Good going, Erik, you just confessed you were using IE :). AOL's server apparently sends a bogus MIME type descriptor for that file - it says it's application/octet-stream (general or executable binary data) instead of audio/mpeg3, and Explorer is the only browser that I know that will trust the file descriptor instead of the MIME type descriptor (this is, by the way, non-standard behaviour).So yes, it works, partly. It would definitely work better if it was on a better server, though. For those who use Explorer it will work right out of the link - others will probably know enough to be able to play the B0O0/\/\cast manually.As for the encoding... I'd recommend Ogg Vorbis ( http://www.vorbis.com ). It's slightly more effective than .mp3, but also slightly heavier to encode and decode. Oh, and it's not encumbered by patents or big companies behind it, so you can actually create Ogg Vorbis streams legally for free over there. Tolkien's themes of loss always seemed a little weird to me - everyone was always lamenting for the mighty heroes of old, and marvelling at the power of lost crafts and magics. I mean, did the Elves make Glamdring and Sting and Orcrist and then FORGET what they just did? If things worked like our world, the very next year some smart-assed Elf would hammer out Super-Glamdring, then Hyper-Glamdring, then Ultra-Glamdring, and continue to improve until Frodo's day when the Elves would be producing toothpicks that would cause every Orc in the land to explode if waved even slightly.-- shut_up_man, on Slashdot

The reason for MP3 is that it's more supported than Ogg Vorbis though...that's why I chose it....WAV..too big...RA...real audio can be annoying and the quality is horrible...Windows MEdia..is microsoft shit and I don't want to further it's existence (although I personally prefer it to RA because it streams better)... Yeah, I have seen a few .avi files in MS-MPEG-4 v3 format and assumed that means Microsoft. Ah well. mplayer handled them without trouble, so I'm not really concerned. If I ever do my own video rips, however, they'll probably be in XviD (or whatever libavcodec will want to encode to).
