I know this is done and dusted and (because this is Shireroth) probably caused a few people to leave, but I was away for that so I don't care. what was wrong with those beautiful banners of Ryan's? Well, I'm not going to read the long debates, since half of them are pointless, and/or just have people trying to get Beckford to shut the hell up about stuff he has no conception of (replace Beckford with any willing amhadán). And I'm off to Dublin Airport in about half an hour, so toodles. Ah, this is a good chance to deepen my philosophy of aesthetics a bit... although... this post is pretty weird... and probably inconsistent or just stupid at places...The Shirerothian forums are like a textbook case of horrible visual design. The contrast between the cyan text and the two different sorts of blue backgrounds is so small that it's a serious impediment if you don't happen to be reading the forums in a perfect environment (no backlights, a monitor with well-tuned settings, etc.). The background is full of noise and bright colours, and it tiles quite noticeably several times over. Some of the pieces of text that are placed on the background picture are partly unreadable. The flag... well, let's not go there too deep. All I will say is that of the flags on our forums the only one that I consider to be succesful and even close to being beautiful is Hyperborea's. Note that one of the things I didn't like about the current background we have is noise. With "noise", I mean how distracting some image or piece of a design is. There's a simple way to tell if any specific design is noisy; A thing is noisy if you look at it. You either do not look or are not aware of looking at things that are not noisy. Some noisy things (most of them if your design is any good) are relevant, of course, but some, like backgrounds and banners, aren't. I'm quite used to the current design of the forums of Shireroth. I've seen the evil elf and the flag so many times that I normally don't even look at them anymore - or if I do, I don't see them. Therefore, they aren't very noisy to me anymore. If the background was changed and/or the flag replaced with something new, this new design would obviously be more noisy. And in case the new design is noisy per se (such as banners which combine several pictures into one), it would be even worse.Every detail that does not stand for a relevant piece of is noise. Human nature demands that there's a certain amount of background noise present everywhere you are. How much noise you prefer is your personal choice and trait... to tell the truth, I can't live without a lot of noise. But I'm picky about where I want my noise. I don't want it layered on top of my communication mediums, such as WWW forums. I don't want noise in Shireroth. Change, especially towards a design that is noisy by itself, causes a huge amount of distraction from whatever's currently relevant. That's why it is, IMVHO, bad.Quote:amhadánMike Oldfield is God. I personally like the way the board looks. I never had a problem with background noise...and I think that we should just leave it...it seems that that is the will of the people...thus it should be left alone. -Gryphon Avocatio- Anarch and Duke of all Yardistan - Minister of Imigration and Naturalisation, Shireroth - Shirerothian Elder - "Minsiter of Dance, Pants and Funny Walks" - SAVE THE KIWI!! I couldn't care any less if it's actually changed or not, but a country's board (and it's appearance) are critical to national well being. I'm convinced that by giving it a new color scheme and revamping the forum layout we could make this old place appear more youthful and seem more attractive.Locke

Quote:Sentiment among the young ones and Mr. P. Locke is always in contrast with that of the elders. I'm not that surprised.Yeah... me neither.Warning: IMPENDING RANTThis board doesn't need to be pretty, because pretty boards attract spammers and corrupt micronationalists. Also, this board is pretty in its own sentiment. It has been this way ever since I joined the nation, and if it looked any different, especially the board colours, I would be afraid of it turning into another one of those corrupt but economically sound micronations out there. Activity is good and all, but it's better when activity is made mostly by the citizens of the nation, and it's best if most (if not all) of the citizens of the nation like the nation not for its beauty (see: goldshire hills) or for its economy (did dStryker disappear, by the way?) but for its culture, and the unity (or disunity... see: yardistan) of the people. It's best that citizens know what they're doing, and they don't join the nation just because it looks pretty, and they want to make smiley faces everywhere. I mean, think about it. If this place were anything like real life, then eventually the Elders would die, and the nation would be given right into the hands of the newer generation. I think its better that the posterity of this nation love it for its community and governmental layout (see: definition of a micronation) than for the pretty forum colours or whatever.I really don't know where exactly I'm trying to go with this, so I'll just stop here... hope this enlightens someone... at least a little bit *holds up thumb and forefinger together*This has been a special report brought to you by the Rant BroadCast SystemHave a nice day... Well...this is a losing battle. I'm sure it will surface again later, though. I was pushing for Constitutional reform last summer and only now that starting to become a pressing issue, and only because it has been given attention by Nick.I guess Shireroth can progress... Locke.

I've always thought we should do something about the constitution... but not necessarily overhaul. It has some very broad statements contained therein, and it would be nice to add the little tiny points. I think that the constitution, as it is, is no stronger than a Landsraad Bill, and therefore, I think that the Landsraad should be able to change the constitution, especially after I've noticed that half the landsraad bills are adjustments on the constitution nowadays (even if it is indirectly) arr... I am completely incomprehensible right now... never mind me... blech... Okay...a few things. First Phillip:Quote:I couldn't care any less if it's actually changed or not, but a country's board (and it's appearance) are critical to national well being. I'm convinced that by giving it a new color scheme and revamping the forum layout we could make this old place appear more youthful and seem more attractive.First, if you don't care, don't try to argue. Second, i doubt that you can back up the claim that the colours of a micronations board are directly proportional to it's well being, especially considering the age and success of this very nation. As for making the nation seem more "youthful", well, why? Part of what makes Shireroth so interesting is it's age and the culture it has slowly developed over the years. and second:Quote: I was pushing for Constitutional reform last summer and only now that starting to become a pressing issue, and only because it has been given attention by Nick.I'm not pushing for constitutional reform. I'm just trying to reinforce the constitution. Quote:I think that the constitution, as it is, is no stronger than a Landsraad Bill, and therefore, I think that the Landsraad should be able to change the constitution, especially after I've noticed that half the landsraad bills are adjustments on the constitution nowadays (even if it is indirectly)I realised not that long ago that the landsraad is unable to edit the the constitution because the kaiser decrees the constitution. Thus, the constitution is above the Landsraad, but below the Kaiser. The problem is that Imperial Decree #2 states that the Kaiser is below the constitution, which implies that the Kaiser should be unable to change it because he under it. In other words, the Landsraad is powerless to fight this, and the Kaisers merely have to say that they are omnipotent to change it. We have quite quandry to deal with. -Gryphon Avocatio- Anarch and Duke of all Yardistan - Minister of Imigration and Naturalisation, Shireroth - Shirerothian Elder - "Minsiter of Dance, Pants and Funny Walks" - SAVE THE KIWI!!
