Tempting fate in Malarbor's presence

That's right, I'm changing the forum colours. Well, that is, I changed them, and now I'm looking for your opinion on where to go from here.

Y'see, lately I've been travelling micronationalism... not very widely, but far enough to note that it's fashionable to use colours to signify membership in various groups. Antica, Batavia, Nelaga and Novatainia all use phpBB3's group colours for government positions.

I looked at those forums and figured, hey, that's neat. Not very useful, but it's in the spirit of micronationalism: Government positions are fun! I briefly thought about colouring the Kaiser, Steward, Praetor, the Dukes and the ministers, but then I realised... we've got a perfectly good channel for helping you remember who's got which position here already, and marking the people with high government positions is what everybody else does. Why not one-up the rest of micronationalism and do something they can't reasonably do: I'll mark the people of each duchy with their own colour.

I tried to strike a balance between not turning the forum into a bowl of angry fruit salad and usefully communicating information at a glance. It's a challenge, though... optimally the colours should be distinct enough that you can tell at a glance who's from which duchy, but subtle enough that pages full of posts from people in different duchies don't look silly.

For what it's worth, I like the general effect, but I don't think I have the colours quite right yet. I wouldn't be averse to going back to the original colours altogether: The colours aren't that essential as a source of information, but if they look bad they'll be a very visible problem that won't reflect well on us.

Shirithians, I'd like to hear your input on whether the colours should be toned down, brought back to the way they used to be, tuned up, changed, anything.

Just in general, I'm not a big fan of the duchy colours. I don't mean to insult you, I just personally don't find them attractive. I like the high government positions system better. But I am glad that you're changing the colours, I was thinking about suggesting that. Sorry, Ari. :(

I was aware that there was some sort of color-ranking system going on but didn't see the significance of ranking by duchy. I don't think the matter is helped by your choice of all faded pastel-white colors. Maybe the goal was to make nothing stand out awkwardly on the forum page but, by doing that, you kind of compromised the system.

I like the idea of colour - but I'd suggest clearly distinct ones. Of course, we need a Brookshirithian to post in this thread to compare them all in one place.

Hm, I'll try higher saturations and lower luminances and see if that'll look better... if not, I'll roll the changes back.

The new colours look good. Much more distinct.

I agree, much better colours. But why is the Duke of Kildare (Shyriath) coloured as Straylightian?
