WELCOME - ALL INFO REGARDING NEW FORUM IS HERE

Greetings, and welcome! Think of me as the embodiment of the Shirithian Spirit! (Or, think of me as Greg Dean posting through the general forum admin account, trying to get all this set up. Your pick.)

So, I realize switching over to a new forum can be a bit trying. I've done it before, but hopefully, we can make this as painless as possible.

First, let me list the things that still remain to be changed before this is official. I will update this list as I complete said things.
  • Obviously, the theme needs to be modified. As a quick measure to make things suck less, I will be adding a Shireroth logo up in the upper left. This will be temporary, but I want to hold off on making any major modifications until the database is set in stone and backed up.
  • The Malarbor box will be added. I am going to work on a method that allows it to be updated through the forum itself, but I will be putting the base HTML box in as a stopgap.
  • Any archives that can be moved back into the forum they are associated with will be. phpBB has no limit on threads per forum, so many of the archive forums are now obsolete.
  • We'll be pointing the Shireroth domain here, so the link will eventually be http://www.shireroth.org/forum
Now, on the subject of SUBFORUMS. An earlier incarnation of this test forum had them enabled... however, word has been given to me that the release of phpBB version 3 is imminent, and that version will have subforums integrated, rather than a very complex mod. I'm more inclined to wait on them because of this, as the subforum mod initially caused some errors with the conversion script. This way, we can be assured our forums will be compatible with the forum system going forward.

Also in version 3 is a new styles system - my personal opinion is that changing our color scheme is a great idea, but we should wait on actually working on a full-blown style until this is released. It's supposed to be easier to use, and should make things much nicer in the future. Again, this is just my recommendation.

I will be leaving this thread open to posting, such that any concerns can be put here, and I will address them post haste.

If you want an editable-from-the-forum Malarbor, I think I can help. Take a look at this. You click on the title and it opens up the edit screen, from which you can modify the title, text, and picture (the form is messed up because I was never unlazy enough to make it prettier). It's password protected for submission. I helped the GC set one up a while back. Thinking about it, it should be much easier with my now-knowledge, rather than my then-knowledge.

And just as a small note, phpBB 3 has been "imminent" for a long, long time now. There was a time many months back where they said it should be coming along soon... And here we wait. I hope it comes really soon as well, but I'd advise counting on it before making this place look a bit more like home. Perhaps the background can be changed, at least? (if it doesn't look too weird with these colors)

Of course. I just had recent information from a friend of mine who knew some of the people involved. I'll see if I can't nail down the true info, and if it truly is a while off, we can work on a new style.

But for now, at least changing the colors to match can definately be done. I'll get to work on it tomorrow.

(Oh, and that malarbor box thing would be perfect.)

Here's a question - should we disable guest posting?

No. Why?

YOU WOULD SAY THAT. :D

I think we should. It's best that we have people register so we can pin down their identity. IPs don't always work if someone doesn't have a static one.

Actually, they never were restricted in the old forums, either.

Oh, do me a favor, and please allow HTML in signatures.

There are valid security reasons to have it disabled, but perhaps it should be allowed. I believe the administrators can restrict to what HTML tags are allowed. I could make the change myself, but I only have admin right now to take care of a few things, so I'd rather not make anyone angry and do something I wasn't intended to do.

Local accounts were disallowed for quite a long time for security purposes.

Uh, there's the small fact that all accounts are now local. :p

What I meant was that the local accounts were disallowed for similar reasons that we should disallow guesting.

I agree. Dis-allow guesting.
