I realize this is totally unrelated to Shireroth, but I thought it might interest you. I don't know if many of you have heard about the huge waves in Hawaii. But there is a spot in Northern California due west of my house that has waves to rival any in the world. It's called Maverick's, and the waves can break up to 50 feet high or more. The surfing competition is starting tomorrow (Saturday) morning, live-streamed on the Maverick's Surf page: http://www.mavsurfer.com/main_page/ , and you can watch the event on a live broadcast from AT&T Park, Myspace and the Mavs Cam. The best surfers from around the world are invited to come in from all over, on an invitation-only basis. They have from 24-48 hours to arrive. The waves only break during and after California's huge Alaska-based winter storm systems, and are focused at this one point on the coast, about 1/2 mile off-shore. Yes, people have died here, but it is an incredible sight, watched by upwards of 100,000 people each year from the bluffs. It's on the local news and talk shows, and makes all the sports magazines.

I liken surfing Maverick's to jumping out of a perfectly good airplane without a parachute. I just thought you might like an insight on one of the more unusual features of our unusual state.
