Considering ShireFox is now the domain of Minfo, I figured it was appropriate.

Their logos are reversed. They call it a signature, but no one ever signs their posts...

Well at least get the old Minfo logo off of MiniInt. After Shirewiki was changed to Microwiki, that symbol bnecame the Minfo symbol. They call it a signature, but no one ever signs their posts...

Alright, alright, so I'm lazy and don't want to find an image just yet! Jesus!

Done. There are no flowers, no not this time. There will be no angels gracing the lines, just these stark words I find.

Nifty. At least someone still keeps up shop around here. They call it a signature, but no one ever signs their posts...

*burp*

If Shirefox is Minfo, then why are it's updates in MiniInt?

Silly fool! Just as one can never know simultaneously both the position and the velocity of a subatomic particle, one can never know why both MiniInfo and MiniInt... er... well, you see what I'm getting at, right?

Position and momentum. :p

In practice, there is no difference, as the mass of the particle can be known to a high degree of accuracy, and the equation "momentum = mass x velocity" shows that the only variable is velocity.

Eat that, Heisenberg!

(Goodness, I'm bored.)

Blue is the color of sanity divided by the quantity of the Kaiser's ability for causing destruction.

It doesn't take an LhD in Lavalonian language to know that!

There's quite a difference. Other than the fact that p = mv is only good for nonrelativistic velocities, (it is actually mv/sqrt(1-v^2/c^2) velocity is not an observable; momentum is. Just like other observables, it is an operator on the wavefunction. (-i*h-bar*grad) Momentum, when known exactly in QM, is equal to h-bar times the wavenumber of the wavefunction - the use of the wavenumber (basically a "frequency" for distance of a wave, you could say, equal to 2*pi divided by the wavelength) is what makes it affected by the Uncertaincy Principle, which is purely related to the nature of waves.

So yes, it does matter. Velocity is defined as the partial derivative of the angular frequency with respect to the wavenumber, quite different than simply being a multiple of momentum.

And, um, by "momentum" here I mean linear momentum.

For a very long time I though Bill posted this sort of stuff in a somewhat pathetic attempt to make himself feel smarter than everyone else. Then I startilingly realized that he's saying it because, in his mind, he must, that it would eat away at him if he didn't, and because he thinks it's important enough to know.

You can still threaten to :knife him anyway. It works pretty well.

*bows humbly before Bill*

Since you're here anyway, there's this college physics assignment that's bugging me ...

:D

In any case, 'tis decided! From now on, I will never contradict Bill about physics. I will reserve my pronouncements for the far more important field of chemistry!
