As a result of much boredom, the Definitive Micronational Index 2.0 is coming into its beta phase. Feature requests and ideas are welcome, plus adding things to the database would be nice.

CHECK IT OUT!

Also, anyone willing to be an editor, moderator, or just someone who puts nation entries into the database let me know and I'll give you the keys to the castle.

Awesome! Looking good. :thumbsup

Good to see the Dinarchy up there, didn't know it was still a micronation sinces its site went down.

Being the dirty little micronational science whore that I am I'd like to know how you define activity...

Also it might interest you to see this.

23:59 < dr-spangle> *notices*
23:59 < dr-spangle> *loads*
23:59 < dr-spangle> :(
23:59 < dr-spangle> no doubt his will beat mine though
00:01 < dr-spangle> mine has more features, more effort, more nations, less effort from users but he has MNN behind him probably
00:02 < dr-spangle> If he adds activity logs or something though I'm personally going to find and shoot him.
00:03 < dr-spangle> because I'm annoyed with people who moan at me for copyright abuse.
00:04 * ari nods
00:05 <@ari> How old were you again?
00:05 < dr-spangle> 15 :(
00:06 <@ari> I was wondering about that since you're sounding a lot like a bitter old man...
00:06 < dr-spangle> I only do that when the people who act like bitter old men to me annoy me
00:07 < dr-spangle> Not calling you a bitter old man, more foghorn :P
00:09 < dr-spangle> OMG, i looked at his HTML
00:09 < dr-spangle> <br> tags, all in one line, no doctype, <html>, <head>, <title>, <body>, etc
00:10 * ari nods
00:10 < dr-spangle> neither do i yet, because i want to build a stylesheet before styling anything
00:11 * ari considers publishing this discussion on that thread :p
00:11 < dr-spangle> but i have <br /> tags
00:11 <@ari> I won't do it without an OK from you, though... I'd prefer that you feel you can mouth off to me freely :)
00:12 < dr-spangle> I'm unsure, I know that foghorn will get angry at me, then Liam, and lachlan and then they'll say i copied him despite mine being posted long before, they'll claim time is cyclic or something
00:14 < dr-spangle> despite how often i get into arguments with them i really don't like to
00:24 < dr-spangle> post the convo if you like

I knew someone was doing this, I just didn't know who, and people asked me to.

We don't have to be competitors, we can join forces! Together, we can rule the world! :document

Oh, and PHP scripts don't usually like to make themselves look pretty as source. But my PHP source is beautiful.

Good idea, though I feel that surely having fields such as active population in the index will require constant updating. Unless you've a really dedicated team of people constantly working on it, that will require a lot of work and updating.

It always is a pain to be constantly updating, but if two or three people volunteering to do it, it isn't so bad. Plus, the backend is so beautiful that updating is a breeze!

Is Babkha that much bigger than we are? I went there a few days ago and they didn't seem so active.

Well, each micronation tends to have its own standards on who's allowed to be a citizen.. for instance, we mostly kicked out everyone who wasn't currently active in the latest rebirth, so our citizenry consists largely of active people. The Babkhan citizen list contains a whole bunch of people who haven't been active in there for a good while. There are even some in there who were historically more significantly Shirithian than Babkhan citizens but who aren't in our list of citizens... I can see at least Jessica (Jadie Alaleh there, several Jadie-based names here) and Ryan (Amir Shervanis there, usually WarVoid here)...

Our citizen list currently lists only two people (Amaris and Spangle) who don't really seem to have much interest in being Shirithian (Amaris because she looked at us and probably decided she wasn't interested, Spangle because he's afraid of benkern and has too many citizenships anyway)... and only one person beside those who's inactive, Andreas - and that's only because he's on a LOA. Other than that, our list of active citizens is remarkably accurate.

Basically, number of citizens is not a terribly accurate metric of activity. Some claim posts per day isn't, either, but at least in Shireroth, the only thread that's producing a lot of meaningless posts here is word association... maybe other nations' PPDs are inflated, but ours isn't :p

There really isn't a good marker for how active a nation is, so I'm going to be dropping that from the new index. I think it's (a) impossible to display, to everyone's satisfaction, an objective marker of activity, and (b) a pain to keep updated.

Features coming soon:
- Links to forums (all, past and present)
- Treaty web (see who has what with who)
- Location (MCS? GSO? ETC?)
- Relevant news sources for each country

and much more!

We're not fantasy?

Our predecessor was an empire that died opening a dimensional gate and summoning a demon. And you have some kind of magic sword. And there are elves in Froyalan. And our official religion involves a scary talking tree. And everything's named after World of Warcraft. And the background reminds me of either druids or elves. And our cities have names like "Dracoheim" and "Demonsfall" and "Cimmeria" and "Hyperborea". And someone who joined just after I did said he was half-bear, half-cyborg.

How could we be any more fantasy?

We're also a feudal governmental simulation... we have acts and laws and a Landsraad and a Kaiser. Fantasy implies roleplay, which we are only to a certain extent.

To be honest, I'm pretty sure we're far into the Roleplay spectrum by now in Shireroth's history. Before I learnt anything about the nation, I was really convinced that this place was simply a role-playing nation, simply because of the Tolkien-esque culture Shireroth traditionally seems to have and its cities' names being remniscent of World of Warcraft and other RPGs.

I think it's not wrong to call Shireroth fantasy... but it *is* wrong to call Antica serious, Babkha a simulation, and Shireroth fantasy. I don't think we're really different enough to justify using names that imply that much difference...

Sorry, I'm a little confused :confused
I think it's not wrong to call Shireroth fantasy
and then...
but it *is* wrong to call
+
Shireroth fantasy
Or am I missing something?

Ari is saying that the difference between Shireroth and the other nations isn't big enough as that they should be categorised differently - he's not nitpicking the categories chosen, per se. Maybe this rewording will help:
I think it's not wrong to call Shireroth fantasy... but it *is* wrong to call Antica category 1, Babkha category 2, and Shireroth category 3.
Or, better yet:
Shireroth is fantasy, but so are Antica and Babkha.
(Roughly.)

Does that help? :)

Aaaah... I see. Thank you extremely.

It's official. Finns and Germans understand the rudiments of my own language better than I do! :D

*chuckles*

Perhaps the 'problem' with the types could be alleviated by making it a SET rather than an ENUM type. So you could make, say, Antica, "fantasy, serious", and Babkha "fantasy, simulation". Which sounds really dumb, but maybe if the names were chosen a bit differently, it might work out. Note, this suggestion is coming from an utter rookie, so feel free to dismiss it as hogwash. ^_~

BTW, I noticed the sort.php doesn't call the DMI beta. ;) May I suggest an include() for the introductory text?

Oh, and, damn you for tempting me to add Dark Arcadia, then stalling at the description.

Several times.

:P

Shireroth is not officially fantasy.. we are officially simulation, but just like to goof off when we are bored.. in fact.. I think we have laws against being called fantasy... somewhere...

Here's a riddle originally attributed to Abraham Lincoln:
Q: If you call a tail a leg, how many legs does a dog have?
A: Four. A tail's not a leg, no matter what you call it.

Given x = 2, what is 2x?
2x. x is still x, no matter what you call it.

Cheers, you just made my non-calculator maths exam! :thumbsup

On the one hand it's true that despite the law we've been heavy on fantasy lately... on the other hand this really isn't how it always was, and how it will always be. Right now all of the Dukes have been chosen mostly for their loyalty to Shireroth during hard times, and there hasn't really been any significant disagreement in the Landsraad. If things change (for whatever reason - maybe a Duke gets run over by a bus, maybe the Anticans get off their asses and form a Duchy, etc.) and we get more progressive Dukes, the nation's focus might suddenly shift toward the Landsraad...

I like Absurdist Simulation...

Maybe I ought to go back to being a hardass again.... though everyone will hate me if I do that.... funny how that worked.... We all had our roles...
