Valentines day is nothing more than a way for the greeting card industry and the candy makers to force people to be romantic and buy crap that will only be remembered for that one day...it is a total farce.....a greeting-car-fabricated-holiday....so there.. I have no custom signature...oh wait...

I must admit I have no real problem with Valentines day...I know it sometimes pours salt into single people's wounds, but it's also a good excuse for a shy person to ask a gal out. (aka, me hehe)

My problem with it has nothing to do with being single. My problem with it is that it's totally fucking fake.Acts of love should be spontaneous and personal, not the result of marketing. And so we lay,We lay in the same grave,Our chemical wedding day...Edited by: For Her Light at: 2/16/04 7:44 pm

To be fair it's marketing AND tradition.Traditions can be very romantic, like aniverseries. But yeah, I'm no fan either

It's about as traditional as taking a pot shot at an ice cream van, that's how traditional it is.Valentine's Day came about after World War II, when the world had just settled down enough to be concerned with stupid things like that, I can think of a lot better things that were put down while commercialised, hollow Valentine's Day rose up. At least those of us who don't celebrate Valentine's Day have an advantageIt's called "I'm Not an Idiot Day"It takes place one week after Valentine's Day when the price of roses drops back to normal and all the surplus candy is on sale for dirt cheap. And so we lay,We lay in the same grave,Our chemical wedding day...

"Valentine's Day came about after World War II"*blink* umm, Saint Valentine goes back to at least the Middle Ages (France and England) and possibly as far as ancient Rome.

Way farther back then that...When the Emperor of Rome wanted to conquer some more land, his legionaries were against the idea because that meant staying away from their families for a long time. So the Emperor declared that none of them could be married, which ticked a lot of them off.Valentinus, a Christian who became a saint, held underground marriage ceremonies for these people against the Emperor's will. He was eventually discovered, captured, and beheaded on Febuary 14th, 270 A.D.Of course, it also was timed well with a Roman festival on Febuary 15th where all the maidens in a village would put their names in a big pot and the men would draw them out. Those two would then become a couple for a few months to see if things worked out. Thus began the tradition of girls sending messages to the young men that the girls hoped would draw their names out of a hat.Hallmark holiday, indeed.*vanishes back into the history book* Sai'Kar Lum'Eth Tzare mitemar Micras sarom lumsom.

oh please...Whatever case you can make the historic continuancy of the holiday does not in the slightest affect what the holiday is TODAY.And considering that Roman tradition you point out was well-nigh prostitution in actual practice, it's hardly an admirable heritage to begin with. And so we lay,We lay in the same grave,Our chemical wedding day...

My mother works for Hallmark cards. She completely admits that valentines day was nothing until the Hallmark corporation came up with marketing it more than fifty years ago. before that, it was basically ignored as some obscure christian holiday.Mothers' day, Fathers' day, and grandparents' day are also Hallmark's creation...be wary... I don't care what any of you say... I like Valentines day (even if it makes me sad sometimes).Of course, you probably expected me to say that, since it allways seems to end up FHL, Erik, Nick, and sometimes Joseph against myself and Scott; with the rest abstaining...
