Why, David? Everyone knows the only people who call themselves British are the English, as they have nothing to be proud of, and so try to claim the niftiness of the Scots and Welsh for their own. Quote: But... you are British...????? *confused and is completely reasurred that his comment was correct*Yes, he is British, but the term "British" also includes the Scots, and Welsh, so while you recognized the existence of those nations, you left the English subordinated to a state identity rather than as a nation in their own right. It may sound like quibbling, but language is very important with regards to identity. As a reminder, I still expect to see the United Kingdom dismembered in 20 years, and the royal family supplanted by a new Republic of England, free of medieval feudal tyranny. SF-SN

*rolls eyes*My point is proven, but because David is a good friend and I don't wish to offend him, I retract and apoligies. There are no flowers, no not this time. There will be no angels gracing the lines, just these stark words I find.

Re: For you pesky Americans
Somethings the average american simply will not be able to understand, as the american concept of the nation is something totally different from how it exists in most of europe.I mean, I'm sure he wasn't as offended as you might think, but you shouldn't roll your eyes at it. It may look like nitpicking, but these different words have meanings which are greatly affected by how they are contextualized. SF-SNEdited by: Stjepan Veliki at: 9/14/05 20:12

I just had a thought, is that whole thing like the concept down south: "The South shall rise again so don't call me American, i'm confederate" thing? There are no flowers, no not this time. There will be no angels gracing the lines, just these stark words I find.
Re: For you pesky Americans
Never mind those people. The British (yes, the British!) are the most fucked up people in Europe. Well, after the French, the Italians, the Greek, the Swedish, the Norwegians, the Hungarians, the Slovaks, the Serbs and possible even the Portuguese.

If you want, I can give you a lecture going over the construction of modern nationalism in the 19th century, and how in the late 20th century, the politics of identity have developed. SF-SN

I was not really offended...Quote:This is from Merriam-Webster.com. May I point out the second description. So they are British citizens, but dont like being called British?! I have no problem with being called british, except when you call the english "british" and in the same sentence call the scots, "scots" and the welsh, "welsh"....if you are going to refer to the other peoples by their own names, then refer to us by our name as well....if you are going to call the english "british" then call the rest british as well.**especially as the english are the least british of the lot (except hte northern irish)

Re: For you pesky Americans
What really pisses me off is how poorley educated the Americans are about the UK geographically. I've met Americans that think Britain = England, and that Scotland and Wales are cities in England (ohhh that guy really pissed me off : -->:"> ) The fact is that the only English you really see a lot of are mostly on the teevee, and you change the accents of those people so that you can understand what the hell they're saying, take Daphne from Frasier for example. Secondly, you might slag Europe, but remember, most of your ancestors are Spanish, French and even British (that's all 4 parts of it, not just England ¬¬)Uh uh, a question i've never had answered, why do Americans take letters out of perfectly good words? Colour has a U in it ffs!!

We have the best of both worlds. We've got a country full of Irish people, and we don't have the responsibility of governing the insane north-east corner. We leave that to you sasanaigh. Wil Nider to the HyperboreansEoin to the restZirandorthel to the ages

Wasn't your counrty full of Irish people trying to kill each other until recently? We just drink a shit lot and have the best trained fighters if it ever comes to it (the Black Watch, unboubtibly the best army regiment in the world)

Oh well.Quote:The fact is that the only English you really see a lot of are mostly on the teeveeActually, I see more English citizens in real life than on TV, apparently Charlotte (North Carolina) attracts alot of English people on temporary work visas. Depends, the Irish are weak and get drunk very quickly, but if a Scots wants to get drunk all he needs is a botte bong and he could be down in minutes.

It's a little different, as Nebraska is an empty piece of shit that no one in their right mind should care the slightest bit about. He's right, most Americans have an embarassingly poor knowledge of geography (and there are probably plenty of Americans who couldn't point to Nebraska on a map of the US) SF-SNEdited by: Stjepan Veliki at: 9/16/05 9:26

Those places aren't big historical places though are they? I could ask you to point out Thurso on a map and i doubt you could...
