay. The restaurant is located on the Wharf at 286 Jefferson Street at Jones. There is validated parking for patrons. I'll be there in spirit. Triple-distilled spirit, that is. Knock back some Stolichnaya vodka and manifest me by transubstantiation. It works, I promise.

That's because what you know as Stolichnya is actually just kerosine and rubbing alcohol mixed together in a waste bin and sold by the ladle. Honestly, How could you not notice? The label is written in pen!

Icebreaker, I will be back in Orange County on July 23rd, so tell me if you're going to be in the area then.

What's cruel is suggesting Finns drink Stoli. If this hobby has taught me anything about Finns, you'd be better to offer grain alcohol and ammonium chloride.

I think I'll let them attend to their own drinking requirements. I'm sure they can manage, and I don't offer hard spirits, nor can I afford to buy everyone a round.

I sort of meant it light heartedly, I know how stressful hosting can be.

To all Shirerithians: I would like to report a great time was had by all of us tonight (Friday) at Fishermen's Wharf in San Francisco. In all, 12 people attended: Erik, who had spent much of the day kayaking in the hot sun, but came anyway, Icebreaker and three of his friends from Finland, who are leaving the Bay Area in the morning; Gryphon the Pure, former Dutch of Kildare; myself; my husband; Hypatia Agnesi and her new husband; and Hypatia's brother and his new wife, Pandora, late of Alexandretta, We had a time of fellowship, of trying out new foods, Finnish words and expressions, and talking about the drive ahead of the group. Somehow, a road trip taking up the hottest part of the summer, clear across our country, seems very brave, but they wish to see many of the really important places in our country. Hypatia's husband Mike took pictures which I will post when I get them. We ate at a lovely restaurant overlooking the fishing boats in the bay, and the guys tried our local Dungeness crab and avocadoes, and sourdough bread. I'm sure they have never had anything quite like them.

Anyway, I am sorry more people didn't come, but I couldn't reach a lot of people in time. We are hoping that some of the inactive Shirerithians who attended will return to us. Thanks, everyone, for your kind wishes for this evening.

Ahh, so that's the *real* reason I didn't come. I didn't know it at the time, but it was that I don't want to die .

I wish air freight wasn't prohibitively expensive, I could live off of the three foods you listed without change. The only decent avocadoes in the city are the organic ones grown in the greenhouse farms, we get Alaskan king crab, but its shipped frozen, and our sourdough is generally garbage, except for a polish bakery I know of that does it rather well. All Ontario produces of any real note is "Ice Wine" and the usual hearty produce (lettuce, apples, tomatoes, corn, pears etc..).

The worst of it is, with fuel prices, it looks like imported foods are going to skyrocket in price. I'm not looking forward to the day where I'm describing an orange to my grandchildren.

Hm, they should stop by the Philadelphia area (if they make it that far) and give me and Liam a call.

Sorry to disappoint you, but I didn't hear him raise his voice once, not on the telephone, nor at dinner for 3 hours. All the guys from Finland were very well behaved, and we enjoyed meeting them immensely. Last night they were having a discussion about the best way to arrive in Las Vegas by the 20th. One wanted to see Los Angeles, and a couple wanted to check out Yosemite. I think they will enjoy the trip better with majestic scenery, and they can drive right on through to Nevada. But time will tell what they chose.

All I can say is that all the young men were gentlemen in their behavior last night. I can't account for online antics. (Perhaps he doesn't want to have anyone think well of him.)

This afternoon I spoke with the person who took pictures at the dinner and found out that none of the pictures is worthy of posting. I apologize for not being able to keep my word to all of you.

Now that I have a decent internet connection, I'd like to thank Hypatia's Mom, Erik and everyone else that showed up for an excellent meal. It was good conversation, good food, and good advice, so thanks muchly. A good time was had by all. (:

Too bad about the pictures though, are you sure we can't crop them into something decent or something? =P

D'oh... there goes the chance to test my all-Shirerithians-look-essentially-the-same hypothesis...

I spoke with Hypatias's husband Mike, and he assured me the pictures looked dreadful, and he was ashamed to even have taken them. He is not willing to relinquish them. I am sorry.

And I'm afraid you will have to imagine what people look like uintil I can find a way around this problem. All twelve of us were primarily of northern European extraction this time, if that helps, ranging in age from early 20's to ??

I am insistent that I get those photos. I don't care about someone's pride. No one expects much from a camera phone. I will not take no for an option... MY IMAGE SHALL NOT BE HELD PRISONER!
It's not his place to deny us! And other random statements showing I'm serious about wanting those pictures no matter what. Photoshop/GIMP can clean up photo's beautifully.
