Emissaryship auctions
From now on, Landsraad emissaryship in Straylight will be auctioned in two-week chunks to the highest bidder.
The rules are:
The people eligible for the auction are chosen by the Duke of Straylight. Currently all residents of Straylight are eligible. The duke acts as the auctioneer. You may bid in public or by proxy (private bid sent to the auctioneer). The highest bid wins the auction. There is no reserve price. Any new bid must be higher than any current public bid. The winner pays the auctioneer the amount of the second highest bid. Auctions close sometime on the Sunday, exact time being determined by the auctioneer, before emissaryship is transferred.
I make no official promise not to interfere with the Landsraad emissaries. I still remain the duke after all. However, interfering isn't really my thing. I believe Corey can attest to that .
(also, note that I don't expect to actually raise much activity or money with this. You guys are free to collude with each other to arrange a round-robin cycle where everyone gets to try out emissaryship and nobody pays, or whatever you like. All I'm trying to do here is give you an opportunity to play with )
The auction is now open for the 17.11 - 30.11 period! Straylightians, get your bids in!

Re: Emissaryship auctions
I'm no expert at auctions, but winner pays the amount of the second highest bid, combined with public bidding process, sounds fishy to me.
Let's say Alice figures no one's very active, and makes a lowball public bid of 5E.
Bob sees it and immediately publically bids 999999999E.
No one can bid anything else, because all bids must be higher than the highest existing public bid.
Therefore, Bob wins the auction and pays the lowball bid of 5E.

Ack, you're quite correct. I spent so much time thinking about auctions in the Landsraad that I ended up confusing myself when I got to this one ):.
OK, well, let's make the second-price thing only apply to proxy bids. That does mean that there's basically no reason to use public bids, but hey, I don't have a problem with that. Corey, if you want to, I can invalidate that bid of yours.

Icebreaker: I reserve the right to invalidate bids that I don't believe the bidder is capable of paying
Corey: Congratulations, the emissaryship is now yours until the end of the month.
