My point was that the Star Destroyer has huge tower things that make shields that are BIGGER than an X-Wing...while the X-Wing has a dinky generator and will get wasted with a dead-on capital shot anyway. Pilot of the Prototype Einhänder Mk I

Point taken... I don't like SD-style shields anyway... the generators are too vulnerable and the shield strength is uneven. Better to have smaller generators scattered all over the ship, inside (but near the exterior of) the hull. SD generators might not be particularly vulnerable to, say, getting pegged off by a stray shot, but you'd be surprised how effective a kamikaze (or drone) starfighter can be at taking them out through ramming.
