Death from the Sky

In the Barony of Amity and Mirioth, elves are a protected species. No elf pits, perverted sexual practices or anything like that. One hundred percent safe. So instead the entire population, man and elf, is in tranquil harmony with nature. At ease with themselves and with each other they watch blissfully as the island of Solaria floated along in the sky travelling along towards Lunaris and the northern horizon. Truely it was a sight of rare beauty to see an ancient flying island on the move.Had they been more attentive the inhabitants of the island of Amity would have seen a hundred vapour trails raise up from the surface of Solaria, arching gracefully through the skies towards where they were standing. There was no warning only the supersonic boom of the incoming missiles, but by the time that the sound had registered, the warheads were already impacting on the defenceless soil of Amity. At first it appeared that the rockets had fallen at random. Few were killed save in one village where a scud had fallen on a crowded tavern killing all the diners therein. But gradually, people who had been knocked flat to the ground by the air pressure of the multiple impacts picked themselves up again, the horrible truth dawned and carried on the wind was seen the yellowish cloud imminent death. Observers saw a plume of black, then yellowish smoke, followed by a not-unpleasant odor similar to fertilizer, and also a smell like rotten garlic. Shortly afterwards, the elves began to have trouble breathing, their eyes watered, their skin blistered, and many vomited--some of whom died. All of these symptoms are consistent with a poison gas attack. The skin of victims of mustard gas blistered, the eyes became very sore and they began to vomit. The Mustard gas caused internal and external bleeding and attacked the bronchial tubes, stripping off the mucous membrane. There was panic amongst the population as this airborne tide of death rolled into their local communities. Thousands began a stampede towards the waters hoping to escape grisly death. Untold numbers however were caught out. Some shrewd persons survived through a singularly unpleasant method. Urinating on their hankerchiefs and then holding them to their mouths, they avoided breathing the deadly gas. However in spite of this their skin was still horribly blistered and began to peel away in chunks. Never in history had such a crime been recorded.Baronial officials, donning gas masks and protective suits, did their best. Going out into the targeted areas gas their tests on chromatography and mass spectrometry found that six soil samples taken from the first two craters they came across contained mustard agent and/or thiodiglycol, a compound produced by the hydrolysis (breakdown by water) of mustard, 1,4- thioxane and 1,4-dithiane, were also detected in these samples. No offical estimates are available at the present time but reports indicate at least the attack killed an estimated 5,000 of the island's inhabitants. The toll might rise. And the flying island of Solaria sailed blithly on.
