Courtesy of the Expo. The Small Commonwealth United Currency works on a simple principle - more people involved in the economy is better. More people means more people interested in buying things or services, and more people willing to sell things.
What sort of things do people sell? See the services list to get some idea (even the services list has become a service that's earned money). And by advertising the list in all the nations involved, people everywhere can know what's around.
The Small Commonwealth has simplified foreign transactions considerably. All the nations use the same currency, on the same bank, so there's no need to work out exchange rates or transfer funds across banks. The treaty which arranges it sets no name for the currency, allowing all nations to choose their own and avoiding that dispute. The bank organises account by nation and region, and citizens can only see the money from their nation, so it feels like a national thing.
That's not the only thing nations can customise. With the money they start with/earn, nations can do whatever they want. Some things, like the services list above, and the current policy of no regular taxation, are across the board. Other types of shops function specifically within certain nations. Gralus, for example, intends to run a number of 'minigames' - self contained fun activities which provide in themself the reason to purchase items from the shop. There's the Gang Wars and Wasteland challenge, the ever popular Manuel's Piracy Competition (which functions as part of the Novatainian RP economy), and even talk of a stock exchange simulator.
In Shireroth, where there is no GROWL they have SCIRA, where you can purchase the right to say you have an army, and use it in civil wars. Shireroth also has a well developed Guild System to encourage coordination in the offering of services.
Nelaga and Natopia have also joined the economy, and though they haven't developed specific extra architecture, still participate actively in the rest of the activities.
Another currently underdeveloped potential of the Small Commonwealth currency is to give small nations the chance to have an economy. Normally, a working economy with under five citizens is impossible to achieve. But united as part of the larger Small Commonwealth economy, smaller nations can have an economy and their own national currency, and still have enough activity for the economy to work.
The Small Commonwealth Economy is an exciting prospect, with so many people involved, and all member nations look froward to seeing how it develops in the future.
