David: Not really. Mostly it just shows the consequences of a nonphonetic orthography paired with the evils of asshole teenagers. My alternative English alphabet and orthography are superior anyway. My álturnetiv inglish alfebet and órþogrefí ár súpíríer eníwej! You know, the sad part is, I can understand that without really pausing. An interesting thing to note among teenagers, me being a 15 year old myself: Most of you have at least heard of the character-number language known as 1337? Well, you'd expect most people who know leet, even if they didn't use it all the time, to have bad grammer and spelling, corrrect? Me and two of my friends on AIM write "correctly", perhaps the only discrepancy being that we don't always write in complete sentences, but we do most of the time. My other friends all write in broken AIM-speak. --- The first step is admitting I have a problem.

with the grammer and vocabulary added to english by L337, I would say it is a dialect, rather then just stupid writing. If you feel an icy chill...the Conglacio is amongst you

It mostly just borrows slang vocabulary and grammar from other places. 1337 is more like a script style maybe. SF-SN

Not exactly. Leet was formed as a way to get around filters, and is primarily used in terms of sarcasm or tongue-in-cheek. It is very rare to actually see people use it in serious talk. Internet shorthand is quite different, comes "naturally" to the people that use it. Lack of intelligence? Why no! It takes an advanced brain to screw up English to the point that girl did. Same with the people who use l337.One thing you should keep in mind, about using phonetic spelling for English, is that Standard American is neither the only or only correct phonology of English. Why, even here in Alabama there are pockets of accents that are incredibly different. My grandfather is from the Deep South and never pronounces the letter 'r' unless it precedes a vowel. Quote:My grandfather is from the Deep South and never pronounces the letter 'r' unless it precedes a vowel.yes, I know what a non-rhotic accent is.Trust me, I've long since taken into account dialectal differences. You can write any regional accent according to this phonetic system. I just opt for, in my spelling, a form of Recieved Pronunciation retaining the presence of all consonants. Didn't someone come up with a phonetic alphabet that could be used for just about any language once?
