Well, at the very least, he misspelt "Gott". And if the first is indeed valid, which I highly doubt, then it's archaic.

Aber wenn Du willst, kannst Du natürlich gerne mit mir über die deutsche Sprache diskutieren. ^_~ *dich ärgert (ist aber nicht bös' gemeint)*

Again, valid, but I never said it had much of a chance of being used. Maybe by a Ge with a learning disability...

Deutsch kann ich gut verstanden. Doch kann ich deutsch sprechen, aber nicht so gut. Fünf Jahren Gymnasium-Deutsch sind nicht genug...

(that was probably very wrong...)

Mostly correct, actually, well done! :) "Doch" should probably be "Auch", but otherwise, that's really, really good. *tips hat* ^_^

Meh.

Translation (rough): Don't worry, I have a lot of respect for all attempts to master the German language. I think it's great that you know enough German to actually communicate with it - as in, really communicate - and not just be able to say, "Where is the next train station?", "I would like to have a schnitzel", or other trivial and standard phrases.

You know you're probably going to get stoned asking IE-related questions here. Not from me, as I happen to like its dyigacy, but pretty much everyone here is more FireFoxist than B00/\/\ist or the likes... er... *runs far, far away!*

To answer your question, I have no idea. I have a German keyboard, which is really only annoying when I visit the UK and notice, yet again, that y and z have swapped locations - since I'm a touch-typist, this has rather persistant effects. *mutter-grumble*

However, it's perfectly valid to write...
...ä as ae...
...ü as ue...
...ö as oe...
...and ß as ss (even if this last one can occasionally cause ambiguity). :)

ä is alt+0228
ö is alt+0246
ü is alt+0252
Not quite sure about the "ss" letter. I usually use a german keyboard, too (although, this is over top of an american keyboard...)

And I used "doch" as "of course", though that might be where I was wrong...I might have placed into German 311 in college, but that doesn't mean I remember everything. Again, I understand much better than I speak...

Aber ziemlich gut andere Deutschsprächeren zu finden. :)

Never knew Shireroth could help me with German revision! Now all I need are some Russian and Yiddish speakers and I'll be right on track for my foreign languages :thumbsup
...and ß as ss (even if this last one can occasionally cause ambiguity).
Yeah, though I heard that the 'ß' was originally after only a short vowel, hence why you get it in words like 'häßlich'.
Also, the actual way one writes the letter is said to be derived from when the long 'ss' sound was written like this: 'S s' and then mutated through cursive writing into 'ß'.
... and there's your fun fact for the day :)

When you have 4 years of German with the same crazy Bavarian lady, you do pick up those kinds of things.

And I cannot help you with Russian or Yiddish, unfortunately. But if you ever need help with Japanese, Romanian, or Bulgarian, let me know... :thumbsup

"Doch" is less of "of course", and more of "(but) actually". It's closely relatedly to "aber", semantically, and you can use "doch" in many places where you could use "aber", and additionally it functions as a one-word retort to negated yes/no questions, as an unambiguous counter. "Gehst Du heute nicht zum Markt?" - "Doch!" - I expect the one-word-retort is why you consider it to mean 'of course'; perhaps it'll help remembering it as an etymological short-hand for, "Actually, your observation is incorrect."

I suggest "natürlich" for "of course".

And, hey, your German is far, far better than my French. 'nuff said. ^_^
Liam conToketi wrote:Aber ziemlich gut andere Deutchsprächeren zu finden. :)
It's actually quite funny - German may be my mothertongue, but it's harder to type in it than in English. It may have something to do with my general dislike of the language (German), though. Still! If you ever want to talk German, for example to confuzzle (most of) the rest of Shireroth with CODESP33KL0LP\/\/N3D!!!!111111eleven, let me know. ^_~

*after a moment on wikipedia* Hey, cool, I didn't know there was such a thing as a long s ("S"). Though wikipedia claims it's 'Sz' and not 'Ss', which is further supported by the name of the letter, which is "Eszett", which in turn translates to "Eszed"/"Eszee" ("sz"). Though why it's transliterated as "ss", I've no idea.

Anyway, very cool; thanks for sharing.

I've no idea. I do know that after the spelling reform, short-vowel-preceeded 'ß' have mostly been ditched in favour of 'ss', though, and there are certainly long-vowel-preceeded 'ß'... which doesn't really make much sense, IMO. Unfortunately, Wikipedia isn't helpful in the least as to the historic purpose of 'ß' as opposed to 's' and 'ss', other than to mention that it is and/or was used.

I just stick the "ß" (alt+0233, by the way) wherever I would used an "ss"... :D

And yes, that must be where I must have gotten that. It's been a while since I've been to Germany...I need more practice...

Now, where's Prodigy...he speaks German...

Yeah. Maybe we should do a petition to save the Eszett. Itsatisfying to write and just looks cool.
You're probably right about it being a short s then a z- the German name for it says all.
However, that short s was also used in English for a long time, if you look at early nineteenth century prints, it's very common.

And here's another fact- when you say 'ye olde tea shoppe' or something of the kind, the letter 'y' in 'ye' is actually an Anglo-Saxon letter 'wen', pronounced 'th' ;)

My pronunciation is fine. I've been mistaken for a German while in Germany by a German, so I think all that is fine. I just need a nice vocab boost periodically....

Neike--

I know you prefer English though your native language is German, but you might consider offering your services as a tutor for very basic German in the University forum. We have an entire forum thread in Straylight devoted to Finnish, why not German?

Um, gosh. I could try, but I wouldn't know where to start... I'm better at answering questions if they crop up, not at making lessons from scratch...
